Faith in
a Modern
World" Message summary: By God's grace let us hold fast to the truths of the Bible today, even if we are called "old-fashioned", "unenlightened" or "out of step with the times"!
Listen
to our message
on your audio
player. "Beloved,
while I was
making every
effort to
write you
about our
common
salvation, I
felt the
necessity to
write to you
appealing that
you contend
earnestly for
the faith
which was once
for all handed
down to the
saints" (Jude
1:3). One
Sunday in the
1990's when I
served a
church in New
England we had
a special day
we called
"Old-Fashioned
Day". Many of
our people
dressed in an
old-fashioned
manner, our
choir sang a
musical titled
"Sweet
Memories", I
preached a
message titled
"I'm
unapologetically
old-fashioned!",
and we enjoyed
eating "dinner
on the
grounds" as
potlucks used
to be referred
to. The
church was at
that time over
70 years old
and Hope, a
dear lady in
her 80's,
still attended
the church
since its
founding. In
fact one of
her ancestors
came over in
the Mayflower
back in 1620.
It was only
natural that
Brooksyne
would select
her to narrate
the
musical.
The
"Old-Fashioned
Revival Hour"
was a radio
program out of
Pasadena,
California
that aired
from
1937-1968. Of
course now
when we hear
that type of
music we
consider it
really
"old-fashioned".
However that
was the name
of the program
when it was
contemporary
and many of
the songs were
relatively new
at that time. 1)
Let us be
unashamedly
and
unapologetically
old-fashioned
when it comes
to holding
firmly to the
teachings of
the Bible, the
apostle's
doctrine.
That's
described in
our text as "the
faith which
was once for
all handed
down to the
saints".
Many now mock
the teachings
of Scripture
that have been
held dear by
earnest
believers for
nearly 2,000
years; the
Genesis
creation
account,
Biblical
miracles, the
virgin birth,
the atoning
death and
bodily
resurrection
of Jesus
Christ. These
truths are
scorned by
modernists as
being
hopelessly
old-fashioned
in our
enlightened
age.
2) Let us be unashamedly and unapologetically old-fashioned concerning the ever changing beliefs regarding sexual morality and gender! Currently, those who hold to the Biblical teaching concerning marriage being exclusively between one man and one woman and "male and female he created them" from creation are increasingly viewed by dominant culture as old-fashioned and unenlightened.* Call
me
"old-fashioned",
that's OK with
me. I take
seriously the
call of Jude
in the daily
text to "contend
earnestly for
the faith
which was once
for all handed
down to the
saints".
The word
translated
"contend"
means to
"struggle
for". We thank
God for
ministers and
lay people
alike who are
unswerving in
their
commitment to
uphold these
truths and
increasingly
that can be a
struggle. Be encouraged today! Hebrews 3:13 Stephen
&
Brooksyne

* In recent years views on morality that is seen by the world as "old-fashioned" is now also deemed as hateful and dangerous! In our area we have groups of people known as "Plain", a term denoting their lifestyle and attire. They have various practices but in one group the women and older teens wear cape dresses and head coverings. Some do not own cars, others only a specific color of car, often black. Some use electric from the grid, others do not. They engage with technology to various degrees. We have many friends who are in these groups. Many would view these folks as "old-fashioned" but we have met many who have an earnest faith and hold to Biblical orthodoxy concerning sound doctrine. On WDAC, our local Christian radio station, one of the programs is Heralds of Hope which has solid expository preaching. The extent of the mission work in this organization is outstanding.
