AI fireworks
On Friday evening we went over to the Old Windmill Farm to eat dinner and watch the fireworks from the Barn at Paradise Station just up the road. It was quite a show and the children sure enjoyed it. We sat in the Lapp's front yard and had a spectacular view. The above photo was taken by Ester, however the fireworks and water in the background were added by AI! It's actually a tiny replica of the Statue of Liberty and the Gateway Arch in the foreground. If you look carefully you can also see our picket fence.

"A Sun-scorched Land"

Message summary: Today’s Bible verse can be a source of assurance for those who believe and follow in the ways of the Lord.

Listen to our message on your audio player.

“The LORD will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame” (Isaiah 58:11).

Last week we had extreme heat in our region. Meteorologists called it a "heat dome".* But late Saturday afternoon a storm came through and we got rain and heavy winds. We were blessed by the rain and had no detrimental impact but many lost power and as of this posting many are still without power. The church we attend had some flooding and most activities were canceled yesterday. It seems that part of the county was especially hard hit. We got many warnings of flash flooding in our area so through the night we had a deluge of rain. Our rain gauge from rain last night is just shy of 5 inches this morning! They are also giving warnings of more flash flooding today until midnight. What a contrast to the previous days we experienced.

Sun-scorched flowers

Due to the extreme temps over 100 degrees last week Brooksyne managed to water many of our plants morning and evening but each day they faced a scorching blast from the sizzling sun. She took extra measures to protect some of her more vulnerable plants such as using sheets to cover them. She lost a few plants but most were spared due to her extra measure of care.

“A sun-scorched land” in our daily text is a descriptive word picture not only used in the literal sense of actual physical heat and drought, but also as a picture of the sun-scorched spiritual condition of our land and those hard times we individually go through in life.

Today’s Bible verse can be a source of assurance for those who believe and follow in the ways of the Lord. There are three promises from the text that bring assurance of God’s steadfast care in sun-scorched, drought-like conditions, both literally and spiritually:

God’s Guidance: “The Lord will guide you always.” God’s faithful guidance is one of the great themes of the Bible. God “is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6). He will guide us through the pleasurable circumstances of life and sustain us in the agonizing trials believers must endure. A wonderful Biblical petition is “Send forth Your light and Your truth, let them guide me” (Psalm 43:3). Another reminder of God’s guidance is seen in Psalm 48:14: “For this God is our God forever and ever; He will be our guide even to the end.”

God’s Provision: “He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land.” Droughts, either literal or spiritual, bring about many hardships. The scorching sun has a way of sapping us of energy and increasing our thirst. Nature revolts against the lack of moisture in the midst of extreme sizzling temperatures. The believer must endure spiritual droughts and never lose sight of Him who will satisfy our needs as we continually look to Him. At times it may look like life may not work out as we had hoped or in the time frame we had expected, but ultimately our needs are met. The "needs" are ultimately determined by God not us.

Many of us have memorized the wonderful text that states, “My God shall supply ____________________ (Philippians 4:19). I purposefully didn’t complete this verse to give many readers the satisfaction of doing so and challenging others to look it up and memorize it!

God’s Strength: “He will … strengthen your frame.”
We all need renewed strength, but especially during the conditions described in this text. After watching our plants keel over, wilt, and their foliage brown due to the baking sun we also see how rain showers bring renewed vigor, strength and growth.

Paul prayed for the Ephesian believers (and through the Scriptures for all of us) “I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being” (Ephesians 3:16). Already the heavy rain we got overnight is starting to turn some of the grass that has browned in our neighbor's yard and ours as well.

Today we want to encourage our readers with this verse as well as the portion that completes it. “You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.”

Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, we pray for those areas in our world that are in dire need of significant rainfall. Send down Your rain showers and downpours to restore and replenish the earth’s nutrients so that plants and vegetation will thrive and fill the land. Likewise, increase our spiritual appetite so that we store up reserves of Your Holy Scriptures deep within our hearts that will sustain and carry us through the spiritual droughts that we experience from time to time. Let us seek You above all else so that You will be our daily guide. Out of our hearts will flow abundant springs of living water that will not run dry even in a drought stricken land. Amen.

Note from Brooksyne: I can picture in my mind an oasis in the dry and hot desert land when I read our text today from Isaiah. I can also see those who’ve been searching their entire lives for answers that will only come from having a personal relationship with Jesus. Because God has redeemed us from a life of utter hopelessness we are like that oasis in the desert. May we be His hand extended reaching toward those needing to drink from the “springs of living water” where the supply is inexhaustible and available to all who will drink and finally be satisfied.

Patriotic pets
Ester took this photo of our patriotic maltipoos
Yesterday morning we looked outside our window and spotted this masked bandit in our back yard. The large raccoon was drawn to the spilled seed from a bird feeder. Our neighbor has had two visits from this same raccoon that also checked out her empty birdfeeders. Ester named the raccoon Rocky, but we have no plans to befriend this wild animal. Hopefully, it has moved on to make its home near bodies of water and areas that have lots of trees to use as dens.
