Hebrews 12:25

"Not An Annoying Chirping"

Message summary: Today, we pray that each of us will hear the One who speaks not as an annoying chirp but would truly receive, listen, and heed God who is speaking. Herein lies the source of assurance and security in these times of turmoil.

“See to it that you do not refuse Him who speaks. If they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, how much less will we, if we turn away from Him who warns us from heaven?” (Hebrews 12:25).

Over the weekend there was a deadly fire in our area killing five people, ages 1,4,17, 23 & 73, and seriously injuring others. It was caused by a faulty electrical outlet. What was a joyous occasion when family members gathered to celebrate the child's one year birthday turned into a tragedy that will scar them for life. The news reports stated it was not known whether smoke detectors were in use. It was a three story row house dwelling in Lebanon, PA.

We are thankful for smoke detectors and in the 80's we had our own experience to prove their worth (see below for that story).

Smoke detector without batteryI was visiting a friend and saw the smoke detector had the battery removed. I inquired and he told me he had removed it because it kept going off when his wife cooked (it was in the kitchen) and the chirping was annoying. Well, I gave him a mild scolding and told him to place it elsewhere or get a better smoke detector! They have types for the kitchen that you can temporarily silence.

There are a lot of chirps and beeps in life but we must have discerning ears, open hearts and knowledgeable minds to sort them out.
Today let us consider a steady “chirping” that annoys many and is largely ignored; the warnings from God who is speaking and warning us from heaven.

Our text today, “See to it that you do not refuse Him who is speaking ... and turn away from Him who warns us from heaven.” This is a powerful passage that is well worth memorizing.  In fact I suggest making it personal such as “I must see to it that I do not refuse Him who is speaking and turn away from Him who warns me from heaven.”

God is speaking today.  Perhaps Francis Schaeffer was paraphrasing this passage when he titled his book, “He Is There and He Is Not Silent".

Let’s consider some ways that God speaks to us today:

1) He speaks through His inspired Word and by His Spirit, which bears witness to the Scripture. He does not give new revelation but confirms that which is already spoken through the prophets and the apostles.

2) He speaks not from Mount Sinai, which was on this earth, but He speaks from heaven through signs and wonders, earth’s calamities, and even through the folly of man. Turn on the television or read the news and the folly of man is on full display for all to view. The consequences of their folly is consistent with the warnings God has repeatedly given us as to why we should obey.

3) He speaks powerfully and effectually through the church body He established during the Acts of the Apostles and through His appointed leaders, “So Christ Himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip His people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:11-13).

4) He speaks to us through the godly actions and attitudes of men and women, boys and girls. As the old adage goes, “More is caught than is taught". What are we teaching others by our actions and attitudes? I asked a woman whose grandmother passed away at 101 years, “What is one thing you remember most about your grandmother?” She responded very quickly, “I never heard her complain.  She was a very content woman.” This grandmother spoke through her attitudes perhaps more than her words.

The latter portion of Hebrews 12 speaks of receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken. Our focus must be on this Kingdom not on the kingdoms of this world, which most certainly are shaking and indeed rise and fall. But God’s Kingdom is steadfast and abides forever!

Consider how vitally important our daily text is to the human race. God is speaking, He is not silent. In fact the book of Hebrews is all about God speaking; through the prophets, through His Word, through His Son and through the great cloud of witnesses mentioned in Hebrews 11. Since He is always speaking we must “see to it that [we] do not refuse Him who is speaking.”

The majority refuse to listen to God who is speaking through His word, through other believers and often He speaks personally to our conscience. But we, as His followers, must keep our eyes open and our ears tuned to His warnings. The Amplified version expands the challenge even more: “See to it that you do not reject Him or refuse to listen to and heed Him who is speaking to you now.”

Today, we pray that each of us will hear the One who speaks not as an annoying chirp but would truly listen and heed God's messages, for our benefit and for His glory. Herein lies the source of assurance and security in these times of turmoil.

Speak, O Lord, as we come to You
To receive the food of Your Holy Word.
Take Your truth, plant it deep in us;
Shape and fashion us in Your likeness,
That the light of Christ might be seen today
In our acts of love and our deeds of faith.
Speak, O Lord, and fulfill in us
All Your purposes for Your glory.

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, we recognize You as our Creator and Christ as our Savior. Therefore, we do not reject You, but receive Your words of instruction, warning, assurance and affirmation. We not only want to give attention to Your teachings, but we want to observe and obey them as we live out our lives here on earth. Through the grace given to us by Your Spirit, and by the personal resolve we make to obey You even when it is tempting not to do so, we find spiritual victory and receive Your commendation which is far greater than man’s applause. Amen.

Regarding our fire call: When we lived in northern Pennsylvania I had done some service work on my forced air furnace earlier that evening and in the course of tightening the belt from the motor to the blower, I had tightened it too much. When I turned the power back on the thermostat did not immediately call for heat. Later when we were in bed the thermostat called for heat and the motor came on but since I had over-tightened the belt it was bound up and filled the duct-work with smoke. This in turn filled the duct work in our home with smoke. The very first fireman who arrived immediately set foot in our home, smelled the air, and said "Where's your furnace?" He immediately identified the problem! However they stayed until the smoke was cleared from the house using large exhaust fans. Afterward, we felt a bit embarrassed at all the attention from our neighbors who had gathered in our driveway at 2:00 in the morning. But we felt a bit more justified at calling the firemen to rescue us after they let us know that if they hadn't been called we could easily have succumbed to the smoke inhalation during our sleep and not have awakened.

Nick's 86th birthday party
On Saturday Drema, sitting next to Nick Nichols, threw a surprise 86th birthday party where he was guest of honor. I played a small part in the surprise by inviting him to breakfast as Drema was transferring the food she had secretly prepared at home, to the pavilion where Nick was genuinely surprised when friends and family gathered to celebrate his life.
