"Blessed
are you, O
Lord, the God
of Israel our
father,
forever and
ever. Yours, O
Lord, is the
greatness and
the power and
the glory and
the victory
and the
majesty, for
all that is in
the heavens
and in the
earth is
Yours. Yours
is the
kingdom, O
Lord, and You
are exalted as
head above
all.
Both riches
and honor come
from You, and
You rule over
all. In Your
hand are power
and might, and
in Your hand
it is to make
great and to
give strength
to all. And
now we thank
You, our God,
and praise
Your glorious
name" (1
Chronicles
29:10-13).
"But thanks be
to God, who
gives us the
victory
through our
Lord Jesus
Christ" (1
Corinthians
15:57).
Yesterday
we called our
longtime
friend and
Arkansawyer
Tommy
Carpenter, who
is enduring a
very difficult
recovery
following a
heart bypass
surgery. He
was unable to
talk but we
got an update
from his wife
Jane and were
able to pray
with her. It's
a very
difficult time
for them but
they have a
great faith in
God and an
abundance of
supportive
family and
friends.
I
met Tommy
about 20 years
ago in
Springfield,
MO when he was
also visiting
Al
Worthley,
who
was my
chaplain
supervisor at
the time.
Tommy and I
quickly became
friends and
later he
visited us in
PA and got to
know Brooksyne
and Ester. In
fact Ester
calls him
Grandpa
because of his
warmth and
loving
interest in
her like that
of a
grandparent.
Tommy
is a veteran
minister of
the Gospel and
missionary (to
Belize). We
have been
blessed to
have him as a
guest in our
home and many
years ago he
preached in
the little
country church
in
Mastersonville,
PA where I
served several
years as an
interim
pastor. During
his sermon he
told the
congregation
about his
personal
connection
with an old
gospel song
many of us
enjoy singing.
He refers to
this hymn
background as
"The rest of
the story":
Before
recordings
were made,
back in the
early 1900’s
Singing
Schools were
fairly common
in the U.S.,
having had
their origin
in American
history as
early as the
1700’s. New
systems of
music
notation,
including
shape notes,
were developed
by singing
school
teachers as an
aid in
learning to
sing by sight
without
musical
instrumentation.
In fact
Singing
Schools still
exist though
they are few
of them and
mostly among
the plain
folks.
Tommy’s Uncle, Carl, was hosting Eugene M. Bartlett, a popular songwriter and leader of a singing school in his home in rural Arkansas in 1939. One morning Bartlett showed Carl the music and lyrics for a brand new song he had just written. It began, "I heard an old, old story, how a Savior came from glory…" Stop reading! Do you recognize that song? Bartlett
then went on
to share with
his Uncle Carl
the entire
song that many
of us know as
“Victory In
Jesus”. Of
course the
song has
become one of
the most
beloved hymns
of the church
and is found
in most
hymnals,
regardless of
denomination.
It's sung all
over the world
and I don't
think we've
ever been a
part of any
church that
doesn't sing
"Victory in
Jesus"! The
last time we
sang it in the
large church
we now attend
all the
people, both
young and old,
sang out like
old-time
congregational
singing. It
just lends
itself to
being sung
heartily.
Eugene Bartlett died in 1941, at just 55 years of age, only two years after he wrote his best-known song. But his wife, Joan Bartlett, lived many more years, in fact renewing the copyright in 1967. When her time of death came the family and preacher gathered around her bedside. They looked on rather helplessly as she was in the final throes of death, her body ravaged and completely unresponsive. Expecting to see her draw her final breath they were stunned by her sudden arousal as she broke into song:
I heard an
old, old
story, how a
Savior came
from glory,
How He gave His life on Calvary to save a wretch like me; I heard about His groaning, of His precious blood’s atoning, Then I repented of my sins and won the victory. O victory in Jesus… At first her voice was very weak, but as she continued to sing the words became clearer and her voice grew stronger. She then sang the second verse:
I heard about
His healing,
of His
cleansing
pow’r
revealing.
How He made the lame to walk again and caused the blind to see; And then I cried, “Dear Jesus, Come and heal my broken spirit,” And somehow Jesus came and brought to me the victory. O victory in Jesus… Immediately after singing this verse and the chorus she died! The preacher, at a loss for words said, “I reckon she’s singing the third verse up yonder.” What a way to go! And what a memorable demonstration of having the victory even unto death. Our
first daily
text is an
exclamation of
praise
by David. What
an expression
of victory! He
joyfully
exclaims, "Yours,
O Lord, is the
greatness and
the power and
the glory and
the victory
and the
majesty".
The
second text is
from Paul's
grand
discourse on
the
resurrection
in 1
Corinthians
15:57, "But
thanks be to
God, who gives
us the victory
through our
Lord Jesus
Christ".
God continues
to give His
people the
victory in
Jesus.
Here's the
third verse of
"Victory in
Jesus" that
Mrs. Bartlett
must have sang
in heaven:
I
heard about a
mansion He has
built for me
in glory,
And I heard about the streets of gold beyond the crystal sea; About the angels singing and the old redemption story, And some sweet day I’ll sing up there the song of victory. Stephen

Daily prayer:
Father, we
choose to
trust You in
all
circumstances,
whether
challenging or
celebratory.
At times, in
Your
providence, we
endure what
Peter called
"grieved by
various
trials" Thank
you that we
can indeed
have victory
in Jesus on
this side of
glory and
unending
victory on the
other side.
We'll sing the
song of
victory with
the saints
from all
generations
along with the
angels of
heaven. What a
day, glorious
day that will
be because of
Jesus our Lord
and Saviour.
Amen.

"Victory In Jesus" Watch on YouTube Old-fashioned singing! In fact it sounds like a country church in Arkansas! "Every Victory" Watch on YouTube The Belonging Company In
considering
today's topic
on victory
this recently
written song
came to mind.
It sounds new
in 2023
(although it's
actually a
couple of
years old).
When we hear
"Victory in
Jesus" it
sounds so
old-fashioned.
In fact it
always has for
me since I
first heard
it, likely in
the early
70's. But it
wasn't
old-fashioned
to people just
over 80 years
ago in 1940!
It would have
sounded to
them just as
new as the
latest music
like "Every
Victory" does
to us now. But
we wonder how
many of the
songs we sing
today will
still be sung
80 years from
now. One thing
is for sure -
to that
generation
they will
sound
"old-fashioned"!
Tommy, who we
shared about
in the opening
of our message
is a veteran
preacher with
lots of
interesting
experiences.
He served as a
missionary to
British
Honduras (now
Belize) in the
late sixties
but a health
problem
prohibited him
from
continuing to
serve on the
mission field.
He returned to
the states and
pastored for
many years and
then in 1994
became the
Secretary/Treasurer
of the
Arkansas
District.
The
next year he
was asked to
join a mission
team for a
short-term
trip back to
Belize. He had
a couple of
weeks of
fruitful
ministry. As
he was
departing to
return to the
States he went
through
security at
the Belize
airport and
the security
agent looked
at his name,
then looked up
at him and
asked, "Are
you Tommy
Carpenter?"
Tommy
responded,
"Well, yes I
am." The man
told him that
many years
earlier Tommy
had
come to his
village
(it would have
been at least
25 years) and
preached the
Gospel and
this man had
gotten saved
at that time.
Don't you
imagine how
immensely
encouraging
that was for
Tommy!
Another memory of "Victory in Jesus": In Bible College we had a friend named Larry Spicher whose nickname was Vic. He told us how he got his nickname. He worked for a company as an accountant when he got saved and was known for singing or whistling, (I can't recall) "Victory in Jesus" all the time around his coworkers earning him the nickname Vic! It's kind of hard to imagine singing or whistling aloud around other employees today isn't it? To
