Bluebird at feeder (Doris High)
Our friend Doris High took this photo stating, "I know I will see Eastern Bluebirds when I put mealy worms in the feeder".

"A Charge To Keep"

Message summary: Let us all resolve to keep this solemn charge!

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom" (2 Timothy 4:1).

Baby boomersThis coming Sunday I am teaching our Crossroads Adult Bible Fellowship class of about 50 mostly baby boomer age peers. We are the generation that came on the scene between 1946 and 1964. Long gone are the days we were toddlers running around in the church nursery. Now most of us are in the fourth quarter of a normal life span. Some may even be approaching the two minute warning, although we rarely get that warning in real life.

Our study is from 2 Timothy 4:1-8, a passage read at my ordination service in 1979. Since Paul was passing the torch of ministry on to Timothy this is especially relevant for those in ministry. However it's also relevant to all who follow Christ since in a sense all are called to be in ministry (service) for Christ of some type.

The passage begins, "I charge you". This translates a Greek word in the present tense indicating that Timothy is to understand what follows as a continuously solemn charge. In other words, Timothy is to keep these words "ringing in his ears" and so to must all believers. Paul is laying a mandate upon Timothy that must be obeyed, as if Paul were the commanding general and Timothy his chief officer of battle operations. In using this verb Paul is seeking Timothy's undivided attention to the matter at hand. (Precept commentary)

May we all hear God's solemn charge to us to a life of service and take it seriously. This charge is "in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom". Over the next several messages we will examine the specifics of this charge and how it applies to our lives in 2024.

Earlier this week we alluded to a Charles Wesley hymn today's title is based upon, "A Charge To Keep Have I". Let us all resolve to indeed keep this solemn charge!

A charge to keep have I,
a God to glorify,
a never-dying soul to save,
and fit it for the sky.

Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, thank you for the generations that have carried on the Gospel message since Christ came to this earth. Each generation is called to keep on preaching and living according to Your truths. Now it's our turn. Help us all to heed and keep the charge that You Have given through Your apostle Paul. In Jesus Name we pray. Amen

Kleen-Rite expo
Yesterday we visited an expo hosted by Kleen-Rite, a wholesale distributor of car wash supplies. We have served this company as chaplains for many years. It's interesting to visit with the vendors and car wash owners as well as the employees we regularly see.
