Our egg supply comes from this chicken farm just up the road from us. (In fact you'll see an egg I had for breakfast from one of these chickens in a photo below our message.) The wagon in the background is topped off with loads of butternut squash.

"A Lesson From Reuben"

Message summary: Today let us heed the words of Paul: "Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil" (Ephesians 5:15,16).

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"When Reuben heard this, he tried to rescue him from their hands. “Let’s not take his life," he said. "Don't shed any blood. Throw him into this cistern here in the desert, but don't lay a hand on him." Reuben said this to rescue him from them and take him back to his father" (Genesis 37:21,22).

Katz's Deli Reuben sandwhich

When considering the word Reuben for many the first thing that comes to mind is a tasty sandwich. Many years ago we visited New York City with some friends, Lee and Pam Smucker, and rode our bikes right through the big, busy city. It was an interesting experience but not nearly as peaceful as riding on our many rails to trails. Brooksyne especially recalls how harrowing the traffic was and how frightened she was! A highlight was eating dinner at Katz's famous deli in lower Manhattan where we split a huge Reuben sandwich. I especially like pastrami so it was real treat!

Katzs Delicatessen 5/26/14

As to how this sauerkraut/pastrami sandwich got the name Reuben is unclear but it likely originated in New York City and in the most credible account I read, it was named after a deli owner named Reuben. Reuben's Restaurant and Delicatessen was a restaurant and Jewish deli in Manhattan, New York City founded by Arnold Reuben. (Brooksyne noticed her tag sticking out when I posted this. She's the one with dark hair at that time. The way to see a tag sticking out is to be photographed from the back.)

It is likely that Reuben, the deli owner, was named after the oldest son of Jacob in the Bible. Reuben means "behold, a son". In our area the Amish often use less familiar Bible-based names such Reuben.

In Genesis 37 Joseph's jealous brothers were determined to "do him in" once and for all. Yet his oldest brother Reuben stood up to do the right thing by coming to his  defense. The latter part of the daily text makes Reuben's motives clear, an intent to rescue Joseph and take him back to his father.

In his book "The Invisible Hand", theologian R. C. Sproul points out that "the doctrine of concurrence refers to historical events in which the work of Providence has been acted out through human agencies. That means at the same time human agents are acting, God is acting in and through them."

The "human agent" God worked through in this case was Reuben who saved Joseph's life, although his intent to take him back to his father did not materialize (for God had another plan).

Each of us will all at times need people in our life like Reuben.

I look back over my life and share one example that might especially encourage my pastor friends. In the mid-nineties, several years after assuming the pastorate of the church I served in New England, a group rose up to oppose my ministry. It was a painful time culminating with a business meeting where my attackers had their say and I faced a vicious assault.

It was really, as most church conflicts are, much ado about nothing. After days of fervent prayer in regard to this meeting I chose not to speak out on my behalf but remained silent during the attacker's onslaught of accusations, none of them true.  A number of members graciously spoke on my behalf, and I especially recall one devoted brother who stood and spoke out in my defense while tears filled his eyes.  It was the first time I'd seen him release his emotions in such a way and it was on my behalf. He was one of those "Reubens" who brought me much comfort in a very uncomfortable setting and we remain friends to this day.

We need to understand that God is active in even the most seemingly difficult experiences we go through.  Reuben spoke out and made the most of an opportunity and we should do the same.  When Reuben acted on this occasion do you think he had the slightest notion that his small brotherly act would be recorded for all to read nearly 3,900 years later?

We all need to seek opportunities to be like Reuben.

Remember that God is still working in the difficult times and waiting periods (it may be years such as Joseph experienced). We try to figure out how it will work out, but God works in mysterious ways to perform His wonders in our lives and even in those He might use to come to our aid in particular situations. Today let us heed the words of Paul: "Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil" (Ephesians 5:15,16).

Be encouraged today!  Hebrews 3:13

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, we find courage and strength when faced by opposition or when feeling abandoned  if we remember that You are working for us even when we can't see it with our eyes or feel it in our hearts. Sometimes a mountain is moved stone by stone as You are working on our behalf which often includes other people, such as Reuben, and varied circumstances which we cannot foresee coming together in accordance to Your plan and in Your prescribed time. Above all, we must place our complete trust in You to find peace, strength, and courage as we walk with You daily. Amen.

New York City bike ride

Eleven years ago our friends, Lee and Pam Smucker, invited us to join them in New York City to ride our bikes through lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, something we never imagined ourselves doing. It was an absolutely beautiful day. Here we are with the Brooklyn Bridge (which we rode our bikes over) and the lower Manhattan skyline behind us. The tallest building is the Liberty Tower which replaced the World Trade Center Towers. There are more photos from this trip here, here and here.

Butternut squash recipe:

Butternut squash
Since Stephen has featured our neighbor's farm (lead photo) with all the butternut squash I've had requests for a butternut squash recipe. Having lived in Massachusetts for nearly eight years I prepare it the same way the New England locals and restaurant owners serve it, pureed style. It is so tasty when you nestle it with seafood, chicken breasts, etc. I don't have an exact recipe but I'll share how I prepare it. Stephen was quite pleased this morning when I prepared a small bowl of squash and avocado toast for his breakfast. Bright red, tasty tomatoes will soon be over so we're slicing them up a lot these days and also enjoying the juicy watermelons from our neighbors, though that will soon come to an end as well.

Pureed Butternut Squash

4 C. Butternut Squash
1/2 stick Butter
2 teaspoons Cinnamon
1 teaspoon Nutmeg
1/3 cup 100% Maple Syrup

Slice a butternut squash in half lengthwise (be careful). Place pulp side up in a 9X13 glass casserole dish and microwave until a fork easily slides into the pulp. (I actually prefer to peel my raw squash and cut up in small chunks since it cooks faster in the microwave.)

Scoop the cooked pulp, juice included, in a blender and puree. Pour 4 cups of pulp puree into sauce pan, add 1/2 stick of butter, 2 tsp. cinnamon, 1/2 tsp. nutmeg, 1/3 C. maple syrup. Heat up and simmer 10 or at minutes. Pour into serving bowl and sprinkle nutmeg on top.

(Now the ingredients are a guess-timate, make it according to your taste buds. Add spices a little at a time and decide what pleases your palate.) When we ate this the first time we thought it was pumpkin pie filling, as New Englanders like it sweet. I also have a sweet tooth so I'm a little heavy on the syrup. If you don't have maple syrup you can substitute brown sugar, though Ester insists on maple syrup as it is best.

An easy way to prepare multiple butternut squash is to puree squash and freeze flat in freezer bags. I usually freeze in 2 cup bags. When I want to include it in a meal it's easy to thaw and then add the seasoning, butter and syrup. It tastes just about as fresh as buying a squash and preparing it. I also freeze neck pumpkin the same way (unique to our area and so much more tasty than jack-o-lantern squash.) It's a lot of work on day one but so easy to prepare in recipes later during the fall/winter season.

Finally today:

Early this morning I picked up the Amish teachers to take them to their schools. One had prepared an arrangement that will grace the classroom throughout the day and then go home with one of the students. Isn't that a nice gesture!
