"A Man Named Jason"

"But when
they did not
find them,
they dragged
Jason and some
other brothers
before the
city
officials,
shouting:
'These men who
have caused
trouble all
over the world
have now come
here, and
Jason has
welcomed them
into his
house. They
are all
defying
Caesar's
decrees,
saying that
there is
another king,
one called
Jesus'" (Acts
17:6,7).
Jason is a
popular name
for males. I
have known
many Jasons
throughout the
years and have
a few friends
now whose name
is Jason. As
we reflect on
the people we
associate
with, Jason is
one of the
more common
names we often
hear. It is a
well-used
Bible name
but, unlike
most other
Bible names
based on a
well-known
Bible
character such
as David,
John, Peter,
James, etc.,
very little is
known about
Jason in the
Bible. So
today let's do
a character
study! This
message is
especially for
all the Jasons
out there!
Tangent note: When I meet someone with a Bible name I often ask them about the Bible character they are probably named after. The other day I was at my Amish neighbors and the mother asked me to ride my bike back to the fields and tell the boys supper was ready. They were pulling plastic from the field used for weed control in the watermelon patch. I still haven't memorized all the boy's names so I asked one his name and learned that his name was Michael. I asked him if he knew that his was a Bible name. He didn't, but he told me he did know that it was in the dictionary!
There
are at most
two Jasons
mentioned in
Scripture: one
in Acts 17
when the
church in
Thessalonica
was forming
and the other
mentioned with
absolutely no
background
detail
in Romans
16:21. Could
they be the
same person?
The record of
the founding
of the
Thessalonian
church in Acts
17 only takes
the first nine
verses and it
sure doesn't
appear to have
the makings of
a lasting
church. But
Paul's
letters,
written
several months
later verify
the survival
of the little
church.
A key member
of that infant
church and the
only one
mentioned by
name is Jason,
who had
welcomed Paul
and Silas as
well as the
new
Thessalonian
believers into
his house.
Since Jason
had a home in
Thessalonica
and is not
mentioned
prior to
Paul's
arrival, he
was apparently
among the new
believers that
had turned to
Christ as a
result of
Paul's
preaching. He
was new in his
faith, yet
this didn't
hinder him
from offering
hospitality,
though he knew
it was risky,
and he paid
the price for
it.
Any local
church is made
up of a lot of
people like
Jason: those
who make a
contribution
to meet a
need. The
early church
in
Thessalonica
needed a place
to meet and
Jason had
welcomed them
into his
house.
Consider how
this has
happened all
through the
Church age and
is taking
place right
now all around
the world.
Most of the
time these
people are not
known apart
from their own
local setting,
but their
lives and
contributions
matter a great
deal.
I've met many
people like
Jason through
the years.
Some have gone
on to be with
the Lord,
others, like
Jason in our
Bible
reference,
continue to
serve
essentially
unheralded,
since their
work is for
the glory of
God rather
than man's
acclaim.
Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13.

Father, just
as You led
Jason to
provide Paul
and the other
Christian
believers a
comfortable
place to lodge
though he
risked his
life in doing
so, You call
us to open our
doors to our
brothers and
sisters.
Someday our
freedoms, even
our life might
be at risk
with godless
authorities
for lending
support and
friendship to
fellow
believers but
we want to
obey You
rather than
man. We pray
for those who
live in a
restricted
setting where
they
experience
this
firsthand. We
pray for Your
peace,
protection,
and plan to be
fulfilled in
their lives
and those they
seek to
influence. We
desire to
follow You
wholeheartedly
and trust You
for all that
is required of
us, in the
name of Jesus.
Amen.
