Temps were in the single digits when I was out yesterday morning but it's supposed be well above freezing today. We are certainly ready for the thaw!

"The BIBLE"

Note: We did not post a message yesterday. As we get older we just don't have the stamina on busy days we once had! Yesterday morning I transported 2 special needs Amish students from their home to their school in eastern Lancaster County. (Their regular driver was ill.) This experience will likely prompt a future message. Then we had two men come over for some work on our house through the afternoon.

Message summary: Today's message is a testament to the enduring value of the Holy Scripture. It has some background information that I find interesting so I hope you will as well! It's also preliminary to tomorrow's message.

The Bible is a wonderful book, the divinely inspired, inerrant Word of God.

Holy Bible, book divine,
Precious treasure, thou art mine;
Mine to tell me whence I came;
Mine to teach me what I am:

Evidence to the value of the Bible is a method of referencing that we very likely take for granted. That is, the division into books, chapters and verses that makes it so helpful in finding passages quickly. Most books of all subject matters have chapter divisions but it's the specification of verses that is helpful and even necessary for Bible study, both personal and as we follow along in church.

To a newer follower of Christ or an unbeliever such a system may seem unusual or even cryptic. Many of us have seen the Christian witness  at major sporting events using the simple numeric reference to one of the most famous verses of the Bible, a sign posting simply "3:16".

The original manuscripts of the Bible did not have chapters and verses. The chapter divisions commonly used today were developed by Stephen Langton, an Archbishop of Canterbury. Langton put the modern chapter divisions into place around A.D. 1227. The Wycliffe English Bible of 1382 was the first Bible to use this chapter pattern. Since the Wycliffe Bible, nearly all Bible translations have followed Langton’s chapter divisions.

The Hebrew Old Testament was divided into verses by a Jewish rabbi by the name of Nathan in A.D. 1448. Robert Estienne, who was also known as Stephanus, was the first to divide the New Testament into standard numbered verses, in 1555. Stephanus essentially used Nathan’s verse divisions for the Old Testament. Since that time, beginning with the Geneva Bible, the chapter and verse divisions employed by Stephanus have been accepted into nearly all the Bible versions. (from gotquestions teaching site)

The numbers in our Scripture reference today do indeed mean something. It's the binary code for one of the most famous verses in the Bible that many of us have memorized. Binary is the language computer's use. See below for the widget I used to create this code. I sure couldn't do it without the widget. But aren't you glad you don't have to memorize it in binary code!

Tomorrow's message will be on the verse we use today in binary code. Hint: it's a verse many of you would recognize by its numeric reference only.

Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, I thank You for the simple song I learned as a youngster that has a lasting message for all my years on earth and on throughout eternity. "Its the B-I-B-L-E, yes that's the book for me. I stand upon the Word of God, the B-I-B-L-E!" We cannot live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord so we pray for continued hunger for that which Moses commissioned to the Israelites shortly before crossing the Jordan: "Fear the Lord your God, walk in all His ways, love Him with all your heart and with all your soul, and observe the Lord's commands and decrees for your own good". For our good and for Your glory we will read and heed the Scriptures provided to us by men inspired of the Holy Spirit. We thank You also for those who labored over these books dividing them into chapters and verses to help us find Scriptures more quickly, easily and in group settings. Amen.

A Scripture Reference Quiz

Today’s message prompts a quiz regarding other references of well-known Scripture verses that many of you will be able to identify simply by the numeric reference even without the book title:

Just as 3:16 brings to mind John 3:16 what well-known verses do the following numeric references go with?

   1. _____________ 8:28
   2. _____________ 2:8,9
   3. _____________ 29:11
   4. _____________ 1:1
   5. _____________ 6:33
   6. _____________ 1:8
   7. _____________ 16:31
   8. _____________ 10:10
   9. _____________ 3:23
  10. _____________ 40:31
  11. _____________ 13:1
  12. _____________ 11:6
  13. _____________ 23:1
  14. _____________ 6:8
  15. _____________ 119:105

I’ll share the answers to this quiz on Wednesday. For extra credit I wonder how many can quote the verse by memory (or your paraphrase)!

Text to Binary Converter This is how I converted the text today to binary. If you are curious what all that binary text is you can convert the binary back to the text as well here! You can have some fun with this code by placing it on your sweetheart's Valentine card... 01001001 00100000 01101100 01101111 01110110 01100101 00100000 01111001 01101111 01110101 00100001  I'm sure your sweetheart will find it to be very warm and endearing!

Coffee in binary

Years ago we visited the Silicon Valley and I bought this cup at the Intel computer museum. Any idea what it says?
