"Make Room"

Message summary: Have you given Jesus room in the "inn" of your life and invited Him to live in your heart?

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"Because there was no room for them in the inn" (Luke 2:7).

In our lead photo we show the Rocky Acre farmhouse which is now a Bed and Breakfast. Today, in light of our text, we will muse about our lodging experiences over the years and encourage you to think about yours as well.

As children when we traveled we almost always stayed with relatives even if that meant the children slept on the floor. The few times we did use a motel, due to my mom's depression era thriftiness, we would stay in the lowest budget hotel that had a vacancy.

I suppose in part, based on my upbringing and the fact that we were "dirt poor" college students we spent the first night of our honeymoon in a budget motel, practically embarrassing in light of the type of places newlyweds go to today. However it worked out just fine and this spring we will celebrate our 49th anniversary.

Throughout our marriage we have stayed in a variety of places including bed and breakfast type places. During some conferences we stayed in nicer hotels near the convention hall but through most of our travel we stay in mostly mid-level type hotels.

The worst places also come to mind and actually provide long term memories of our experience:

Once when traveling back to Pennsylvania from a visit to our parents in the Midwest we had a hard time finding any vacancy. Finally north of Columbus, Ohio we stopped at a budget motel that had a room. At that time we were caring for Heber, an 18 month old heart child from Guatemala who was in the states for heart repair. Exhausted from the trip we quickly went to our room and laid Heber down on the waterbed as we were trying to get settled in.

Almost immediately he started crying so Brooksyne held him trying to get him settled and later put him down on the bed again. He began crying again, tears and all. We couldn't figure out what was wrong until Brooksyne sat down with him on the bed and realized the bed was piping hot. Apparently the thermostat for the water wasn't working and the temperature was extremely hot. Thankfully we got him off before he was hurt. We complained at the office but it was the only room available. Being too tired to drive further we stayed in the room and waited several hours for the bed to finally cool down. It was a miserable experience we've never forgotten. However as I recall it did have a place to put in a quarter for the bed to vibrate. (Anyone else remember when some motels had that feature?)

Today's text describes the night Jesus was born after Joseph and Mary arrived in Bethlehem, long before the internet and reservations. Of all things when they finally arrived and Mary was ready to give birth, they found there was no room for them in the inn.

Hotel Bethlehem

What might the inn itself have been like? It's easy to picture a modern inn and we may even assume it was like a nice hotel. Several weeks ago we drove through Bethlehem, PA and passed by the historic Bethlehem Hotel (above), a beautiful property that is very popular, especially during the Christmas season. It boasts a spectacular display of over 35,000 Christmas lights, a multitude of uniquely decorated Christmas trees, 36 wreaths, six 7 foot Toy Soldiers, two life size Nutcrackers and a gingerbread house modeled after the hotel.

While we may assume the inn of ancient Bethlehem was sort of a hotel, that probably was not the case. The Greek word translated "inn" can also be translated "guest room" as some versions translate it.

Some believe that Jesus may not have been born in a separate stable or barn as we traditionally picture it, but in a house with a lower floor serving as a nighttime shelter for the families’ animals. If this was true, it wouldn’t be surprising to find a manger located in that area of the house.

When Luke states there was no room in the inn, he could have meant there was no room on the upper level, which would have been full of other people sleeping due to the same census that brought Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem.

Another question to ponder is why Jesus was born in these conditions. The gotquestions.org teaching site makes this point:

"So, why was the Savior and King born in a place where animals were kept? And why was He then laid in the animals’ food trough? Surely, God’s Son deserved a high-profile birth in the most elegant of surroundings. But, instead, God’s own Son made His appearance on earth in the lowliest of circumstances. This humble birth conveys an amazing message to creation: the transcendent God condescended to come to us. Instead of coming to earth as a pampered, privileged ruler, Jesus was born in meekness, as one of us. He is approachable, accessible, available—no palace gates bar the way to Him; no ring of guards prevents our approach. The King of kings came humbly, and His first bed was a manger."

We don't know what the Inn in ancient Bethlehem was like, a posh hotel or far more likely a simple guest house. We don't know whether the innkeeper was a grump or a kind man. But Luke explains to his readers why Mary laid the precious holy Child in a manger, "Because there was no room for them in the inn". As with most Scripture this leads us to an application challenge. Have you given Jesus room in the "inn" of your life and invited Him to live in your heart?

O come to my heart, Lord Jesus,
There is room in my heart for Thee.

Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, we thank You for Jesus who modeled the supreme example of humility, when He chose to be born of a simple virgin youth, to be fathered by a young Jewish carpenter, and to be delivered in a smelly setting among noisy, dirty and loud animals. You selected an angelic host to declare the good news of Christ's birth not to the town mayor or gate keeper but to the lowly shepherds, a despised people at that time. We want to humble ourselves in Your sight, O Lord, so that You might lift us up in due season to be blessed and sanctified by You, which is our prayer. Amen.

Randy Alcorn writes:

In Christ’s day, shepherds stood on the bottom rung of the social ladder. They shared the same unenviable status as tax collectors and dung sweepers. During the time of the Patriarchs, shepherding was a noble occupation. When the twelve tribes of Israel migrated to Egypt, the encountered a lifestyle foreign to them. The Egyptians were agriculturalists. As farmers, they despised shepherding because sheep and goats meant death to crops. In the course of 400 years, the Egyptians prejudiced the Israelites’ attitude toward shepherding.

Some shepherds earned their poor reputations, but others became victims of a cruel stereotype. The religious leaders maligned the shepherd’s good name; rabbis banned pasturing sheep and goats in Israel, except on desert plains. ‘To buy wool, milk or a kid from a shepherd was forbidden on the assumption that it would be stolen property’ Shepherds were officially labeled ‘sinners’—a technical term for a class of despised people.

Brooksyne's motel memory from childhood: I was raised in a big family so anytime we traveled when I was a child we stayed overnight with relatives, not in a motel. Except for one memorable time after my two oldest siblings had left home.

Mom and Dad, my sister Elaine, my youngest brother Jody and I piled into our green Comet with an after-market air-conditioner my dad had proudly installed for the trip and we headed to Dallas, Texas. We were going to  "Six Flags Over Texas" theme park (still in its infancy stage in the 60's).  It was one exciting time for us; not only Six Flags, but this was the first time we'd be staying in a motel.

Up to this time we'd only swam in muddy farm ponds, lakes and creeks. But the bargain motel had a real swimming pool. We had a ball swimming for many hours well into the night hour, but finally the pool closed, and we headed into our room.

After we fell into a sound sleep a shrill scream awakened the whole family. Bracing for the worst we jumped out of bed to see what horrible thing was taking place. Mom, visibly upset, declared that we were all to get dressed and to pack up the suitcases immediately. We had to spend the rest of that hot summer night in Dallas sleeping upright in the stifling, hot, cramped car. (So much for the air-conditioner in a car when we can't run the engine!)

What was the big problem? Mom had gotten up in the middle of the night and turned on the bathroom light. Out of seemingly nowhere despicable roaches of all sizes and varying speeds zoomed back and forth on the bathroom floor. She had a conniption fit and declared in a voice that couldn't be reasoned with, "We're not taking suitcases back to Tulsa filled with roaches so they can breed and live in our house".  No-sir-eee! We may have been poor but we weren't dirty and, to Mom, roaches were equated with dirtiness!  (I wonder, all these years later, if Mom asked for a refund on our motel bill?)

“Light” in Christmas carols

The theme of light is common in Christmas carols. Friday we posted a short quiz asking readers to identify carols by specific phrases that refer to light. here it is again.

1)  Son of God, love’s pure light
2)  Yonder shines the infant light:
3)  And to the earth it gave great light,
4)  Light and life to all He brings,
5)  But high from God’s heaven a star’s light did fall,
6)  The everlasting Light;
7)  Guide us to thy perfect light.

See below photos for answer key

JK banquet table
Friday evening we went to a company Christmas banquet for JK Mechanical (HVAC, electrical, plumbing and solar). Prior to the meal Brooksyne and I, as their chaplains, had the opportunity to read the Christmas story and pray as the owner is very purposeful about wanting to keep this tradition his father began at the start of this business.

With Tom at JK banquet
Tom is one of the first men I met at the company when we first started in 2010. He is one of the longest serving employees in the 40 year history of this company and he recently led his 91 year old mother to faith in Christ!

Brooksyne with Bette Ranck
I had the pleasure of attending a concert in the Barn at Paradise station in Strasburg on Saturday afternoon with Bette Ranck, my good friend, who also sings in our choir at church along with her two daughters.

Perfect Harmony
Perfect Harmony sang many songs from movies such as White Christmas along with other traditional Christmas songs. The second half was filled with inspirational Christmas carols that carried the most important message about the Christ of Christmas.

2024 Christmas photo
Ester took this photo of us yesterday in our church foyer so it's just about as up to date as you'll get! The background wall includes the theme of our advent message at church "In the Waiting"

2024 Calvary Church Christmas choir
When I'm singing in the choir I thoroughly enjoy watching the instrumentalists play their instruments. They range from high school, young adults, and those who are in their eighties. How good it is that those who learned to play in their youth still have opportunity to play their instruments all these years later for the glory of God.

"Light" in Christmas carols quiz answers (see above for quiz):

1) Silent Night
2) Angels from the Realms of Glory
3) The First Noel
4) Hark the Herald
5) I wonder as I wander
6) O Little Town of Bethlehem
7) We Three Kings

Resources for Christmas Celebrations
(We will leave these resources posted below our daily messages through Christmas)

Each year we share several online resources that we have used over the years and that may be a blessing to families and churches during this Christmas season.

"In Remembrance of Me" pdf  This is a passion-filled Scripture reading for two adults. Brooksyne and I have used this reading with great receptivity during Christmas Eve services many years.  We suggest, if possible, a musical background as the message is read. It is also a great lead-in to a Communion service. It should be thoroughly practiced and read with great expression.

"When Christ Was Born"
pdf This is an adaptation to the tune of "How Great Thou Art". It's a great song to sing as a congregation since most are familiar with and love the tune.

Responsive Christmas Scripture readings for church or family:
John 1:1-18  pdf   "O Come Let Us Adore Him"  pdf

My First Christmas In Heaven  This is a blessed reminder for all who lost a loved one this year. We first posted this when my Mom died in 2005.

Christmas Knowledge Test
Test yourself to see how well you know the Christmas story! After you finish there is a link to test key.
