1 Timothy 6:11

"Flee And Follow"

Message summary: A simple outline for all ages: flee and follow. Today let us determine that we will flee from the wickedness of this world and follow after the righteousness of God’s Kingdom.

Listen to our message on your audio player.

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” (Matthew 5:6). “But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness” (1 Timothy 6:11). “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21).

Yesterday we visited with my brother and his wife and attended their church in the Lehigh Valley about 100 miles northeast of us. It was Ester's birthday and her request was to see her Uncle Pat and family. Along the way we drove though Reading PA, which is pronounced Redding (although we bypassed the main city).

When driving through this area I often recall one of the most graphic "truth in advertising" illustrations I've ever seen: a huge billboard coming into Reading which advertised some type of men's club. It showed a photo of one of the women (actually giving her a name) and announced, "really, really wicked".

Such is what so many in the world hunger and thirst for but Jesus said, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” (Matthew 5:6). We, as followers of Christ, are called to flee and overcome evil and daily seek to live for God, hungering and thirsting after His righteousness.

The Bible says, “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil” (Isaiah 5:20). Among the signs of a culture’s moral decay and downfall is a failure to uphold the Creator’s standards. This leads to great confusion as to what even constitutes evil. That’s just where we are right now.

We are being flooded with perversions and there is much confusion regarding what is good and what is evil. Evil is being called good and good is being called evil. In man’s “wisdom”, the holy standards of God’s Word are often mocked. But here is God’s assessment of fallen man's wisdom, “Professing to be wise, they became fools” (Romans 1:22).

Paul wrote to Timothy,
“But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness” (1 Timothy 6:11)."But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness" (1 Timothy 6:11).

This provides a simple outline for all ages: flee and follow. Today let us determine that we will flee from the wickedness of this world and follow after the righteousness of God’s Kingdom.

Be encouraged today! Hebrews 3:13

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, help me to remember that my character reflects that which I follow daily. When I reflect that which is good it's because I'm following after the Kingdom of God which is full of righteousness, peace, and joy. Help me to diligently exercise the gift of discernment so that I will quickly recognize the kingdom of darkness which is full of evil, deceit, and chaos. Because of Your Holy Spirit abiding in my life I know that Your good in me is greater than the evil that is in the world! By Your grace I will overcome the destructive forces of evil as I am in daily communion with You! I pray this in the loving and holy name of Jesus. Amen.

Ester with Pat and Laverne on 36th birthday
Ester enjoyed being with her Aunt and Uncle yesterday as we celebrated her 36th birthday over lunch. She got a very good report at her six month cardiac check-up on Friday. When she went to work at Goodwill last August her new job required a lot of walking in the store due to loading rack displays, returning merchandise to proper locations, etc. She showed the doctor her steps for that day which were 9000 (from only 5 hours of work). The doctor was very impressed and indicated that the results from a stress test she took last fall is in the top 25% percentile for patients with the same health history that she has. We give thanks to God for the amazing work He has done in her life.

Weber brothers
Three Weber brothers. (one brother from another mother)
Clarence Weber is from Panama but has lived in the states since he was child. He sat in front of us in church yesterday where we visited my brother's family in Easton. Afterwards we got acquainted and Pat (my brother) was quick to let us know he's a Weber as well.

Electric fireplace
We shared last Friday that we had parted with our coal stove we used over the last 23 years. I was at Lowe's Friday afternoon and picked up this electric fireplace. It was a floor display on clearance so I didn't have to put it together. It doesn't put out nearly as much heat as the coal stove but fits nicely in the spot left vacant by the coal stove. It was very hard to adjust the heat in the coal stove and the room was often too hot, especially when temps rose quickly outside. This unit has a remote and we can opt only for the flame look or turn on heat as needed.
