Message
summary:
Let us
together with
one heart and
one voice
declare, “This
God is our God
forever and
ever! He will
be our guide
even unto
death.” And
then let us
declare, "But
thanks be to
God, who gives
us the victory
through our
Lord Jesus
Christ" (1
Corinthians
15:57).
"For
this God is
our God
forever and
ever: He will
be our guide
even unto
death" (Psalm
48:14).
A
stirring newer
song perfect
for beginning
a worship
service
proclaims:
This
is our God
This is who He is, He loves us This is our God This is what He does, He saves us He bore the cross, beat the grave Let Heaven and Earth proclaim This is our God, King Jesus ![]() This
Psalm is not
written by
David but
rather a group
of singers
known as the
"Sons of
Korah".
Interestingly,
but really not
surprising, is
that there is
a modern
Christian
singing group
with that
name! Most
likely these
sons of Korah
were temple
singers who
lived during
the period of
the divided
kingdom but
they have a
long history
going back to
Moses.*
This
Psalm extols
God for His
greatness, His
deliverance,
His unfailing
love and other
divine
attributes. It
includes a
virtual Google
Earth-like
tour around
the wall of
the Holy City.
“Walk about
Zion, go
around her,
count her
towers,
consider well
her ramparts,
view her
citadels, that
you may tell
of them to the
next
generation”
(12,13).
![]()
It begins, “For
this God is
our God
forever and
ever.”
Each
word is so
meaningful but
let's focus on
just the
pronoun "our".
It teaches us
that we serve
God both
individually
and in a
community of
fellow
believers. This
is our
great eternal
God!
This God is
our "Maker,
Defender,
Redeemer and
Friend".
Consider His
great acts
throughout
history.
Consider the
God of
Abraham,
Isaac, and
Jacob, of
Moses, Joshua,
Samuel and
David; the God
of Ruth,
Esther, Mary,
Isaiah,
Jeremiah and
Daniel; the
God of Peter,
Stephen and
Paul. The God
of Martin
Luther, John
Wesley, D.L.
Moody, Jim
Elliot, Billy
Graham, and
many other
well-known
believers who
stood the
tests and
finished well.
He
is the God of
scores of
people not
recorded in
history books,
little known
on this side
who have stood
firm and
faithful to
God throughout
the long
history of the
church right
up to those
living for Him
today. We want
that to be
each one of
us.
Throughout our lives we have been enriched with the fellowship of many who proclaim, "This God is our God forever and ever". Our associations of greatest blessing have not been with famous people but rather with faithful people. In fact unless you've been in our circles most of you have never heard of them. There are many and a consequence of aging is that the list grows; saints above and saints below. In your own life consider those who proclaimed "this God is our God forever and ever" who have walked faithfully with God and impacted your own life. Some are now with Christ; others still labor here below. Then
consider your
impact on
others who
witness your
proclamation.
The verse and Psalm ends with, "He will be our guide even unto death". What a great source of encouragement He provides through His Spirit's guidance and His abiding presence through all of life up to the time of our inevitable death. As
we were
praying
together this
morning it was
helpful to
just change
the pronouns
to make it
personal. "For
You are our
God forever
and ever: You
will be our
guide even
unto death"
and then
personal, "For
You are my God
forever and
ever: You will
be my guide
even unto
death".
Let
us together
with one heart
and one voice
declare, “This
God is our God
forever and
ever! He will
be our guide
even unto
death.”
And then let
us proclaim, "But
thanks be to
God, who gives
us the victory
through our
Lord Jesus
Christ" (1
Corinthians
15:57).
Be
encouraged
today,
(Hebrews
3:13)

Year-end
Financial
Appeal
We want to thank all who have financially supported our ministry this past year (and some for many years!). Like most ministries, we typically see a spike in giving at the end of the year for which we are most thankful. Thus we bump up this appeal on each post through the remainder of the year. We
realize there
are many fine
ministries and
causes
requesting
support at
this time but
if you would
