It
was a
beautiful
Labor Day day
in our area
yesterday so I
took our
friend Larry
with me on a
bike ride on
the river
trail about
five miles
from our
house. It was
a special
treat to meet
up with other
friends as
well, as the
trail was very
crowded. Peter
is pulling two
carts with his
two younger
children
riding in
them, the
first time I
ever saw such
a rig, but
being a
mechanic by
trade, he made
the connection
work!
"The Man Who Ate Locusts" Message
summary:
May the Lord
empower us
today to stand
firm as John
did no matter
the
consequences!
As the apostle
Paul wrote, "For
me to live is
Christ, to die
is gain". Listen to our message on your audio player. "Of
them you may
eat: the
locust of any
kind, the bald
locust of any
kind, the
cricket of any
kind, and the
grasshopper of
any kind"
(Leviticus
11:22).
"John’s
clothes were
made of
camel’s hair,
and he had a
leather belt
around his
waist. His
food was
locusts and
wild honey"
(Matthew 3:4).
As
the days get
shorter and
nights get
cooler the
sounds are
fading
compared to
the volume
heard in
August and now
we hear mostly
the crickets.
Sometimes they
get in the
house! Their
sound is
commonly
referred to as
chirping; the
scientific
name is
stridulation.
For the record
only the male
crickets
chirp. There
is actually a
field of
science
devoted to
these sounds
known as
bioacoustics. Most
of us also
enjoy the
sweet taste of
honey (which
is essentially
bee spit). I
spread honey
last night on
some buttered
corn muffins
right out of
the oven that
Brooksyne
made. Oh my,
was it good! Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13. Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

What
a delight to
run into
Yelena and
Peter and
Yelena with
their four
young
children.
Yelena worked
at a company
we served as
chaplains for
over ten
years. She was
strong in her
faith and we
had a number
of visits
together
outside our
role as
chaplains. We
knew her
before her
marriage to
Peter so it is
a special joy
to see God's
blessings in
the faces of
these four
precious
children. A
set of twins
are awaiting
them in
heaven, as
their first
two children
did not
survive. That
was a very
difficult time
for them, but
they chose to
glorify God
even in the
midst of such
devastating
loss which is
reflective of
our theme
today...standing
firm in the
face of
adversity.
![]() Twelve years ago Peter and Yelena, along with their Russian youth group, joined us for a lively pizza dinner at our place. These polite young people expressed appreciation to us numerous times not only for lunch but also for the opportunity to minister at Longwood Manor, where we served as chaplains, at the time. We were so impressed with their good conversational skills we later considered that not one of them was displaying an electronic device, which is a huge factor in disconnecting people in group conversation. The Longwood residents said to us, "You will be bringing them back to us won't you!" ![]() Here's a close-up of Peter and Yelena Yacovich early in their marriage. Yelena became a good friend when she worked at Val-Co, a company we served as chaplains for some fifteen years. Finally

note: I
was invited on
the bike ride
yesterday but
considered it
a great day
for Stephen to
have a friend
ride along.
Instead I
stayed home
and made a
large batch of
rhubarb jam. I
opened the
freezer and
pulled out
tart cherries,
blackberries,
strawberries
and rhubarb.
It added up to
15 cups of
rhubarb and 15
cups of the
assorted
fruit. After
adding the
sugar and
boxes of jello
pectin to the
ten quart
stock pot it
turned out 26
jars of
rhubarb jam.
You say, how
can just the
three of you
eat all that
jam? We eat
only a few
jars, but I
give the rest
to friends,
family, and
neighbors and
also use them
for hostess
gifts and even
for prizes
when I make up
a game or quiz
with others
participating.
