2 Timothy 2:2

"The Ability To Teach Others"

Message summary: Keep passing God’s truth on today, my brothers and sisters, in whatever capacity God has called you.

Listen to our message on your audio player.

“Then Moses said to the Israelites, “See, the Lord has chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and He has filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood and to engage in all kinds of artistic crafts. And He has given both him and Oholiab son of Ahisamak, of the tribe of Dan, the ability to teach others. He has filled them with skill to do all kinds of work as engravers, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen, and weavers—all of them skilled workers and designers” (Exodus 35:30-35).  “And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others” (2 Timothy 2:2).

Mr. Simmons was my wood shop teacher at Truman High School in Independence, Missouri in the early 70's. I enjoyed wood shop and still have a bookcase that I made in his class, though Brooksyne has filled it with her favorite books. (I didn't realize at the time that I was actually making a bookshelf for Brooksyne who would become my wife about six years later.)

I can still see Mr. Simmons moving from machine to machine and teaching the students how to properly use them and especially his emphasis on safety. He was a skilled craftsman but he also had an ability to teach others which is essential for a good teacher. I also remember Mr. Simmons because he was a Christian and allowed a group of students from our Campus Crusade for Christ group to use his classroom to gather in before school started.

All through my life I've been blessed by those who are knowledgeable and have a wide variety of skills along with the ability to teach others.  In my view the noun “teacher” does not necessarily convey the ability to teach. I have had many who have had no official credentials as a teachers who have taught me very well and frankly I have had several teachers who were credentialed (usually meaning a specified amount of formal training) who were very unhelpful!

Today’s verse is set during the construction of the tabernacle under Moses. God had gifted many skilled workers who participated in this project. However today's Scripture selection describes a special gift held by two of them.  An explanation of pronouns is needed here due to the limited context I have used. "He" refers to the One who ultimately gives this ability.  The reference to “him” is a fellow by the name of Bezalel, who was the principal designer and general contractor in the project.  These men were imparted with a wonderful and much needed gift: “the ability to teach others".

The specific skills they had to teach were technical and likely they managed as well, but what a fine job they did.  At the conclusion of the project we find this word of acclamation: “The Israelites had done all the work just as the LORD had commanded Moses.  Moses inspected the work and saw that they had done it just as the LORD had commanded. So Moses blessed them” (Exodus 39:42,43). Especially note the phrase “just as” indicating full obedience. Consider the role that the obedience of Bezalel and Oholiab had in this outcome. Their teaching was a vital link in the chain of the project’s success.

For many of you I ask that you consider your calling to teach. I know that a good number who receive our messages teach students in homeschooling, Christian and public schools, but I'm particularly challenging those who teach God’s Word in some capacity.  For many it is the students in your Sunday School class.

Paul urged Timothy: “And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others” (2 Timothy 2:2).  You and I are referred to in this verse.  We are many generations removed from the original statement, but we are indebted to the countless spiritual Bezalels and Oholiabs who have faithfully taught us and those before us, using the ability and heart to teach given by God.  Keep passing God’s truth on today, my brothers and sisters, in whatever capacity God has called you. One day we will also hear a word of acclamation from our Lord Himself.

Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13.

Praying manDaily prayer:  Father, help us to be teachable even as we teach others; whether it is Your holy truths, life’s skills, or in a vocational setting.  Grant patience, clarity, and purpose in the way we conduct ourselves and in the way we are perceived by those we instruct. In the name of Jesus we pray, amen.

I continue to be blessed by solid teaching from a variety of sources including friends in the Lord. A brother shared this nugget of wisdom and insight referring to himself and his wife in the following note:

“We find ourselves in, what is to us, an unusual position of being the elder representatives of our faith. Increasingly we are trying to teach young people (and by young I mean married couples in their 30’s) the power and enduring value of trust in and submission to the Lord. This lesson is so central to the Christian walk but it flies in the face of the values of the world. The enemy has done a perilously effective job of convincing people to rely on and trust in anything but the Lord (themselves, money, power, education, influence – the list just goes on). The lesson is so simple and yet people are so tragically blind to it. As I see young people so concerned about the things that they need I try to help them understand that “Your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”  The whole key is the “seek first” part. For many years I struggled to put my life in order so that I might better serve the Lord – yet the Lord finally taught me to first serve Him and trust that He will take care of the rest.”

Bike mailbox
Yesterday I took a bike ride along the Lebanon Valley Rail Trail and then drove around Mount Gretna, an interesting and very colorful little village that feels like it's in mountainous northern PA. Here is a mailbox mounted to a bike! I suppose the railroad tie adds stability to the bicycle/mailbox structure.

Rosie on bike overlooking lake
The Connewago Lake is a popular swimming spot in Mount Gretna.

This Amish family converted their entire front-yard to a garden on Harvest Road.
