This house on Front Street in Marietta, PA faces the Susquehanna River, although the view is blocked by the trees beside the railroad tracks. Many homes along this street are over 200 years old and it is a National Historic District.

"Atheist Day"

Message summary: Today, as is true everyday, it's a good time to affirm our faith in God, our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend!"

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God'" (Psalm 14:1). "Claiming to be wise, they became fools" (Romans 1:22).

We saw a bumper sticker that proclaimed "April 1, National Atheist's Day". I was annoyed, but not necessarily surprised, that there would be a day designated as such. I was so curious I carefully moved my car closer to the car sticker and read the small print with this small text beside it: Psalm 14:1.

It was actually a witness for the Lord! It was referring to the first daily verse (Psalm 14:1). It was then that I made the connection, O yeah, Fool's Day is April 1!

Now certainly there is and, at least since the time of David, has been a relatively small segment of the population that is avowedly atheist. Most just ignore God without claiming to be atheist.

In my opinion atheism requires a great deal of faith! In fact there is a book titled " I Don't Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist" by Norman Geisler and Frank Turek.

In regard to Psalm 14:1 Bible teacher David Guzik points out, "The idea behind this ancient Hebrew word translated 'fool' is more moral than intellectual. David did not have in mind those not smart enough to figure God out (no one is that smart); he had in mind those who simply reject God."

In Romans 1:22 there is a stunning indictment of those who claim to be wise, "Claiming to be wise, they became fools". This is in a context of God's revelation through creation.

"For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For His invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks to Him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened" (Romans 1:19-21).

Creation reveals the fact that there is a God; whereas the fool says in his heart, "There is no God". It's a denial in spite of overwhelming evidence. This would be like a man who is given a tour of the world's greatest computer and then says, "No one made this computer. It just happened to pop into existence!" What a fool! (from the teaching site of Middletown Bible Church, Middletown Connecticut)

Today, as is true every day, it's a good time to affirm our faith in God, our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend!"* Don't be a fool!

Be encouraged today! Hebrews 3:13

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, Your inspired Word reveals to me Your invisible attributes, namely Your eternal power and divine nature that are essential to all things living.  I am without excuse if I choose not to honor You or acknowledge You as the living God, Creator of heaven and earth. Thank You for Jesus, Redeemer of my soul, who died, was buried for three days and rose again to new life. Rather than have my heart darkened by denying or rejecting Your redemptive plan, I choose to push through the darkness and receive new life through Jesus, our resurrected Lord and Savior, who grants us forgiveness and abundant life here on our earthly journey, and everlasting life in our future eternal home. Amen.

* the phrase "Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend" comes from this song.

Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail,
in You do we trust, nor find You to fail.
Your mercies, how tender, how firm to the end,
our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend!

Several photos from a bike ride yesterday along the Susquehanna River.

House in Marietta, PA
Another house on Front Street in Marietta, PA but this one appears to have been built more recently. I had driven off the trail through Marietta to check on the cherry trees along Front Street but they are not yet in bloom.

Railroad bridge over Susquehanna River
Shocks Mill railroad bridge over the Susquehanna River was opened on January 1, 1905 and is still used regularly with long freight trains. During high waters the trail section under the bridge floods and the trail has to be closed at this point.

Goose couple on river trail
This goose couple was on the trail both going up the river trail and about an hour later when I came back down. There must surely be a nest nearby. They're accustomed to human traffic and let me get very close.

Finally today:

Mini grow light
Brooksyne started growing seeds five days ago. This mini greenhouse came with a grow light which sped up the germination of these poppies that are supposed to pop up after 14-21 days. These are just 5 days old!
