"Christus Victor Amen"
Message summary: Today we encourage each reader to keep their focus on the victorious Christ. "The things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace!"

told you these
things so that
in Me you may
have peace.
You will have
suffering in
this world. Be
courageous! I
have conquered
the world"
(John 16:33).
"But thanks be
to God, who
gives us the
victory
through our
Lord Jesus
Christ" (1
Corinthians
15:57).
Yesterday
our choir sang
a newer anthem
type song
titled,
"Christus
Victor
(Amen)". "Christus
Victor" is
Latin for
"Christ the
Victor". We'll
post a link
below if you
care to
listen.
O
Most High,
King of the
nations
Robed in
praise,
crowned with
splendor
On that day,
who will not
tremble
When You
stand, Christ
the Victor
Who was, and
is, and is
forever
What a tremendous truth that Christ is Victor! The two texts selected today support this claim. Although the specific word varies slightly depending on translation each translates a Greek word νῖκος (nikos) which refers to the concept of victory or triumph.
John
16:33 has long
been among our
favorite
verses and we
both memorized
it in Bible
College.
Typically when
considering
this verse my
focus has been
on the first
part about
peace but
Christ's
self-declarative
phrase is
essential, "I
have conquered
the world".
Other versions
use "overcome"
but they all
translate the
word
derived from νῖκοςνῖκος.
This was
before His
ultimate
victory on the
cross. Being
God He was and
is always
victorious.
David
Guzik writes,
"This was an
amazing
statement from
a man about to
be arrested,
forsaken,
rejected,
mocked,
tortured and
executed.
Knowing that
Jesus has
overcome the
world brings
us good cheer
(courageous).
It is the
foundation for
our peace in
Him. We see
that Jesus is
in control, we
see that
although He
leaves He does
not abandon,
we see that He
loves, and we
see that the
victory is
His. We can be
of good cheer
indeed."
Because
Christ is
Victor, we can
have the
assurance that
Paul ends his
marvelous
chapter on the
resurrection
theme with
this
declaration of
praise, "But
thanks be to
God, who gives
us the victory
through our
Lord Jesus
Christ" (1
Corinthians
15:57). His
victory is our
victory.
The present
tense
(continually
giving) so it
is not "God
gave us the
victory" but
"God Who keeps
on giving us
the
victory!"
This is
good news for
it emphasizes
the certainty
of the victory.
Today
we encourage
each reader to
focus on our
victorious
Christ. In
doing so "the
things of
earth will
grow strangely
dim, in the
light of His
glory and
grace!"

prayer:
Father, we
give thanks to
You who gives
us the victory
through Christ
Jesus our Lord
who was
betrayed,
arrested,
forsaken,
rejected,
mocked,
tortured and
executed that
we might have
forgiveness of
our sins. We
would die in
our sins and
bear the
penalty of
eternal
damnation in
hell, but
because Jesus
died for us
and rose
again, He is
the great
Victor. His
victory is our
victory, here
and now and
also in the
eternal life
we receive as
we enter the
gates of
heaven. Praise
be to God for
His wonderful
gifts to us.
