"The Martyr’s Oath"

Message summary: The godlessness that prevails in our land the climate is rapidly changing in North America for the Christian believer. We need to take necessary steps to ensure that we are grounded in our faith, making and keeping Jesus the very center of our lives. May the Lord grant each of us an unwavering faith such as that of Paul who boldly proclaimed, "I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die for the name of the Lord Jesus".

Then Paul answered, “Why are you weeping and breaking my heart? I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus” (Acts 21:13).

A missionary group in India has their missionaries sign a Martyr’s Oath which in part states: "I surrender this body on earth to the perfect will of Jesus and, should my blood be spilled, may it bring forth a mighty harvest of souls". When I graduated from Bible College and went through the credentialing steps for ministry there was no mention of a Martyr’s Oath. At that time in America it wasn't something we gave much thought to in our ministry call here in the U.S., but that could be changing.

Many observe that persecution of Christians is on the rise all around the world which is primarily due to Islam. However all through the ages in various ways and to various extents Christians have been persecuted, beginning in the New Testament period. The first several centuries were especially brutal. But the last century has also been brutal due to communist regimes and Islam. Now we have that coming in our own country from many that viciously hate the truth.

Today’s Scripture text expresses the heart of the Apostle Paul. He was going to Jerusalem but had been prophetically warned of the persecution that awaited him there. His followers were greatly distressed and entreated him not to go. This stirred Paul’s emotions and he pleaded with them, “Why are you weeping and breaking my heart?” What a touching statement regarding the value Paul placed on relationships.

Paul, who was firmly committed to his brothers and sisters in the faith was even more committed to his high calling of God in Christ Jesus. The Spirit of God compelling him to “go” was more persuasive than his ministry partners begging him to “stay”. He fully realized the possible consequences and yet he forthrightly declared, "I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus".

“Ready to die” – This statement can correctly refer to our preparation to die in regards to our having accepted Christ as Savior and having made peace with God. It might also be used in the sense of having our earthly affairs in order such as preparing a will, making financial arrangements for family members, planning our funeral, etc.

However “ready to die” in this context means much, much more than this to Paul and so many of our brethren. In the daily text he is expressing a willingness to suffer and die for Jesus. Although he didn’t die for his faith in Jerusalem he did eventually die as a martyr. He had also witnessed many others who died for their faith, beginning with Stephen. He even consented (approved) of Stephen's stoning.

Bible commentator Albert Barnes observes, “This (being ready to die) was the true spirit of a martyr. This spirit reigned in the hearts of all the early Christians.”

Today I struggle as to how I can effectively bring this message to a close. I realize for some of our readers this devotional thought is very close to home since they live in a place where the possibility of suffering or dying for Christ is a daily reality. Others may be thinking, "That could never happen here".

Given the godlessness that prevails in our land the climate israpidly changing in North America for the Christian believer. We need to take necessary steps to ensure that we are grounded in our faith, making and keeping Jesus at the very center of our lives. May the Lord grant each of us an unwavering faith such as that of Paul who boldly proclaimed, "I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die for the name of the Lord Jesus".

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, may our heart’s cry be the same as that of the Apostle Paul who declared, “For me to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Physical suffering and persecution for the sake of Christ will prove our faith to be genuine and will gain for us a crown of life. Suffering and persecution here on earth is temporal, but a crown of life is eternal! Help us to live not just for the here and now, but set our affections on that which lasts forever so that we stay the course no matter what comes our way! May our faith in You increase as we build treasures in heaven rather than chasing after fool’s gold here on earth. And may our resolve to stand firm intensify as we see the day of Your return approaching. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Brooksyne's Note: I often read "The Christian History Devotional" by Stephen Lang and today's date coincides with the theme of our message today so I share the following article below. In his book each day of the calendar is tied to a key event of the day and today, September 18th, marks the death of the Japanese ruler Toyotomi Hideyoshi "Little Monkey" who died in 1598. He was infamous for being a Japanese official who persecuted Christians. His death ended the persecution - temporarily.

"In 1614 another bloodletting began. Over the next thirty years five thousand Christians were executed, always publicly. Many were crucified. Europeans were usually beheaded, some burned at stake. Few were willing to renounce their faith, and this tenacity served to increase the persecution. Some died slowly with boiling sulfur water poured into slits cut into their flesh. Some martyrs were suspended upside down until they died. Persecution went on so long that some of the missionaries produced manuals, instructing Christians how to behave, urging them to harbor no evil thoughts against executioners.

What is so amazing about this story is not the horror of the persecution but the steadfastness of the Japanese Christians. Once they accepted Christianity and determined to live their lives by its teachings, most of them accepted persecution. Missionaries marveled that the Japanese converted so easily - and became Christians in life not just in name. Historians have long wondered what Japan might have been like, religiously, if there had been no persecution and Christianity had spread throughout the entire persecution."

'A Spiritual Shot in the Arm': What You Can Learn from Christian Martyrs Video

World Watch List 2025 (Open Doors, a Christian ministry focusing on persecution) More than 380 million Christians suffer high levels of persecution and discrimination for their faith.  Video  I dedicate this to Dennis Shelley, a lifelong missionary to Nigeria, who regularly reminds our ABF (Sunday School) class of the persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

Here's a fuller expression of the Martyr's Oath I came across.

All graduates of Emmanuel Theological Seminary and Bible College in Kota, India are required to make a “martyr’s oath”:

1. I stand with the apostle Paul in stating that “For me to live is Christ and to die is gain.”
2. I take a stand to honor the Lord Jesus Christ with my hands to serve all mankind.
3. I take a stand to honor the Lord Jesus Christ with my feet to spread the gospel to all the ends of the earth no matter what the cost.
4. I take a stand to honor the Lord Jesus Christ with my lips by proclaiming the Good News to all who hear and by edifying the Body of Christ.
5. I take a stand to honor the Lord Jesus Christ with my mind as I meditate upon His Word and His promises to me.
6. I give my earthly treasures and all that I possess to follow the way of the cross.
7. I commit to love my family, orphans, widows, lepers, the wealthy and the poor the way that Christ loved the church.
8. I surrender my will and life to His will and life.
9. I commit to the service of the Lord by being a good steward of my time.
10. I surrender this body on earth to the perfect will of Jesus, and should my blood be spilled may it bring forth a mighty harvest of souls.
11. I pledge allegiance to the Lamb. I will seek to honor His command. I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes.
12. Lord Jesus, Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
13. I love my India and my fellow citizens, and I claim India for Christ.
