Fog on Chesapeake Bay
Fog over Chesapeake Bay at Sandy Cove

"Like A Morning Fog"

Note: Due to travel a message was not prepared yesterday.

Message summary: A consideration of the temporariness of life.

Listen to our message on your audio player.

“How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone” (James 4:14).

Over the last two days we visited Saint Michaels, a small Maryland fishing village on Chesapeake Bay. We had a great time riding bike trails and sightseeing and will share some photos today and tomorrow. Through the years we have enjoyed various visits to the eastern shore, the part of Maryland that is east of the Chesapeake Bay. It's so different from the rest of Maryland!

Years ago we attended a Pastor’s Retreat at Sandy Cove, also along Chesapeake Bay, but way farther north.  I got up shortly after sunrise, took a short walk, and then walked out to the end of a long dock. Not a cloud was in the sky and the radiant sun made the still water in the bay appear as shining glass. I stood looking out over the dock for a few minutes enjoying the peaceful view of the clear waters. The scenic view was a sharp contrast to the fields of corn that I see every day at home in my neighborhood! (Although the corn was harvested while we were away this week!)

But within minutes the bright aquatic scene evaporated as a heavy fog enveloped the area, completely obscuring the inspirational view I was taking in as I awakened that morning.  The reflective glassy water turned into cloudy steam rising.  It lasted for a short time and then lifted but I managed to take the above photo.

When I think about the early morning fog a song comes to mind that especially moves me into grateful worship toward God. “Be Unto Your Name” is a worshipful song that contrasts God’s time perspective to our finite earthbound way of reckoning time:

We are a moment, You are forever.
Lord of the ages, God before time.
We are a vapor, You are eternal
Love everlasting, reigning on high.

Songwriters Lynne DeShazzo and Gary Sadler share their thoughts about the process of writing this song:

“We started talking about how fragile and temporal life is ---that it’s just a vapor or a moment and how our lives pass so quickly and yet God’s life goes on and on forever. Juxtaposed against the vastness and eternity of God, all that we could say in the chorus of the song we wrote is what anyone would say when faced with that reality – Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty. It seemed to echo a heart expression of every believer – awe, humility and reverence in the light of One so great.”

James writes of this in our daily text: “Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.” Another version states, “You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.” Based upon our present comprehension of time this may be hard to grasp although I notice time seems to move a lot faster as I’m quickly rolling along in the life cycle.

Some years ago an acquaintance, whose daughter gave birth to premature twin granddaughters, contacted us. It was a very sad note telling us that one baby had already died and the other (at last notice) was just clinging to life. He shared this perspective:

“I’m going to bury one of my granddaughters this week. I’ve buried a wife, but this is not the natural order of things. The other twin is still fighting for her place in what we currently call life. As always I have faith in Jesus.”

In re-reading his note I am intrigued by his phrase, “her place in what we currently call life.” His wording brings about an interesting spiritual perspective. I consider Paul’s challenge in 1 Timothy 6:19 to “take hold of the life that is truly life”. Of course he is speaking of eternal life as we “lay up treasure as a firm foundation for the coming age”.

Jeremiah wrote, “But the LORD is the true God; He is the living God, the eternal King” (Jeremiah 10:10). Three words describe the immutable God of the universe; true, living and eternal.

Consider each of these bedrock adjectives (true, living, eternal) in light of the shifting sands of this world and life as we know it. They're just as valid in describing God today as they were 2,600 years ago, for God does not change. They describe the One who said “I am the God of…” The present tense is always necessary in describing the true, living and eternal God. He always “is”.

The song I quoted in the earlier part of the message goes on to proclaim,

Holy, Holy Lord God Almighty.
Worthy is the Lamb who was slain.
Highest praises, honor and glory.
Be unto Your name, be unto Your Name.

Be encouraged today!  Hebrews 3:13

Praying manDaily prayer: Eternal God, faithful throughout the ages, You are worthy to receive glory and honor and power.  How grateful we are for all Your works and for Your redemptive love that saves us from our sins.  Our life is but a vapor here, but everlasting in the life to come so keep us mindful of eternity in the midst of our temporal existence. In doing so our attitudes and choices will reflect those we will make in heaven, not those of this world that is vanishing. Amen.

We received an interesting note from long time reader Ken, who pastored for many years in Maine. He presently serves as a hospital chaplain. A recent message prompted Ken to share the following amazing story:

Your DE message reminded me of a dear friend who ultimately went home at the age of 105 years. She served faithfully in a myriad of ways throughout her years and finally gave up teaching Sunday School at age 99.

In the town her church is located they have an annual festival lasting through the given weekend. It occurs in Lisbon Falls, ME and it is a festival that celebrates the Maine State Soda - Moxie. The festival itself has a parade on the Saturday morning of the Festival. It has grown quite large over the years.

The year our friend turned 90 was the year that her pastor turned 45. Of course, this meant that our friend was twice the age of her pastor. They decided to enter the parade riding a bicycle built for two. The pastor took the front and our friend took the back. She often felt sorry for the pastor because she wasn't able to pedal the bike as well as he did.

They continued their participation the next year and highlighted the church as well, but after the second year a tradition had been born. They rode each year for a total of ten years capping it off when she was 100 years old. That last year they rode the bike for 17 miles. During that decade of participation they took home several awards from the parade, and our friend was named as the Grand Marshall of the parade one year.

She did note one year that it was taking longer to recover from the parade each year and that last year it was about 4 days before she felt recovered.

Her service to the Kingdom was noted in several articles that had been written over the years about them both. She did serve in a variety of ways, including being District Missionary President for 47 years, President of the Christian Women's Temperance Society for a number of years as well.

When she was about 96 she received a call from the Ken Burn's production team and was invited to be interviewed for his production of the Documentary on Prohibition which went three episodes for a couple of hours each. I believe she appears in the second episode and was one of a few who have lived during that time and had her thoughts about those days.

The posting you wrote was a pleasant reminder of the wonderful woman who I was very blessed to know well.

Maryland State House
Before crossing the Bay Bridge to the eastern shore we drove through Annapolis to see the state capitol and the Naval Academy. The Maryland State House is the oldest state capitol in continuous legislative use and is the only state house ever to have served as the nation's capitol. Looking on Google Maps it seems Annapolis has more boats then any where I've been.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge
Crossing the very long Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

Kent Island deer
A very calm deer along the trail with Chesapeake Bay in the background.

Cross Island Trail
Tuesday afternoon after crossing the Bay Bridge we rode 18 miles on a trail on Kent Island which included this long raised board walk.

Finally today:

Singing national anthem at Mission BBQ
On the way down we stopped at Mission BBQ for lunch. We've eaten at Mission BBQ several times but were unaware that right at Noon an alarm goes off, the employees stop what they're doing and ask customers to join them in standing to sing "The Star Spangled Banner". The video  displays the American flag blowing in the breeze and voices leading us in the National Anthem (as seen in monitor above the customers). We don't know if this is done at all Mission BBQ restaurants or just in Baltimore where the national anthem was written, but it was a moving experience.
