Lebanon County Barn
A tidy white barn on Colebrook Road approaching Lebanon, PA

"This Is Our God!"

Message summary: Let us together with one heart and one voice declare, “This God is our God forever and ever! He will be our guide even unto death.” And then let us declare, "But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 15:57).

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"For this God is our God forever and ever: He will be our guide even unto death" (Psalm 48:14).

A stirring newer song perfect for beginning a worship service proclaims:

This is our God
This is who He is, He loves us
This is our God
This is what He does, He saves us
He bore the cross, beat the grave
Let Heaven and Earth proclaim
This is our God, King Jesus

Psalm 48Early in our Christian walk we sang a chorus that was also a stirring service opener based on Psalm 48. Anyone else remember it?  It begins with the worshipful declaration, "Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised…" We found a link to it (see below).

This Psalm is not written by David but rather a group of singers known as the "Sons of Korah". Interestingly, but really not surprising, is that there is a modern Christian singing group with that name! Most likely these sons of Korah were temple singers who lived during the period of the divided kingdom but they have a long history going back to Moses.*

This Psalm extols God for His greatness, His deliverance, His unfailing love and other divine attributes. It includes a virtual Google Earth-like tour around the wall of the Holy City. “Walk about Zion, go around her, count her towers, consider well her ramparts, view her citadels, that you may tell of them to the next generation” (12,13).

Psalm 48:14But the Psalm ends with our daily text which empowers us as we transmit the life-changing message of God’s truths to our own generation. Let us examine it today, consider its relevance, and receive its assurance:

It begins, “For this God is our God forever and ever.”

Each word is so meaningful but let's focus on just the pronoun "our". It teaches us that we serve God both individually and in a community of fellow believers. This is our great eternal God!

This God is our "Maker, Defender, Redeemer and Friend". Consider His great acts throughout history. Consider the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, of Moses, Joshua, Samuel and David; the God of Ruth, Esther, Mary, Isaiah, Jeremiah and Daniel; the God of Peter, Stephen and Paul. The God of Martin Luther, John Wesley, D.L. Moody, Jim Elliot, Billy Graham, and many other well-known believers who stood the tests and finished well.

He is the God of scores of people not recorded in history books, little known on this side who have stood firm and faithful to God throughout the long history of the church right up to those living for Him today. We want that to be each one of us.

Throughout our lives we have been enriched with the fellowship of many who proclaim, "This God is our God forever and ever". Our associations of greatest blessing have not been with famous people but rather with faithful people. In fact unless you've been in our circles most of you have never heard of them. There are many and a consequence of aging is that the list grows; saints above and saints below.

In your own life consider those who proclaimed
"this God is our God forever and ever" who have walked faithfully with God and impacted your own life. Some are now with Christ; others still labor here below.

Then consider your impact on others who witness your proclamation.

The verse and Psalm ends with, "He will be our guide even unto death". What a great source of encouragement He provides through His Spirit's guidance and His abiding presence through all of life up to the time of our inevitable death.

As we were praying together this morning it was helpful to just change the pronouns to make it personal. "For You are our God forever and ever: You will be our guide even unto death" and then personal, "For You are my God forever and ever: You will be my guide even unto death".

Let us together with one heart and one voice declare, “This God is our God forever and ever! He will be our guide even unto death.” And then let us proclaim, "But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 15:57).

Be encouraged today, (Hebrews 3:13)

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, when we consider the saints throughout history and the marvelous saving power portrayed in their lives we’re encouraged by their bold example and their consistent enduring walk with You. We recognize these “greats” of the past and those in our own generation who are faithful and powerful examples. They do not build their own kingdom or seek credit for their accomplishments. Instead they recognize that it is God alone who deserves our truest praise, no matter our own personal sacrifice. We gratefully say to ourselves and proclaim to others, “This God is our God!  He will be forever and ever! He will be our guide even unto death.” Thank you that we not only have victory now but will have it in full at the time of our death through Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Today's Suggested Music and Supplemental Resources

"This is Our God"   Watch on YouTube  Phil Wickham  A joy-filled song to begin a worship service. It seems like we have opened our service with this song in our present church.

"Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised" from Psalm 48:1  Watch on YouTube  This is the chorus based on Scripture and is really how it sounded in the seventies when we sang it!  Singing Scripture is a great way to learn Scripture.

"Psalm 1"  Watch on YouTube  Sons of Korah  The modern group (from Australia) named after the... "Sons of Korah"

"God and God Alone"   Watch on YouTube  Steve Green

Back of addition after framing
Today we will share a few photo updates of our home project taken this morning from our back yard. The framers finished their work yesterday and we have a three man plumbing crew today doing the rough-in plumbing. Due to a grade difference the inside of the room is a little lower than it appears.

Inside of addition after framing
This is the inside looking through a side window next to the barn. Our bedroom will be in the foreground, with a bathroom and closet in the background. A door will be placed where the window is currently on the right from our present office. This opening had actually been a door from the garage before we converted it into small bedroom for my Mom in 2002. We are retaining the brick wall for "character".

Getting along
The maltipoos have been with us for a year now and rare is there a time that Gracie doesn't immediately run off when the dogs come near. This was an exception. It didn't last too long but she did let them get close so progress was made.
