"A Lesson From Wash Day"

Message summary: Let's make every day our "wash day" as we confess and renounce our sins. Let us invite the Holy Spirit to cleanse our hearts from all impurities.

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"All have sinned and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). "The blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin" (I John 1:7). "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).

Yesterday as I transported two Amish school teachers to their homes I spotted one of the interesting distinctives we enjoy seeing here in rural Lancaster County. Monday is "wash day" in many old order homes (Amish and Mennonite), though the majority of plain families have large families so wash day can be any day with the exception of the Lord's Day.

It's pretty obvious when they've washed their clothes since most of them have a long clothesline running between their home to a distant pole or perhaps attached high on the roof of a barn. In our lead photo today it appears to be attached to a Purple Martin birdhouse pole.
These long clotheslines often have colorful clothing, though Amish wear solid colors rather than prints. I've yet to see any dresses or shirts with a printed design among the Amish. Some plain Mennonite groups wear print designs, with men's shirts almost always being plaids.

ClotheslineThe women and children hang the clothes out to dry by pulling the long clothes line through the pulley on each end. This just wouldn't work well in the in the city! I recall my Mom having a clothesline between two poles but at ground level like the one in the photo. Our neighbor still has that type and we have a makeshift line ourselves for sheets, blankets, etc.

Passing these long clothes lines on wash day reminds me of a sober reality, a glorious promise and a personal responsibility in the Scriptures.

The sober reality is that sin exists resulting in our greatest need for forgiveness and cleansing. I have long appreciated the simple definition of sin in the Westminster catechism. "Sin is any want of conformity to and transgression of the holy law of God". The Scripture says, "All have sinned and come short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23).

The glorious promise is that God has provided a means of cleansing from sin. John assures us that "The blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin" (1 John 1:7).

Our personal responsibility is to confess and renounce our sin. "If we confess our sins". This is a fundamental aspect of our relationship with the holy God. The Bible says, "He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy" (Proverbs 28:13).

John assures us that "God is faithful and just" in forgiving us our sins. What an all-encompassing assurance and peace this verse should bring to our hearts today.

"To forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." Our greatest need is finding a solution to our sin problem, yet our "faithful and just" heavenly Father has already taken care of that, not just for just a few generations, not for just one nation, nor does the sacrifice He paid for our sins have an expiration date. His sacrifice for our sins was once for all. That really is amazing, all-encompassing love!

Let's make today and every day our "washday" as we confess and renounce our sins. Let us invite the Holy Spirit to cleanse our hearts from all impurities.

All my hope is in Jesus
Thank God that yesterday's gone
All my sins are forgiven
And I've been washed by the blood

Be encouraged today!  Hebrews 3:13

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, "If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable".* Thankfully, our hope exceeds this life where we are simply pilgrims wandering through this world of sin. Because You are faithful and just to forgive us our sins, when we confess and renounce them, we are washed anew and can set our sights on heaven where sin no longer exists; where there is no sickness, toil or danger and the troubles of this life will no longer occupy our thoughts or fill our days. How thankful we are for our salvation and eternal inheritance all because of Jesus. Amen.

* 1 Corinthians 15:19

Greenhouse flower display
This creative flower display using some old farm machinery is at the Silver Spring greenhouse where I dropped one of the teachers off yesterday. This was her first day as a new teacher (20 years old) and she seemed positive and excited about it. I said to her, "the first of 180 days is over" and she responded, "just 179 to go!" Yesterday I shared a photo of the lot where the new school will be built. In the afternoon I noticed yesterday that they were preparing the site work where the new school will go so we'll watch it being built.

Cows with calves on Trout Run Road
These cows with their calves were congregating in the shade yesterday along Trout Run Road. It brings to mind Hebrews 10:25.

Finally today:

Truck
Brooksyne snapped this photo yesterday at the Mount Joy Gift and Thrift where she dropped Ester off. The driver was not present so she couldn't ask what the "39" stood for, but in looking at a photo of a pristine 1939 Plymouth, the resemblance is unmistakable, though this owner has certainly modified the original hardware.
