Elk bull
Elk Bull

"Bible Road"

Message summary: Today, let us firmly resolve to stay on Bible Road.

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"Watch the path of your feet and all your ways will be established. Do not turn to the right nor to the left; turn your foot from evil" (Proverbs 4:26-27). "Show me Your ways, O Lord; teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; on You I wait all the day" (Psalm 25:4,5). "Thus says the Lord, 'Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; and you will find rest for your souls'. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it’" (Jeremiah 6:16).

Elk signBrooksyne and I started our ministry in Elk County, Pennsylvania shortly after we got married, planting a church in Saint Marys, which is still carrying on ministry 48 years later, for which we are very thankful.

Bible RoadElk County (and several surrounding counties) has the state's only wild elk but while we lived up that way it was not promoted for tourism. Now they have a world class Elk Country Visitor's Center with some 500,000 people coming in annually from far and wide to the see the elk. As you drive into the area you see Elk crossing signs similar to what you see in the rest of the state for deer.

Bible Road

The last two days I was on road trip with my friend Nick to see the elk on a nice 180 mile drive northwesterly through central PA to the Visitor's Center. Along the way we passed a little village named Potter's Mills and saw a road sign prompting a spiritual consideration. How would you like to live on Bible Road? I would take the address 777 Bible Road, if given that option!

Many of you will recall a childhood song and if you're like us you'll also recall the words. You can probably even sing along:

The B-I-B-L-E
Yes that's the book for me.
I stand upon the Word of God
The B-I-B-L-E.

Today let us consider living our lives on Bible Road in the sense of staying faithful to the Bible. Paul wrote of those in his time who, "have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs" (see 1 Timothy 6:10) having the response toward God's Word expressed in the last phrase of our third daily text, "We will not walk in it".

All three of today's Bible texts refer to "paths" which is a synonym of "road" so today let us consider an element from each one as we resolve to stay on the Bible Road:

1) We must watch our path.
"Watch the path of your feet." We have all heard the phrase, "Watch your step", especially as a reminder of caution against tripping. That seems to be the sense of this passage. We need to be constantly on our guard and watch the path of our feet in these treacherous times.

2) We must pray for God to teach us His paths. "O Lord; teach me Your paths." God has spoken through His Word. We need to seek Him daily that we might learn His ways and stay on His path.

3) We must ask for the ancient paths. "Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths." This verse is so counter cultural to our age with all the emphasis on new, new, new. I thank God for many aspects of new but we must be soberly aware of the consequences when new "truth" replaces old "truth". After all, truth does not change. We need to ask for these ancient paths found in God's ancient Word.

Ancient words, ever true
Changing me, changing you,
We have come with open hearts,
Oh let the ancient words impart.

Today, let us firmly resolve to stay on Bible Road!

Be encouraged today!  Hebrews 3:13

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, like the Psalmist I pray that You will show me Your ways, O Lord; that You would Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation. I'm indebted to Your loving grace that keeps me traveling the good path. There are many other paths that vie for my attention but I know through the Spirit and also by experience, that they are treacherous and lead me to danger, a dead end, and leave me with a spirit of unrest. I want to walk on the good path and find rest for my soul even in the midst of the dark valley experiences of my earthly travels. I'm so grateful that You walk right alongside me on the path that leads to righteousness and eternal life. Amen.

Elk Country Visitor's Center

Nick and I standing as close as we came to an elk! The photos today (except this one) were taken by Nick, who at 86 really enjoys exploring just as I do.

Wagon ride through Elk Country
A popular attraction at the Elk Country Visitor's Center is the horse drawn hay ride for viewing the elk.

Deer in Elk country
Before dusk at the recommendation of the visitor's center guide we went out to a viewing area overlooking a large field where the Elk were being seen on previous evenings. We saw deer, turkey and someone saw a fox. We heard the bull elks bugling in the forest behind the field. But alas they did not cooperate with our plans and chose not to come out!  This is what we had hoped to see:

Finally today:

Tractor with fall display
Driving through the rural area we saw many colorful fall settings. Brooksyne's note: This tractor along pulling the brush hog takes me back to my childhood when my dad, Brooklyn Sherrell, brush hogged pasture land for our neighbors and others as a side job. His full time job was driving truck for Auto Convoy. He was on my mind before looking at this photo since today would be his 92nd birthday if he were still with us. Perhaps he is celebrating in heaven since he has been there for over 25 years now.
