1 Peter 1:3-5

"The Living Hope"

Message summary: The living hope for the follower of Christ is a result of God’s great mercy and the new birth He has given us, grounded in the glorious resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope" (1 Thessalonians 4:13). But we have a hope, a living hope! "For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep" (1 Thessalonians 4:14,15). "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade -- kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time" (1 Peter 1:3-5).

For those who believe in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ what an aspiring perspective hope brings to any earthbound disaster or personal loss. What a tremendous spiritual blessing it is to having a living hope! A simple definition of hope is an emotional state, the opposite of despair, that promotes the belief in a positive outcome related to events and circumstances in one’s life. But Biblical hope is grounded in the absolute certainty of God's care, not just a wishful thought for a positive outcome that may or may not come true.

Sadly, there are scores and scores of people who live day after day without a Biblically grounded hope. These are the kind of people that Paul spoke of in his letter to the Thessalonian believers who
"grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope". But for those who have faith in Christ, upon the death of a loved one, we are not to grieve as one who has no hope. Like the Thessalonian believers, because of Christ, we too have a living hope.

But at times, even for the believer, hopelessness and despair can steer our emotions to a place we should not enter. It happens when we take our focus off the Lord and His promises. The great hymn writer Isaac Watts provides an interesting description, "Despair tells us that difficulty is insurmountable".

Living hope for the follower of Christ is a result of God’s great mercy and the new birth He has given us, grounded in the glorious resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. The apostle Peter wrote these words to encourage believers undergoing various trials and persecutions. Some thirty years after Christ’s resurrection the church entered a time of horrific persecution during Nero’s reign. It was shortly after this that Peter was martyred for his faith.

All who trust in Christ have this living hope. As we live out our lives we have many of the same problems as those who do not have a Christian worldview. But our perspective differs based on an empty tomb and the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Our hope is alive and our eternal future awaits us, no matter the present circumstances. Billy Graham characteristically stated it so simply, "As a Christian I have hope not just for this life but for Heaven and the life to come".

Today we need to hold fast to our living hope. Never lose sight of it. Be assured, God will hold us fast. The writer of Hebrews spoke of this hope as "an anchor for the soul, firm and secure" (Hebrews 6:19). As God’s children we have a living hope and an assurance that God will see us through. I encourage you this day to keep the presence of our living hope ever before you! In doing so, I feel certain that you will be encouraged in your circumstance and more importantly strengthened in your faith!

Be encouraged today! Hebrews 3:13

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, I want to fix my thoughts upon the living hope I have in Jesus Christ my Lord. I anchor my soul in the bedrock of Your Holy Word so that when other viewpoints counter the truths presented in Your Word or when it seems my world comes crushing down my anchor remains firm. When difficulties appear insurmountable remind me that I serve an extraordinary God who does not rely on natural solutions but works in the supernatural realm to meet every one of my needs. I seek to remain firmly grounded in the living hope of our resurrected Savior, for it is in His name that I pray. Amen.

Update on Ester: Thank you for praying for Ester's healing, for guidance from her congenital heart disease doctor, Dr. Chaudry, and other specialists who continue to order testing as to why her chest continues to hurt, her oxygen level has dropped to the low 80's, and why her physical weariness continues to sap her of any energy. She remains in the hospital as they explore her symptoms and are having a conversation with the cardiology team about a possible catheterization. Her last one was about 13 years ago when she had coil embolization where they placed coils to stop bleeding or abnormal blood flow within an artery. She was nicknamed the "Coil Queen" in the lab due to the many they inserted. Dr. Weber (no relation), her cardiologist at the time, discovered that she has pulmonary hypertension as well during this cath. So, Ester continues to be an overcomer by the grace of God, and she is encouraged by those who take her to the Lord in prayer.

In regard to yesterday's message on grief Nigel, a longtime friend, sent this insightful quote: "What is grief, if not love persevering?"

Rhubarb

Rhubarb! We have rhubarb grown on a neighbor's farm. He gives us the portion unsuitable for market due to appearance, not quality, and we have way too much. Any local readers who would like some rhubarb give us a call if you are willing to drive out to our place to get it. He told us he will have more today.  Send a message to Stephen & Brooksyne

Finally today:

Today is a special day for us as we are celebrating our 49th wedding anniversary. I guess this will come as no surprise to any of our longtime readers who have seen the aging process through the photos we feature and the activities we speak of in our personal lives!

We both committed our lives to Jesus in our teens and have sought to serve the Lord together in ministry since meeting in Bible College. In fact, apart from some of our childhood friends, there are few who know us apart from being a couple. We started dating early in college and just after our junior year in 1976 we began pastoring local churches together for the next 25 years (actually about 30 years if we include our interim pastoral service). Since 2001 we have worked as chaplains together and in interim pastoral work. These messages are a joint effort. I provide the exposition and theological foundation, the initial writing and the tech support. Brooksyne corrects my spelling and grammar, adds adjectives to make our messages more colorful and makes clarification when needed to my writing. We are indeed a team when it comes to the dailyencouragement ministry.

For any who may be interested here are some photos we have shared before on our anniversary that includes some photos of our wedding. These are not new photos since we didn't take nearly as many photos in those days. We have also told these stories in the past.

Our engagement photo

Our engagement photo was taken at Central Bible College where we met our Freshmen year of college in 1973. Our first date was on Brooksyne's 18th birthday on October 21, 1973 when I invited her to church on a Sunday evening. At that time local churches sent buses to the campus to pick up students. As we waited on the bus, her old boyfriend and his mom showed up from Tulsa, (180 miles from campus)! Brooksyne was extremely surprised and embarrassed, but felt she must meet with them and jumped off the bus leaving me to go to church by myself on our very first date! We started dating again three months later. Brooksyne's note: I had broken off with my old boyfriend before I left for college, but I guess his mother thought a surprise visit on my birthday would patch things up, but fortunately (for me) it didn't. Stephen and I started going steady in early 1974, got engaged in the fall of 1975, married in the spring of '76.

Our wedding photo
Here we are walking down the church aisle as a newly married couple on May 8, 1976 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. The wedding was held in the church where Brooksyne led Children's Church over the summer months when she wasn't attending CBC. (In the front right pew is Stephen's parents, with his mom turned around, watching us leave the sanctuary.)

Harding at wedding
This photo means a lot to me. I am introducing Brooksyne to Joe and Pauline Harding who had driven down from the Kansas City area to attend our wedding. Joe was my Sunday School teacher in my early teens when I was smart-mouthed, disrespectful and uninterested. I surely gave him lots of heartache. I have written about his impact on my life here.

David Simpson at our wedding
David Simpson (shaking my hand) was the best man in our wedding. We have been friends since 1st grade and still maintain that friendship after almost 65 years. Dave had a very successful business career in Springfield, MO. My brother, Pat, in the background, conducted our wedding ceremony. Look at all that hair!

Back in our day it wasn't the custom to rent a limo but rather "decorate" the newly married couple's car with shaving cream, cans tied to the back, etc. Well, instead of decorating our car they decorated Dave's mistakenly! It was also not the custom to have a full meal reception after the wedding. Dave wanted to take us out so, on our way out of town, we drove over to the Casa Bonita Mexican restaurant in Tulsa. Dave was all by himself in his decorated car. I'm sure people were wondering where is the groom going without his bride!

Phillip Bongiorno

I was ordained on May 8, 1979 at a service in York PA. That was many years before the proliferation of having photos of everything. I have long looked for a photo of me with Phillip Bongiorno, my district superintendent at that time, but have never been able to find it. I was just 24 so I probably didn't look that much different than my wedding photo!

Pastor Bongiorno, prior to his conversion to Christ, had some mafia associations. He would often begin any message he preached with a brief testimony and inevitably wept as he shared it.

Standing in a long line with other ordinands, as I held my Bible and faced the congregation in 1979, the solemn ceremony and the solemn vows I took as a minister of the gospel has become a lasting memorable experience. Pastor Bongiorno didn't rush through the Scripture reading but carefully enunciated each phrase and sometimes a single word, pausing at times to let the thoughts sink in.

"I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: preach the Word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry" (2 Timothy 4:1-5).

Above is a photo with Brother Bongiorno from a minister's picnic about seven years ago. He is now in his late 80's (perhaps early 90's) and still doing well.
