summary:
Let us, as
God's

offer up our
praise and
thanksgiving

and every day!

“When you sacrifice a thank offering to the Lord sacrifice it in such a way that it will be accepted on your behalf” (Leviticus 22:29). “I will offer to You the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on the name of the Lord” (Psalm 116:17). “Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name” (Hebrews 13:15). Christ,
our God, to
Thee we raise
this, our hymn of grateful praise. Yesterday
morning we
attended our
Thanksgiving
service at
church. We
pulled out the
white
Celebration
hymnals from
the hymn racks
(very unusual
in the age of
PowerPoint)
and sang
several
Thanksgiving-themed
songs, and the
rest of the
hour was
filled with
those who came
forward to
give
testimonies of
thankfulness
for God's
goodness.
Children,
young adults,
middle aged
and those in
their golden
years blessed
the
congregation
with their
words and
stories of
God's
goodness.
The first
who went
forward to the
microphone
was a little
boy about nine
years old. His
homemade
pilgrim's hat
caught our
attention
right away. He
was very
articulate for
a young child,
lowered the
microphone
right down to
his mouth,
gave his name,
and then
stated, "I
thank God that
I was
adopted". He
told us he
didn't think
he would be
here today if
his parents
had not loved
him enough to
adopt him.
Though we
don't know his
fuller story
we do consider
those saved
from being
aborted
through
adoption. He
was very
thankful that
he had a
family to call
his own.
Being
spiritually
adopted is a
tremendous
blessing we
all have. "But
when the
fullness of
time had come,
God sent forth
His Son, born
of woman, born
under the law,
to redeem
those who were
under the law,
so that we
might receive
adoption as
sons. And
because you
are sons, God
has sent the
Spirit of His
Son into our
hearts,
crying, 'Abba!
Father!'"
(Galatians
4:4-6).
That
spiritual
reality should
always prompt
a sacrifice of
thanksgiving
and praise!
Scripture
teaches that
our praise
glorifies God
and, really,
aren’t we also
expressing our
contentedness
and
thankfulness
when we
earnestly
enter into
praise. When
we praise the
Lord we enter
into His
presence,
acknowledge
Him as Lord,
and give
thanks for His
steadfast love
and care.
Many have wondered, “What is the distinction between worship and praise?” Though they are often used interchangeably, there is some distinction. Worship is properly acknowledging who God is by recognizing His many attributes (characteristics). Praise, on the other hand, is based upon the ways in which God’s attributes impact our lives. In other words I praise God for His mercy because He saved me when I was lost and without hope. In our Scripture texts we repeatedly see the words; sacrifice, thanksgiving, and praise. A sacrifice is something not forced upon us, but we offer it instead by our own free will. The Dictionary.com defines sacrifice as “surrendering something of value as a means of gaining something even more desirable”. How does that definition fit into your sacrifice of praise? The writer of Hebrews ended his letter with a call to praise the Lord. “Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name". I encourage you to rest in the arms of our loving God and express your love to Him as you recall the ancient words of the Psalmist, "I will offer to You the sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on the name of the Lord". Let us, as His children, offer up our praise and thanksgiving to Him today and every day! Stephen

note: I
have played
this
repeatedly
over the past
week after
hearing it on
our local
Christian
radio station,
WDAC 94.5.
We've enjoyed
Selah's music
over the past
twenty+ years,
but this one
is a standout
of a classic
hymn written
in 1864 by
Folliot
Sandford
Pierpoint.
"For
the Beauty of
the Earth" is
one of only a
few songs
devoted purely
to giving
thanks. One of
the strange
things about
the "attitude
of gratitude"
is that we
tend to
exhibit it in
reverse
proportion to
the number of
blessings
received. The
more we have,
the less
thankful we
are. Ralph
Waldo Emerson
observed that
if the
constellations
appeared only
once in a
thousand
years, imagine
what an
exciting event
it would be.
But because
they're there
every night,
we barely give
them a look.
One
of the
evidences of
the Holy
Spirit's work
in our lives
is a gradual
reversal of
that twisted
pattern. God
wants to make
us people who
exhibit a
thankfulness
in proper
proportion to
the gifts and
blessings
we've
received.

Yesterday
we had our
Thanksgiving
meal in our
"under
construction"
dining room.
Three windows
and a door
were removed
since a wall
to the new
room is now on
the other
side. Later in
the project
this wall gets
the drywall
patched and
painted.
Here's
an update on
our house
addition since
we last posted
Tuesday
morning.
Tuesday's work
was very
limited due to
rain.
Wednesday they
constructed
the rafters.
Of course the
crew was off
yesterday due
to
Thanksgiving.
Today is a
very nice day
so they are
presently
working on
building the
gable wall in
the foreground
and hope to
have that and
the roof
sheathed. Next
week they will
build the
interior walls
and then the
rough-in
plumbing and
electrical can
proceed. (The
dining room
photo
was taken on
the other side
of the wall to
the left.)
