"Living As Strangers Here"

Message summary: I am to live my life here as a stranger in reverent fear.

Listen to our message on your audio player.

“The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, turning a man from the snares of death” (Proverbs 14:27). “Live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear” (1 Peter 1:17).

The other day I was visiting with an employee in a production shop. I wasn't paying attention and suddenly touched something very hot. My reflexes are still good and I quickly pulled back my hand from the hot surface and thankfully was not burned. Turns out it was a commercial glue gun!

Fear isn’t usually seen as positive or healthy. We’ve heard all our lives, “Get over your fear". “Stop being afraid!” “Don’t be a baby". But then we’re also taught to healthily respect the heat from a stove (or hot glue gun), the dangerous height from a second floor (or higher) window, or the electrical current from an outlet in the wall. We’re taught how to accurately assess dangers so that we have a proper fear and understanding of the situation, and respond accordingly. We wouldn't live very long if we didn't.

Many of us have memorized a Scripture that says in part, “God hath not given us the spirit of fear.” This is a stirring verse to memorize and apply when dealing with spiritual fears.

Yet the daily texts speak of a reverential fear of God which is a healthy, beneficial fear. It is greatly lacking in our day. A healthy, holy fear of God is an essential component in the life of the maturing believer in forming our attitude and approach toward a holy God. John gives perspective on the Isle of Patmos as he wrote, “Who will not fear You, O Lord and glorify Your name? For You alone are holy” (Revelation 15:4).

In a secular culture where the Lord’s holy name is commonly spoken in vain or blasphemously, often where God is  referred to as “the man upstairs”, we need a good understanding and reverential fear of God. The Bible says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7).

Our second daily verse may be one of the most ignored truths by modern Christians, especially in places like here in the USA where life has been relatively comfortable for most of us: “Live your lives as strangers here in reverent fear". We expect this would be much more striking to scores of our fellow believers who live in harsh and dangerous conditions such as Nigeria. But that could change here in the US as well.

In this text we are pictured as a pilgrim people whose true citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20), living temporarily in a world that is not our final home.

Read this verse over a few times and prayerfully ask yourself, “Am I living my life here on earth as a stranger in reverent fear?” Consider personalizing and memorizing it as a statement of resolve. I am to live my life here as a stranger in reverent fear.

Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13.

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, we read in Proverbs that “The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, turning a man from the snares of death” and “The fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.” We must choose to fear You rather than man so that we prepare ourselves for living as sojourners here below with heaven in view at all times. We can do this when we live as strangers in reverent fear of You, our Father in heaven. Amen.

(Proverbs 14:27; Proverbs 29:25)

Study note: In today's second text "stranger" is translated in various ways in different versions. See here for the list in Bible Gateway.  Other versions use sojourners, time of your exile, temporary residence, stay on earth, foreigners, pilgrimage.

Spurgeon writes, "You are only here for a while, you are sojourners, foreigners, pilgrims passing through a country where you have no abiding place; be therefore careful and even fearful lest you should become like the people among whom you dwell, have a holy dread of the contaminations of sin: “Pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:” Not in unbelieving fear, but in that holy carefulness which watches against sin of every kind lest in any way you should spoil your holy work for God."

Hebrews 11:13 states, "These all died in faith, although they had not received the things that were promised. But they saw them from a distance, greeted them, and confessed that they were foreigners and temporary residents on the earth."

Update on Ester:  Sunday evening while Ester was watching the football game she experience A/F, Atrial Flutter with her heart racing at 166 BPM. It's been about five years since Ester had her last episode which has made us all comfortable with her health so we were taken back by the most recent experience. She wrote about it on her facebook page:

I titled this "Back from Heaven" because I feel like that was what I experienced.

I’ve been putting a lot of hours at work lately and it finally caught up with me. On Sunday night around 7:03 pm my Apple Watch went off alerting me that I was in A/F (Atrial flutter). Thankfully, I was home at the time. I was actually sitting on the couch downstairs in the family room watching the Chiefs game when it happened.

I can honestly tell you I had forgotten how painful it was since I hadn't experienced A/F for several years. My throat started to burn and I could literally feel my fast heart beat through my hearing aids. My Apple Watch was saying it was 166 bpm which is pretty fast, though all my other times I had A/F my heart rate was 200 BPM or higher. (The worst attack I ever went through was when I was in A/F for 20 hours before they doctors were able to cardiovert my heart. Amazingly, I lost ten pounds due to the rapid heartrate over that expanded time. It was the worst experience of my life.)

During my recent episode of A/F I was able to get up off the couch and go upstairs to the kitchen to tell my mom I was in atrial flutter which got her full attention right away.

I slowly got my emergency bag ready for the hospital as I was in a lot of pain. I also made a call to the on-call Pacemaker Clinic to see if they could do an interrogation through the app. They were able to do that and they called me back while I was on my way to the hospital confirming it was A/F.

When I got to the Hershey Medical Center ER I only had to wait about five minutes since the Pacemaker Clinic alerted them I was on my way and my high heart rate was considered high priority. It's a good thing because the ER was jam packed with people waiting to be seen.

The nurses hooked me up to the monitors and asked questions and then I was wheeled to a room. Because the ER was so crowded with beds in the hallways they took me to the Cath Lab to treat me. About 12 to 15 medical people circled around me and hooked me up to the monitor and wanted lots of information. Like I said, I totally forgot how it felt to be in A/F because it's been a very long time since I’ve had this issue thanks to my two lead pacemaker.

They had to poke me again because the first IV didn’t work.

The doctor began talking to my mom and then he told me they would have to convert me back to normal which to be honest I figured it was gonna happen anyway since my body has never responded to medicines to correct this problem going back to the first time I went to ER in Boston when I was 11 years old.

The thought process going through my mind was, OK God, I’m giving it all to you. They put the paddles on me and put me to sleep.

I had a peaceful sleep. I don’t know if it was a dream or don’t even know how to even explain it but after they put the paddles on me and stopped my heart, only to start it up again bringing down the fast heart rhythm the doctor tried to wake me up and after several times he got me awake. I asked for my mom and they let her stand by my bed as she had been standing off to the side to be out of their way.

I told her in a very quiet groggy voice that I just saw Papa Brooklyn (her dad). As I began to tell her what I witnessed tears were rolling down my eyes and hers too.

This is what I said:

I saw Papa Brooklyn (my mom’s dad who went to be with Jesus 26 years ago.) He was wearing his cowboy hat and cowboy boots. We were at some lake that I didn't recognize. We were holding hands and talking as we walked. He told me that he saw Uncle Jody and Aunt Renda (Mom's brother and wife from Tulsa, OK) who were recently at my house for a few days and he said it looked like you guys were having a fun time. He told me to tell my mom "Brookie" hi. Before I woke up I saw a bunch of dogs running around and one of them looked like Mollie. ❤️🕊️

They ended up sending me home that evening. They wrote a note for me to stay home from work till Wednesday. As of now, I am no longer doing I-shop for the rest of the month and possibly the rest of the year. Which to be honest I’m really sad about because I love doing that job.

Ester at work

Wednesday's Update on Ester's work: As Ester mentioned in her note she was not going to do I-shop because it involves a lot of lifting and many steps (she had over 15,000 steps on her phone Sunday before coming home from work). But because she really enjoys doing I-shop she and another worker came up with a plan that would ease the work. Ester drove the electric wheelchair and gathered the groceries with others pitching in for the heavier items. I (Brooksyne) stopped by the store yesterday and was quite surprised to see her in the electric cart but she was having a grand time and it seemed she had lots of help from her co-workers. We appreciate your prayers on her behalf as you, our readers, have always been prayerful over the years when Ester is undergoing health challenges.

(Her writing above was lightly edited by me for clarification.)

Rocky's custom trike
Rocky, AKA Keith, is a man we met sitting in front of us in church several months ago. His nickname is Rocky since he has a voice very similar to Rocky Stallone!  We invited him to our Sunday School class (ABF) and he's been coming ever since. He's from Connecticut and is down in our area doing sheet metal work on a new pharmaceutical plant. He has quite a testimony. Our pets were quite taken with the big "trike" Rocky rode as they watched him from the front door.

Rocky stopped by yesterday to show me his custom-made trike made from a volkswagen bug. It is definitely a heavy duty!
