"A Consideration Of Hell"

Message summary: God has made a provision to escape hell.

ListenListen to this message on your audio player.

"And I say to you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him!" (Luke 12:4-6).

There's a rather stunning ad Brooksyne saw on TV the other night sponsored by "The Freedom From Religion Foundation". It features Ron Reagan, son of the former president Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy, who is an unabashed atheist. At the end he states with a mocking smile, "Ron Reagan, lifelong atheist, not afraid of burning in hell" (A link to the ad is below.)

I have to commend him for his faith. When it comes to their eternal destiny most people want to hedge their bets just in case, playing the middle. They want to believe in God just a little bit and certainly not smilingly say, "not afraid of burning in hell". But Ron Reagan is an all in atheist.

It seems in most quarters you really don't hear much about hell and future judgment any more. I also understand that in the past preachers were more willing to tackle the subject.  Jonathan Edward's sermon "Sinners In The Hands Of An Angry God" is often considered the most famous sermon in American history.

I can tell you, after 25 years of pastoring, I didn't cover the subject much, honestly less than I know I should have. It's not something I write much about either. I don't think I've ever met a preacher who says, "I just love preaching on hell". That would be a bit weird.

But it's not weird for the faithful preacher to proclaim the "whole counsel of God" (Acts 20:27) which certainly includes the Bible's teaching on hell.

Jesus did talk about hell and the theme is found throughout the Bible. In fact, Jesus talked about hell more than any other person in the Bible.

Today's text is one of them. It's not the kind of text we memorize for encouragement. It's not used on greeting cards. It has several elements that are hard sayings which Jesus was certainly capable of (see John 6:60).

"But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him!"

Even before Brooksyne saw the ad I had been musing on this subject which many trivialize today. You've probably heard someone say "I don't mind going to hell, that's where all my friends will be" or "It's gonna be one great party".

But the Scriptures never convey hell as a place of pleasure.

An interesting verse that gives us a sense of what one in hell experiences is the account of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31) You'll need to read the story if you are not familiar with it. Essentially the rich man went to hell and Lazarus went to "Abraham's side".

I want to consider two teachings today concerning what the rich man experienced in hell.

1) His condition was described as "being in torment" (Luke 16:23).

2) His interest regarding associations was not a future party with his family and friends but rather an appeal to "warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment" (Luke 16:28).

God has made a provision to escape hell. "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him."

Be encouraged today,

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, we take to heart warnings in Scripture that speak of our eternal destiny. There are dangers on earth that may kill our body, yet we are not to live in fear of that which might destroy our physical body, but rather that which might destroy our soul and thereby we would be cast into hell. Help us to lovingly and respectfully fear You all our days; You who hold the keys to the kingdom of heaven or the power to cast into hell those who reject Your plan of salvation. I choose to be among those who will forever worship You in glory. Amen.

This last weekend a huge annual antique car show in Hershey, PA. On Monday Jesse and Anna Ruth at the Old Windmill Farm gave a tour to a large traveling group that had cars (horseless carriages) from 1915 and earlier! He invited us over and we want to share some photos today.

Today's Suggested Music and Supplemental Resources

"The Great I Am"  Video  New Life Worship In considering music related to today's topic I came up empty. Any ideas? However I recalled the line in this song "heaven is real" and initially couldn't recall whether it was "hell is real". However consider that the same authoritative Word of God which we find great comfort in that heaven is real also states that hell is real.

Here's the atheist ad ending with phrase "not afraid of burning in hell" Video  His main premise in the ad is one big lie but that's for  another message.

Donate to Daily Encouragement Net We realize there are many fine ministries and causes requesting support  but if the Lord would lead you we surely need and appreciate the financial support from our readers and listeners.

Our ministry labor is comprised of approximately half our time to Daily Encouragement and the other half to our chaplaincy ministry to companies for which we receive compensation. Each of these ministries essentially is the same as a part-time job (20+ hours weekly) for each of us. Our goal for many years is that each would provide half of our ministry expenses and income.
