Romans 8:28

"No Maverick Molecules"

Message summary: What great assurance we have that there are no maverick molecules in the universe!

Listen to our message on your audio player.

“I know that You can do all things, and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted” (Job 42:2). "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose" (Romans 8:28).

In 1981 as a very young pastor I went to a Festival Of Evangelism Conference in Kansas City. I'm pretty sure (but not positive) it was at that time I first came across the ministry of R.C. Sproul. After meeting him I began to read his materials which I have always found to be challenging and helpful.

The first video series I ever watched was his teaching on the "Holiness of God". It was a new thing at the time putting teachings on VHS tapes and I watched the series with another pastor. The entire series is available free on YouTube but really looks dated now. Yet God's truth does not change! (See below for link.)

Sproul had become a Christian as a teenager and met with his childhood minister to share his conversion in 1957. During the meeting, the minister stated, "If you believe in the resurrection of Christ, you're a d___ fool!" stunning Sproul, left wrestling with "feelings of betrayal." But it didn't deter him and he had a long life of faithful ministry before passing away in 2017.

Yesterday we shared about Ben Sasse, a former senator who has terminal cancer. As he shares his testimony of God's help through this very hard season he was interviewed by Scott Pelley on 60 Minutes.

He told Pelley his affliction was not a surprise to God. Pelley asked, "And God, you believe, has a plan?" Sasse replied, "Absolutely. There are no maverick molecules in the universe".  (see video link below)

This "no maverick molecules in the universe" phrase initially may make no sense, especially to a non-believer, but Sasse is actually quoting this statement by R.C Sproul on the sovereignty of God, “If there is one maverick molecule in all the universe, then God is not sovereign. And if God is not sovereign, He is not God.”

I believe the sense of a maverick molecule is representative of anything outside of God's control. Molecules are the fundamental components of matter and every molecule is under God's control.

God’s sovereignty is the biblical doctrine that the Lord is the supreme ruler over all reality, and nothing that exists or occurs is outside His wise, purposeful governance. God’s sovereign will freely determines the ordering of all things in accordance with His character and purposes, and as such, it is meticulous down to the smallest atom, not merely general in its extent.*

What a faith-filled, but likely often overlooked, statement by Job in our first daily text. Job had been through his great trial and was approaching the other side. He confesses, “I know that You can do all things, and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted”. In one of the earliest books in the Bible we have this acknowledgement of God's sovereignty. Nothing that God purposes can be thwarted.

Our second text is likely among the first verses many of us memorized. It is among the greatest assuring truths when enduring a trial. We are called according to His purpose. Thus even if we don't understand, "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good".

What great assurance we have that there are no maverick molecules in the universe!

Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, we’re reminded today that nothing happens to Your children apart from Your sovereign will.  Since You use both good and evil to accomplish Your purpose in our lives we need not fear what others may say or do to us.  Your Spirit abides with us helping us to trust You no matter the present or future.  Our lives are in Your loving hands.  Amen.
