Wagon ride
A neighboring school visited the Amish school where we attended the children's Christmas program yesterday. It must have been fun to arrive on a long farm wagon and here they are ready to depart. As we prepared to leave in our vehicle we enjoyed watching the children pull the blanket over their heads as though it was freezing outside. But it was actually a very mild winter day in the 40's and probably felt like the 50's in the sun.

"The First Noel"

Message summary: The greatest birth provided the greatest gift to meet our greatest need.

Listen to our message on your audio player.

“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord'" (Luke 2:8-11).

The first Noel the angel did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay:
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep
On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel.

No L buttonAt a Christmas Banquet we attended I noticed one of the musicians providing entertainment was wearing a button. From a distance it looked like one of those protest buttons and I thought it rather tacky to wear such a button on a festive occasion. After the concert I went up to meet him and got a better look.  It didn’t take me very long to get the message he was conveying on his button (photo on the left)! It was a clever witness but not very clear to the casual observer that he was wearing a button that had an L slashed through (No L or Noel).

The word Noel comes from the French word Noël meaning "Christmas song", from the Latin word natalis "birthday".  Some older hymnals spell it Nowell. The first Noel was the first Christmas carol.

The original version of the First Noel dates back to at least the 17th century. In 1823, William B. Sandys (1792-1874), and Davies Gilbert (1767-1839) edited and added lyrics to create the version we sing today. The origin of the current melody is uncertain. Some historians think that the traditional melody originated in France as early as the 1200s.

It is an English carol that was sung by the village people as they brought in the Yule log on Christmas Eve each year. They would burn the Yule log to symbolize the triumph of light over darkness – a really happy thought in a place like England where the winter days are very short and the winter nights are so long. When the village gathered to sing carols of this sort, very often a choral group would sing the verses, which not everyone would know, and then the whole village would join in singing the chorus.

Praise God for this marvelous angelic message of good tidings of great joy that is at the very heart of the Christmas message. The very first recipients of the message were "shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night". These fearful and startled shepherds were unlikely recipients of the most remarkable birth announcement of all time, thus the phrase “The First Noel”.

Although angels announced the message to the shepherds I’m especially encouraged by the phrase "which shall be to all people"That includes you and me!

Have you ever been in a setting and you’re not quite sure you belong there?  Have you ever heard a great offer and you’re not quite sure it’s for you? Well, in the birth announcement the angel of the Lord makes it very clear the extent of this offer. The angel went on to declare the inclusion of the lowly shepherds, “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:11). The greatest birth provided the greatest gift to meet our greatest need.

What are you dealing with today? What’s troubling you? We remind you today that the One who met your greatest need is also interested in every one of your needs, both great and small. He cares about your sick spouse, that wayward child, the persnickety boss, and for some the physical suffering you're enduring due to the aging process. And we especially consider those whose loneliness consumes their thoughts due to the recent death of a loved one.

Today let’s turn in faith to Christ and, even in the midst of our burdens, remember the following important truth: The God who has taken care of our greatest need will also take care of our every need!

Then let us all with one accord
Sing praises to our heavenly Lord,
That hath made heaven and earth of nought,
And with His blood mankind has bought.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.

Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13

Praying manDaily prayer:  Father, we thank You for Your Son Jesus, who, by His coming to earth and dying on the cross, made it possible for us to be saved for all eternity. He came for the lowly shepherd on the hillside, the king who sits on the throne, the influential, the lesser known, and the unknown – all can be saved because of Your provision through Jesus. We are grateful for the birth of Jesus and with gladsome tidings we celebrate His birthday. Amen.

"Carry The Light"  Watch on YouTube The Asidors (family group) Brooksyne's Note:  This is one of the songs the Amish children concluded the program with yesterday afternoon. As they were singing my mind wandered back about twenty years ago when I wrote a skit using the song "Carry the Light" for the children of a church in York County where Stephen was their interim pastor for about a year. I dressed up like an old woman (back then it required a gray wig - now I wouldn't need one). Sitting all alone I was very lonely on Christmas and then a little boy appeared at my door and in his hand was a bouquet of flowers. I can't remember the rest of it but I tried to capture the message of this song, "Carry the Light".

Amish school
Yesterday we were invited to a Christmas program at a Amish one room school in eastern Lancaster County. This is our view coming in before the program. We've been invited to another Amish school program today and were invited to yet another school in our own neighborhood on Friday (though we have a conflict in our chaplaincy role and are unable to attend).

Yesterday the children sang songs, performed numerous skits, recited poems and brought many smiles and laughter to the parents, toddler siblings, grandparents, the visiting Amish school students from other schools and to those who were non-Amish that attended (I think there were two others besides Stephen and myself.)  The little room was packed. The children do a fantastic job with their memorization skills (about 22 attend). Many of our readers would enjoy seeing some photos or a video but of course we respect their wishes and refrain from doing so. It really is a special experience.

Wagon ride
Leaving the school after the program we followed the wagon through Intercourse, PA. The boys in the back were gesturing for me to blow my horn, which would hardly be impressive like a big truck.  Hearing the loud sound of the rolling steel wheels on the road brought a distinct sound!

Weaverton Coach Shop
On the way home we passed this Amish buggy lot near Bird-in-Hand, PA. As Henry Ford once said regarding the Model T, "Any color the customer wants, as long as it’s black".
I wonder if potential buyers kick the wheels?

Vallorbs friend
On the way to the program we stopped to walk-through Vallorbs, a company we had served for fourteen years as their chaplains. In the last several years we have scaled back from serving over ten companies to our present three in four locations. But we still like to get back and visit periodically and the employees seem quite pleased and surprised to see us. We also visited a former company on Wednesday and plan to do so today as well.

Crossroads class teacher's breakfast
This morning I joined several other members of our Crossroads Class ABF teaching team for breakfast at the Pancake Farm.

Resources for Christmas Celebrations
(We will leave these resources posted below our daily messages through Christmas)

Each year we share several online resources that we have used over the years and that may be a blessing to families and churches during this Christmas season.

"In Remembrance of Me" pdf  This is a passion-filled Scripture reading for two adults. Brooksyne and I have used this reading with great receptivity during Christmas Eve services many years.  We suggest, if possible, a musical background as the message is read. It is also a great lead-in to a Communion service. It should be thoroughly practiced and read with great expression.

"When Christ Was Born"
pdf This is an adaptation to the tune of "How Great Thou Art". It's a great song to sing as a congregation since most are familiar with and love the tune.

Responsive Christmas Scripture readings for church or family:
John 1:1-18  pdf   "O Come Let Us Adore Him"  pdf

My First Christmas In Heaven  This is a blessed reminder for all who lost a loved one this year. We first posted this when my Mom died in 2005.

Christmas Knowledge Test
Test yourself to see how well you know the Christmas story! After you finish there is a link to test key.
