The
iconic smoke
stacks in
Hershey, PA
"The Former Things" Message
summary:
Today's
message we
look to the
future when "the
former things
have passed
away". This
week I drove
through
Hershey and
saw the
signature
smoke stacks
to the power
plant that
once powered
the operations
of the Hershey
Chocolate
Company. The
power plant
has not been
used for many
years but the
smoke stacks
are maintained
as a visual
symbol and is
beloved by the
locals. In a
sense the
stacks are no
more than
"former
things" and
apart from
their
sentimental
value they
presently have
no purpose. We
get a glimpse
of the bright
eternal future
awaiting those
who follow
Christ
in what the
daily text
calls "the
former things".
These former
things include
tears, death,
sorrow, crying
and pain - a
partial
summary of
those
situations and
emotions that
make our
temporal
existence on
earth a
difficult
pilgrimage. Matt Redman's song "One Day" begins, One day You’ll make everything new, Jesus One day You will bind every wound The former things shall all pass away No more tears
This
present life
is very
temporary but
it's all we've
known from the
day we drew
our first
breath. From
the
perspective of
Revelation
21:4 our
earthly
existence is
referred to as
"the former
things"
which will
pass away. A
helpful
outlook is to
be constantly,
intentionally
and
purposefully
mindful of the
blessed future
that awaits
the faithful.
Whatever you
are going
through,
pleasant or
unpleasant, be
mindful that
one day these
will be the
former things
that shall all
pass away.
Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13. Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

On
Tuesday
afternoon I
rode through
the Swatara
State Park in
Lebanon and
Schuylkill
Counties. For
many years we
have seen this
decrepit house
at the
northern end
of the trail.
I don't know
how long it's
been abandoned
but here's a photo
from 2017. It
certainly
illustrates
the "former
things" in
this case
slowly passing
away. I have
no idea the
story on why
it's not
demolished but
perhaps it
still has
sentimental
value to
someone!
Along
the trail the
tiger lilies
were in bloom.
The
Waterville
Bridge
built in 1890
was used many
years for
vehicle
traffic in a
remote part of
northern PA
and was
reassembled here
in 1985
as a walking
bridge over
Swatara Creek
as part of the
Appalachian
Trail.
This
is one of my
favorite
trails with a
northern PA
feel that is
relatively
close. I rode
some 20 miles
over crushed
stone on a
former
railroad,
asphalt (part
of the trail
is on an
abandoned
highway) and a
long, somewhat
hilly, portion
called Bear
Hole Trail
that was a
dirt road.
Finally
today:
A
couple of days
ago we shared
a message
about coffee.
Yesterday we
visited with
friends and
just happened
to get a
glimpse of
Nick's socks:
"All I need is
Jesus, Coffee,
and a NAP".
Some wear
T-shirts with
slogans that
get noticed
and some wear
socks that
grab your
attention.
