Linemen in storm

"A Lesson From Rescue Workers"

Message summary: The apostle Jude used a vivid metaphor in describing the critical rescue mission the church and every true believer has: the call to “snatch others from the fire and save them”, which is an ongoing description of the Great Commission.

“But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. Keep yourselves in God's love, as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life. Be merciful to those who doubt; snatch others from the fire and save them; to others show mercy, mixed with fear - hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh” (Jude 20-23).

We joined much of the country yesterday in experiencing a major snow storm. If you live here in the US you know all about it and many of you experienced it. The storm was forecast days ahead so many were prepared. We saw long lines and some empty shelves at the grocery stores.  Ester, who works at our local Weis Grocery Market, came home with sore wrists from running all the groceries through the line as a cashier.

We were concerned about losing power, due to the freezing rain and ice, since we are entirely dependent on electric for heating and water. But when we awoke this morning we still had power and were most grateful. According to our PPL electric company's power outage map for our  area only 19 customers in the entire region they serve in eastern Pennsylvania have no power (as of the time of our writing). That's pretty remarkable! But today we read that some 1,000,000 nationwide have lost power so we are praying for our line workers as they work during these freezing temperatures to restore power so others can live in comfort.

Today we honor our rescue workers, including linemen, as already mentioned, who are busy getting the power back on. Their jobs are not only hard but filled with danger. Other rescue workers are out on medical emergency calls and fires. We read about the rescue of someone who had fallen through the ice in the Susquehanna River.

Today we also consider another form of rescue work that’s taking place in rescue missions all over the world.

The apostle Jude used a vivid metaphor in describing the critical rescue mission the church and every true believer has: the call to “snatch others from the fire and save them”, which is an ongoing description of the Great Commission. We know, of course, that ultimately God does the saving, but He has called each of us to participate in the saving mission!

The challenge to receive Christ may come through an altar call to a group of people. It might come from a caring brother or sister to an individual who needs Christ. These are examples of only two of the many ways we seek to snatch unbelievers from the fire. Each of us are involved in the process, including those who faithfully pray for these lost souls to be saved. In Jude’s descriptive phrase the emphasis is on the urgency and seriousness with which we are to take up our call.

Today let us remember God’s call in our lives as followers of Christ. All around us there are people who need the Lord; people who need to be snatched from the fire and saved from eternal damnation. As we reach out to those living in sin, we must love the sinner but hate the very sin that has entrapped them.  Just as firemen suit up in their fire repellent uniforms for personal protection, we too must suit up in our spiritual armor to protect ourselves from the spiritual forces of evil as we reach out to those greatly damaged by the evil influences of Satan (Ephesians 6:11-17).

Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13

Praying manDaily prayer: Merciful Father, we confess that we can be impatient and judgmental toward those who reject You. We’ve come to realize that we can’t live without You but the unbeliever feels he or she has no need for You.  It seems we’re worlds apart in our outlook.  Use this passage from Jude to speak to our hearts about applying Your mercy to those who are not of the faith. They do not see through eyes of faith, but are blinded to spiritual truth. Jude also reminds us that while we must embrace the sinner in mercy and love, we must never embrace or endorse the sin. The allurement to sin is always before us, so we ask You to keep us safe. Do not let us deceive ourselves, but show us how to set up safeguards, while reaching out to those who are in sin’s entrapment. Father, we don’t want to be complacent but want to be spiritually burdened with the critical need of reaching out to “the penitent child” who needs You. In the name of Jesus we pray.  Amen.

"Rescue The Perishing"  Watch on YouTube  The Celebration Choir

Fanny J. Crosby was the blind American hymnist who wrote, “Rescue the Perishing” after an experience in a New York Mission. She worked many years with the boys and men in the mission referring to them as “my boys”. When she was asked about how she came to write the hymn that has now touched millions of lives she shared:

“I remember writing that hymn in the year 1869. Like many of my hymns, it was written following a personal experience at the New York City Bowery Mission [a homeless shelter with many derelicts of the time]. I was addressing a large company of working men one hot summer evening, when the thought kept forcing itself on my mind that some mother’s boy must be rescued that night or he might be eternally lost. So I made a pressing plea that if there was a boy present who had wandered from his mother’s home and teaching, he should come to me at the end of the service. A young man of 18 came forward – ‘Did you mean me, Miss Crosby? I promised my mother to meet her in heaven, but as I am now living, that will be impossible.’ We prayed for him and suddenly he arose with a new light in his eyes and spoke these words, ‘Now I am ready to meet my mother in heaven, for I have found God.’”

After arriving home that evening Fanny completed the hymn before retiring. Perhaps she was reflecting on the young man’s conversion when she wrote the second verse, “Tho’ they are slighting Him, still He is waiting, Waiting the penitent child to receive; Plead with them earnestly, Plead with them gently, He will forgive if they only believe.”

Yesterday during the storm we pretty much stayed hunkered in all day. I shoveled a path to our storage barn, kept the entrances open and kept the snow away from the heat pump. Last night our neighbor Leon plowed us out so if needed we can get out today. But most businesses are still closed. This week we have very cold temps all week long.

Bluejay landing at feeder
We have bird-feeders around several of our windows and the birds were pleased with our efforts to feed them. The majority of our birds were dark eyed juncos yesterday but Brooksyne threw out a couple handfuls of shelled peanuts for the squirrels. Instead the bluejays invaded our front hard. Here is a bluejay coming in for a landing.

Adrienne Moton

Adrienne Moton who worked in the abortion industry three years under the direction of the infamous Kermit Gosnell in Philadelphia, PA who is serving life in prison. She left his facility in 2008 and was on the verge of ending her own life just 1 month before she was arrested in 2010 for her complicity in crimes committed. She would spend 2 years in prison.

Since then Adrienne connected with Abby Johnson’s organization, "And Then There Were None", has experienced love, healing and redemption, has earned a degree in biblical studies, and speaks courageously against the horrors of the abortion industry. She provides pastoral care and counseling to help others find healing in Christ and is the devoted mother of one daughter. “She Was Stronger” documents how Gosnell groomed her as a vulnerable teenager for the abortion industry.

Brooksyne's Follow-up Note: Last Friday I attended an indoor gathering for pro-lifers to come together to pray and hear about the efforts of those diligently work hard to save the lives of the unborn. Adrienne Johnston was the key speaker who shared from her heart how God pulled her out of that horrific setting and now gives her opportunity to expose the reality of the abortion industry in an attempt to save the lives of the innocent babies. In her day job she has worked for UPS over the last seven years.

After our gathering I asked Adrienne what her shirt meant, "Find your tribe. Love them hard." She told me the "tribe" was speaking of those who left the abortion industry. I found this description online:  "In the context of those who formerly assisted with abortions, this phrase takes on a nuanced meaning centered on finding a safe, non-judgmental community for healing, transitioning, and processing complex emotions, often while navigating the stigma associated with leaving that field."

Carrots

On Saturday morning my Amish neighbor Levi asked for a ride to repair some plastic on his greenhouse. He has a hard job trying to keep the greenhouse heated with all this cold weather and had to regularly feed a large wood heater so I drove him over to our local hardware store and bartered the chore for a couple dozen farm fresh eggs and this bag of carrots that Brooksyne had opened so she could include half of them in a roast beef dinner on Sunday. They were delicious!
