Lettuce clamshell

"Lettuce Sermon"

Message summary: Let us hold unswervingly to our hope in Christ!

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful" (Hebrews 10:23).

The other day Brooksyne made salad for our dinner. Rather than have another plate to wash she just served me in the clear plastic clamshell container the lettuce came in. I'm the type that curiously reads the back of packages but this message was to be read from the inside. At first glance I thought there was an apparent typo until I read it again, "Done Already? Lettuce know what you think".

Well, it was a good salad especially after Brooksyne doctored it up but the message prompted a long ago memory. One of the first sermons I ever preached was from the book of Hebrews and throughout the message I repeatedly used the phrase "Let us". After the message Jeff, a Bible College friend came up to me, shook my hand and said, "Thank you for your salad sermon"!

The author of Hebrews uses the phrase "let us" twelve times. When I read or hear sermons preached using this phrase (also known technically as the cohortatory) I am encouraged, as it seems the author or preacher is leading me, not pushing me. The writer conveys that he is facing the same circumstances as his readers so he presents a form of personal resolve in his writing.

Today's text is one of those "Let us" verses in Hebrews. This text is the singular key text in the entire book of Hebrews. This call to faithfulness is directed to the earliest believers who were the initial recipients of this Scripture and to all others through the ages of the Church, including each of us today. That's a vital way we read the Scriptures.

We are to "hold unswervingly to the hope we profess". Of course primarily this hope we profess is the hope we have in Christ. Earlier in the book of Hebrews we read, "We desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the end" (Hebrews 6:11). And in 6:19 he reminds us that "We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure".

And this hope we affirm is absolutely secure, "for He who promised is faithful".

A.W Pink, a British writer who has long been with the Lord, dying in 1952, wrote in his classic book "The Attributes Of God" concerning God's faithfulness:

"God is true. His Word of Promise is sure. In all His relations with His people God is faithful. He may be safely relied upon. No one ever yet really trusted Him in vain. We find this precious truth expressed almost everywhere in the Scriptures, for His people need to know that faithfulness is an essential part of the Divine character. This is the basis of our confidence in Him. But it is one thing to accept the faithfulness of God as a Divine truth, it is quite another to act upon it. God has given us many "exceeding great and precious promises", but are we really counting on His fulfillment of them? Are we actually expecting Him to do for us all that He has said? Are we resting with implicit assurance on these words, "He is faithful that promised" (Hebrews 10:23)?

Rest in this wonderful assurance today. Let us hold unswervingly to our hope in Christ!

Be encouraged today!  Hebrews 3:13

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, in this ever-changing society where transition beckons us daily, You are the Faithful One. As we hold unswervingly to the hope we profess we will not be swayed to the right nor to the left. And we hold to this hope because You are faithful to Your Word and Your divine character. Though the heavens are silent at times and the world continues to slide into decadence and intolerance toward true Christians we remain faithful. As we hold unswervingly to the hope we profess we will not give up due to weariness, weakness, or a wayward heart, for Your unchanging truth makes the triumph certain. Amen.
