  Horses along Trout Run Road
These horses peacefully graze in a pasture along Trout Run Road alongside the rural road where we bike in our neighborhood. They have a pretty easy life, with their owners essentially caring for them as large pets. Do you think it crosses the horse's mind about their easy life when they see the team of horses working the fields just across the street on the Amish farm!

"Divine Power Transmission"

Message summary: Today God's power is is still in transmission. He is still touching people's lives with His healing power. He often uses human agents in the transmission of His power but He also works sovereignly and has a set purpose for each of our lives. May Christ be glorified in and through us today!

"At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from Him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched My clothes?'" (Mark 5:30).

Ryobi hedge trimmerFor many years we have enjoyed using cordless battery-operated lawn equipment. We have a 40 watt push lawn mower for the back yard, string trimmer, hedge trimmer and blower. They are sufficient for our size needs and it sure is nice not having to mess with a cord!

But for many years we used equipment that was corded and ran long extension cords to reach the areas needing the service. Once Brooksyne was trimming some hedges when suddenly the hedge trimmer stopped working. After she carefully checked out the recently purchased trimmer and could find no reason for the malfunction she called for me to check the outlet to make sure the plug was still in.

It was but I wondered if she might have tripped a circuit so I plugged something else in and it worked fine. Then I checked the hedge trimmer wondering if it had overheated, jammed or perhaps the motor had blown but saw nothing visibly wrong with it. We were both stumped and a bit frustrated since we wanted to complete the project! Brooksyne indicated her irritation by declaring in an angry tone, "I can't believe this trimmer is ready for the junk pile already!"

Finally I checked the long extension cord she had used to reach the project. Turns out she had cut the cord nearly in half with the hedge trimmer, but enough of the outer cord was still intact to hold it together and masquerade the damage. That could have been dangerous!

It didn’t help that it was a green cord, not a very good color to use when trimming green shrubs with piles of green foliage spilling over the cord! I spliced the cord back together and it worked but I came to see the reason using a bright orange or yellow cord is important for trimming hedges. Of course using battery-operated cordless equipment works even better!

Transmission of power is something most of us take for granted. We flip a light switch on without thinking about the power instantly transmitting through wires which makes the light come on.

Today let’s examine an occasion where there was a transmission of divine power, the healing of a woman who had a bleeding issue for 12 years. Her condition would have made her a social outcast. The best medical care of her day was of no help for she "had suffered much under many physicians" (v.26). This is one verse you will never see on the wall in the doctor's office! She had also exhausted her finances but her medical condition only worsened.

She heard the reports about Jesus and His healing power but, likely, due to the social shame of her disease, did not choose to approach Him publicly. Instead she "came up behind Him in the crowd and touched His cloak, because she thought, 'If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed'" (Mark 5:27,28).

"Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering" (v. 29). Try to put yourself in her place and sense the tremendous joy and relief that flooded her spirit as she experienced the healing power of Almighty God.

"At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from Him". The dispenser of healing power realized the uniqueness and urgency of this woman's touch of faith. After all, many were also touching Him when He asked the disciples, "Who touched My clothes?"

Touching JesusThe disciples must have wanted to scratch their heads at Jesus's question when they responded, “You see the people crowding against you…. and yet You can ask, ‘Who touched My clothes?’”

"But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came with fear and trembling and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth." That's a powerful verse! She knew something had happened to her.

A transmission of power had taken place from the Healer to the healed and Jesus said to her, "Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease".

Today His power is not cut off that He does not have the power nor is His ear deafened that He cannot hear our pleads. He is still touching people's lives with His healing power. He often uses human agents in the transmission of His power but He also works sovereignly and has a set purpose for each of our lives. May Christ be glorified in and through us today!

Praying manDaily prayer: We praise You, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and God of all comfort who helps us in our daily trials and meets our every need. When we come up against afflictions and trials that exceed our own ability to endure we rely not on ourselves but on You, all-powerful God, who heals the sick and raises the dead, who delivers us from deadly peril. It is on You that we have set our hope, confident that You will continue to deliver us, that You will make a way where there is none. We trust in You, our sovereign, holy and all-powerful God for everything we have need of. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

David Harrup "Difficulties"

Sunday we heard an outstanding message on the subject of suffering from our Mission Pastor, David Harrup. Mary, his wife, has had a lengthy battle with cancer which made his message very personal and from the heart. If you care to watch it is is cued to the beginning of his message in this YouTube video.

Regarding yesterday's message about relationships we received this thoughtful response from Susan:

"Good morning to the Webers! Your message today sparked many reflections in me regarding community in the Christian world. I believe in the two Kingdom perspective, The Kingdom of Christ and the Kingdom of the World. The two are mutually exclusive although kingdom Christians are to mirror Christ to the world. The Kingdom Of Christ should look to others as a community that reflects Jesus Christ and it depends on the interaction and the "one anothering" of those who belong in that kingdom.

Unfortunately that is a very rare thing today. People attend church, individually, and often anonymously. They may listen to a sermon but there is no interchange, no community in other words to join. So many people are lonely today. Isolation and loneliness face all ages and can cause not only mental issues but physical ones as well. I work with people who are disabled. Many live in relative isolation from the community. Statistics show that people in that situation have a greater chance of dying earlier than those who have robust community connection. The church needs to do a better job in creating community . I know it is difficult today when people live far apart and life centers on things outside of the local church. But it is imperative, the way I see it, for the church to be firm in its commitment to community and its desire to include (and instruct) those who follow our Lord and Saviour, Jesus.

Marietta historical home
Yesterday morning I joined some friends from our ABF class for a bike ride along the Susquehanna River. In Marietta I passed the old houses that are in the Front Street Historical District. These homes were built in the early 1800's.

Tree growing on mile post
Along the trail I passed this mile marker with a small tree finding a home  in the rotted spot at the top of the post. I think this illustrates the seed in the "Parable Of The Sower": "Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root."
