Lebanon County barns
An attractive red barn complex in Lebanon County.

"Barns and Hard Work"

Message summary: Today we consider a lesson we can learn from barns and hard work.

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"The Lord will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to" (Deuteronomy 28:8).

Every direction we take in leaving our rural home we pass barns. I especially noted them this morning when I was out to transport Amish teachers, who live on farms with barns.

Weber barn

We have a small two story utility barn where I have my workshop and lots of storage. It was made by a previous owner of our property out of salvaged siding and rough-hewn framing from another old barn so it has some interesting characteristics. This is probably the only barn I will ever have on this side of eternity.

A barn is a large farm building used for storing grain, hay, straw, farm equipment or for housing livestock. Barns vary in size, design, color and even their intended usage.

As a little boy I would play in my Uncle Gentry's barn on his farm outside of Harwood, Missouri. When the cousins came together for family gatherings we'd play for hours in that barn and especially the hay loft. Uncle Gentry would hitch a wagon to his Allis-Chalmers tractor and take us for a ride in the fields. When we heard the ringing of the dinner bell we'd all run back to the old white 1880's farmhouse for Aunt Dora's country fried chicken, sizzling in a cast iron frying pan.

Barns are mentioned throughout the Bible with today's verse being the very first reference to "barn" in the Scripture. This was prior to the crossing of the Jordan River into the Promised Land and thus is a prophetic promise since, at the time, they were concluding their wilderness wanderings and certainly did not have barns.

"The Lord will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to." It was a wonderful promise to them and in principle a promise to all of us whether or not we have a barn.

"The Lord will send." It's so vital to recognize where our blessings come from and to readily acknowledge that is heard when we sing the Doxology, "Praise God from whom all blessings flow". God continues to send forth His physical and spiritual blessings to the fallen human race. Sadly, many reject the reality of this source or exhibit an entitlement attitude. God owes us nothing and yet provides for all that which we need.

"A blessing on your barns." This phrase indicates the agricultural way of life so prevalent in the Bible period. But in principle it surely also means our work or business, whatever that may be, that relates to the way we make a living today.

"On everything you put your hand to." Regardless of whether it's office work or manual labor we use our hands. Note carefully how that this Scripture expresses a cooperative relationship. God is faithful to bless. But farmers don't just lay around all day waiting for God's blessings to fall down from the skies. They work hard, using the skills God has taught them over the years, often through the trials and errors of farming. Although most of us don't work on farms the principle is surely the same in life.

Many tend to see work as a mere necessity to be avoided as much as possible. But God has called us all to use our hands for His glory, for our own betterment and to bless others. Consider these verses:

* "He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need" (Ephesians 4:28).
* "Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you" (I Thessalonians 4:11).
* "We work hard with our own hands" (1 Corinthians 4:12).

Let us claim today's promise and faithfully obey God's commands. We must ever be mindful of His blessings and regularly give Him thanks.

Be encouraged today!  Hebrews 3:13

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, thank you for Your blessing on our "barns". We are confident that You will provide for all our needs as we obey Your commands. You have instituted work from the very beginning so that we can provide for ourselves and others within our care all that we have need of. Your blessings fall upon those who obey You, those who are not idle or wasteful. Thank you for our work. We lift up our brothers and sisters who are impacted by layoffs or situations beyond their control who earnestly want to work and still await doors to open. You are our faithful Provider and we are deeply grateful. Amen.

"Goodness Of God"  Watch on YouTube   Autumn Nelon Streetman, Joseph Habedank, and Riley Clark  (Live At The Barn at Sycamore Farms)

Brooksyne's Note: Some of our Southern Gospel followers will recognize the name Autumn Nelon Streetman who sang with her parents and sister in a gospel singing group "The Nelons". Autumn is the sole surviving member of "The Nelons", who died in a plane crash in Wyoming along with their pilot on July 24, 2024. Autumn and her husband welcomed their first child, a baby boy named Rhett James, on December 1st, nearly five months later. This date is significant because it is also the birthday of her late mother, Kelly Nelon Clark. Rhett was born a week before his due date, bringing a bittersweet joy to Autumn amidst her grief which she shared in an interview I heard on "Gospel Greats" recently.  If you listen to her singing "Goodness of God" try listening to the words of this song in the context of what she has endured over the past year and a half.

Lancaster County barn
The first young teacher I picked up this morning lives on this farm along with her parents and many siblings. Amos, her dad, is illustrative of hard, resourceful work. Early in his marriage he had a diving accident in Chesapeake Bay and was left paralyzed (similar to Joni). He was no longer able to operate the farm but started a farm store business to provide for his family and has done very well. He uses a wheelchair but still has use of his hands.

Weber barn framing
For the terminally curious here is an example of how a previous owner framed our barn using salvaged wood from an old barn that was demolished. A further example of his resourcefulness was using roofing tar paper as weatherproof sheathing prior to nailing on the old barn's siding. It has worked well but has torn in several places since it was erected in 1995. Another down side to the framing for me was that I was unable to neatly put on interior walls on the lower level since the dimensions were all different. I just used pegboard and it's easy see all the places where it bows in and out!
