"Living In A Hard Season"

Message summary: May God give you a steady resolve to live in His peace and seek to fulfill His purpose.

Listen to our message on your audio player.

“Is not the Lord your God with you? And has He not given you peace on every side?" (1 Chronicles 22:18). "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid" (John 14:27).  "But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God" (Acts 20:24).

We have a 30 minute break between services at our church. This last Sunday Brooksyne was in the choir so I was alone at first. I generally like to find my seat early in this period and then mosey about greeting people. I greeted Tim, a friend I met about 25 years ago when I spoke at a sermon series at his church. We've been in a few mutual activities since then but we've not exchanged a lot of conversation over the years.

When I greeted him I asked how he was doing expecting the typical "fine, thank you" or as some say, "better than I deserve".

But Tim soberly responded, "Not good". Inquiring as to why he proceeded to tell me that he had cancer and it was spreading. We talked for a few minutes and I sought to encourage him before returning to my seat.

He shared two goals he made for himself during this most difficult season in his life:

1) Choosing to live in peace.

2) Continuing to fervently fulfill God's calling on his life.

I was touched by his thoughtful resolve so well articulated. It's good to have a spiritual plan during times like this, times when life, in the providence of God, comes at you hard. I called him yesterday and he elaborated on these goals along with Scripture verses that had sustained him. He was first diagnosed a year ago so I imagine he's been through a lot already.

We are sure there are those reading this message who are in a hard season much like Tim. In fact several come to mind that we know personally. May God give you a steady resolve to live in His peace and to fulfill His purpose during the hard times, when sorrows like sea billows roll, as well as times of ease, when peace like a river attendeth our way.

Be encouraged today!  Hebrews 3:13

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, we know that peace comes, not due to the absence of conflict, but in the midst of it when our dependency and trust are solidly anchored in You, our Father of Miracles and God of all Comfort. Your purpose in our lives is most visible in our proper response to heartache, betrayal, disappointment, suffering, or loss. We keep Your purpose for our lives before us as we call to mind that much good spiritual fruit can be developed in the ups and downs we encounter today.  May we be faithful in making choices that reflect Your purpose for us. We pray for these things in the name that is above all names, Jesus. Amen.

Brooksyne's Note: Yesterday I spent the day with two dear women who are we are not blood kin but are spiritual kinfolks - we call ourselves a three generation trio who likes to spend time together when possible. Anna Ruth being the youngest is like a daughter to me; I am in the middle and am like a daughter to Dottie who is the oldest among us.

Amish classroom

We visited a one-room Amish school where Sadie (Anna Ruth's oldest daughter) is the teacher and her younger sister Naomi is helper to 27 students. As I've experienced in other Amish school houses the children are very respectful, hard-working.  Learning takes place simultaneously at every age level (grades 1-8). We were warmly welcomed and later the children got to hear about what it was like when Dottie, age 91, attended school. The Amish (both young and old) thoroughly enjoy hearing stories from our younger years.

The three of us sat in the back of the classroom and observed, even worked with the younger children who brought us phonics flash cards to quiz them. They sang songs for us including "Sweet Hour of Prayer" in German. Most all of the children came one by one to shake our hands and I was able to greet each child at their desk as I distributed homemade cupcakes for them to enjoy during their recess time. (Photo of Dottie Schmidt who has become like a mother to me. At age 91 she is one year younger than my mother who went to be with the Lord at the age of 67.)
