"The
Laboring
Man's Sweet
Sleep" Note:
This week we
will have
several
messages on
the subject of
work. Although
it may be
regarded as
not being very
"spiritual",
the Bible says
a lot about
work! Message summary: May we all work diligently at the duties God has called us to as an expression of our faith, obedience, and gratitude. Listen to our message on your audio player.
"The sleep
of a laboring
man is sweet"
(Ecclesiastes
5:12). "Then
man goes out
to his work,
to his labor
until evening"
(Psalm
104:23). But
over the years
we use this
date as a time
to examine
what the Bible
says about
labor which
is a lot.
When I
pastored I
often preached
a sermon on
that theme the
Sunday before
Labor Day in
seeking to
follow Paul's
example in
Acts 20: "I
have not
hesitated to
preach
anything that
would be
helpful to you"
(v.20), and "proclaim
to you the
whole will of
God"
(v.27). Today you may be off work and perhaps you've given little thought to labor but I hope you thank God for your job including the hard work. We believe that's one way we please and honor God! We also consider those who are trying to find work and consider the stress and worry that results from such an experience. We pray that each of us will work diligently at whatever tasks God has called us to do as an expression of our faith, obedience, and gratitude.

Today's Suggested Music and Supplemental Resources
Specific songs regarding Christians at work are hard to find except in the sense of working for God. Here's a site "Theology of Work" as well as suggested songs. "Take

This song has
really blessed
me the last
several days
with very
thoughtful
consecrated
lyrics and
will likely be
the source of
a future
message. I
especially
find the
candid line
"take away my
love of
sinning,
straighten
every bent
desire" very
thought-provoking.
