2025 "The
Man, The Myth,
The Legend" Message
summary:
Let us live
life well and
leave a mark
on our sphere
of influence,
however big or
small that may
be. "Only one
life, ’twill
soon be past,
only what’s
done for
Christ will
last". Listen to our message on your audio player. "For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: 'Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you'" (Romans 12:3). Last Friday I was visiting with the employees in a company and walked into an engineering room. When Todd, the supervisor, saw me he greeted me theatrically with this proclamation, "The man, the myth, the legend". I think that's the only time in my life I have been greeted that way! Todd is a large man about 6 foot five inches and a retired marine so it carried a lot of weight coming from him! I have heard the phrase before but not for a long time. It sounds like something Howard Cosell (a sport's broadcaster in my younger years) would say about a prize fighter. Actually the term originated with circus-master PT Barnum. I have to admit on hearing the phrase I sucked my gut in and did my best to play the part as the others in the room got a chuckle. But is it true? "The Man". Well, I am indeed a man, going back to the pattern established at Creation when God made us "male and female" (Genesis 1:27). I am objectively a male. The nonsensical woke notion of being "assigned" male or female at birth because later a person might decide they want to be a different gender was unimaginable in 1954 when I made my arrival! "The Myth". I am not a myth but I am a mist (see James 4:14). I will only be on this earth for a tiny blip in the span of eternity. At 70 life seems a long time from our current perspective but, as missionary pioneer C.T. Studd who lived 70 years wrote, "Only one life, ’twill soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last". "The Legend" The dictionary defines legend as "a famous or important person who is known for doing something extremely well". I certainly don't want to be "a legend in my mind", which simply put, means I would have an exaggerated sense of my own self importance. Paul wrote in Romans 12:3, For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: "Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you". I am not famous and any importance I have will be determined by God. But I want to live my life well and leave a mark on my sphere of influence, however big or small that may be. I don't believe we should strive to be a legend but each of us should have the desire to leave a legendary impact. Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

study: I
met Ron Hoover
about 20 years
ago. At that
time he had
retired from
the business
world where he
served as a
CEO in
numerous
companies. He
started a
local ministry
mentoring
younger
business
leaders to
lead impactful
lives for
Christ. He has
had an impact
on many,
including me.
He recently
wrote and
shared that he
and his wife
Bonnie now
have a
ministry
praying for
younger
leaders and a
deeper
ministry of
prayer for
broken
families. His
email conveyed
the same zeal
I saw when I
first met him.
He's
practicing
Romans 12:11,
"Never be
lacking in
zeal, but keep
your spiritual
fervor,
serving the
Lord". In
my view they
are both
leaving a
legendary
impact.
![]() On
Sunday morning
while I was
watering my
flowers I was
mesmerized by
the bright
centers of the
deep purple
morning
glories. I
planted these
probably 20
years ago and
they pop up
every year all
over my yard.
I pull them
out by the
hundreds and
have declared
"I will never
plant them
again", as
they are
busybodies
that don't
leave their
neighboring
plants alone;
in other words
they are quite
invasive. But
this year I
changed my
attitude,
applauded
their beauty,
and was
enchanted by
their
translucent
centers that
radiate the
sun's light. I
began to
worship God as
I thanked Him
for His
creative
beauty.
