Kraybill Church Road traffic
Brooksyne was in the process of sending an email via her iPhone when the pets started barking furiously. She knew that could only mean one thing: a horse and carriage was driving past our house, so she quickly switched her phone from email to camera, darted into the living room and captured this photo through our bay window. It turned out to be a horse-drawn wagon. The trees are shedding their leaves and losing their autumn colors but we look out upon the field across our road and it is a now a bright green thanks to the rye cover crop.

"Destroying Speculations"

Message summary: As we take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ, God is able to help us sort fact from deception. The illusions that keep us bound will be loosed to set us free so that we can be the people Christ has called us to be.

“And it will be said: ‘Build up, build up, prepare the road! Remove the obstacles out of the way of my people’” (Isaiah 57:14). “We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5).

Brooksyne and I took a long walk on the farm trail across the road from our house (the mile long trail is to the left of the field in lead photo). Some cattle were grazing and we wondered if the farmer knew that his cows were loose. The further we walked in their direction we spotted a single fence line we assumed to be electric, but we weren’t sure.

Now I don’t care for the “buzz” you get when you touch an electric fence. However, upon close examination it appeared to be just a thin strand of twine. I teasingly tried to coax Brooksyne into touching it to make sure, but her many years of living on the farm taught her to be very wary of such a challenge!

Finally I bravely checked it out and that’s all it was. No electric, no buzz. The cattle could have walked through that "fence" so easily. But apparently the farmer had conditioned them by commonly erecting an electric fence. A few harmless buzzes and they knew to stay away from boundary. They assumed the harmless twine was electric so they didn’t even approach the powerless twine used as an obstacle to their roaming out of safe pasture land.

As God’s people we also deal with real obstacles in our lives. Today’s first text speaks of these obstacles. Some are real, but others are imagined. God gives each of us the power through His Spirit to discern the difference and overcome both types.

In today’s message we want to especially consider the obstacles that are born out of our own imagination or wrong assumptions (speculations) which may enslave us. When such futile thinking becomes our major focus we resist God’s hand while He is extending it. Like the thin powerless twine that cleverly served as an obstacle to the cattle, we may fear an impotent obstacle.

What are you dealing with today? Perhaps it's a real obstacle that God wants you to overcome. If so God will lead you to ultimate victory as you faithfully look to Him for guidance and fervently seek Him about the matter.

On the other hand, is your obstacle that of your imagination or based only on assumption, not reality. You might even need to do some fact checking to sort the presumptive from reality. A challenge can appear overwhelming when in reality it’s nothing more than a vain imagination, similar to the thin powerless twine thought to be powered with electric.

As we take captive every thought and make it obedient to Christ, God is able to help us sort fact from deception. The illusions that keep us bound will be loosed to set us free so that we can be the people Christ has called us to be.

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, we not only surrender our hearts to You but also our minds. We pray that You would help us sort truth from error; to see that which You want us to see, not that which the master deceiver dangles before our eyes. So many do not live victorious lives because they imagine that which is not true; they perceive thoughts that are based on false assumptions or others' opinions. They limit themselves in areas of service where You want to grow them and make them useful for Your kingdom. Help us to seek Your will above the opinions of others or our own opinions when they’re not based upon factual criteria. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

A similar illustration to our electric fence experience is "The Elephant and the Rope".

A man was passing the elephants in a sanctuary. He suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from the ropes they were tied to but for some reason, they did not. My friend saw a trainer nearby and asked why these beautiful, magnificent animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away.

“Well,” he said, “when they are very young and much smaller we used the same size of rope to tie them and, at that age, it was enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.” My friend was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were.

Amish farmhouse with wedding addition
This is wedding season among the Amish communities. Weddings are held at the home of the bride on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I understand this season is chosen because the busy harvest is over. Yesterday I picked up a teacher at an Amish wedding near Mount Joy to take her back to her school. Above is the farmhouse with a temporary plastic-covered addition (on the right side) erected just for the wedding, which was held in the house. The wedding ceremony (which lasts several hours) is in the morning and activities such as meals, singing and fellowship last until late at night. Recently, our Amish neighbors attended a wedding celebration and didn't get home until 12:30 am. It was customary for the wedding supper of Bible times to last for seven days. No matter how long the festive occasion lasts, it's a joyous celebration for all ages to honor the sanctity of marriage!
