Allis Chalmer tractor
We saw this Allis-Chalmers tractor on Elizabethtown Road yesterday morning. It's the same make my Uncle Gentry had on his farm in southern Missouri and probably the first tractor I ever drove.

"Thoroughly Tested Promises"

Message summary: Today, as you hold onto God's thoroughly tested promises, may your heart be filled with a song of praise.

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"Then they believed His promises and sang His praise" (Psalm 106:12). "Your promises have been thoroughly tested, and your servant loves them" (Psalm 119:140).

God of Abraham
You're the God of covenant
And of faithful promises
Time and time again
You have proven
You’ll do just what You said

A promise is a commitment by someone to do or not do something. Our most solemn human to human promise is our marriage vows. But we make many other promises in life. One who keeps his or her promises is greatly valued and respected.

In our first daily text the Israelites broke into song as a result of seeing God's promises fulfilled, "they believed His promises and sang His praise".  In our devotional message today we want to provide those with troubled hearts a song of hope as we consider the greatest Promise-keeper.

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible and virtually every verse extols some aspect of God's Word. The Psalmist David seems to be in a crescendo of deep appreciation for God's Word and yet the "Bible" he had was only the first five books of our present Bible, perhaps along with some of the historical books (hardly listed among our favorite sources of promises!)

"Your promises have been thoroughly tested". Dr. Herbert Lockyer's classic book titled "All the Promises In The Bible" lists over 8,000 promises. These promises are definite, explicit declarations God has made that we can rely on.  His promises are indeed "thoroughly tested". The actual Hebrew words convey a poker constantly in the fire in the refining process of gold. The Amplified Bible states, "tried and well refined".

Consider how these promises that David reckoned as "thoroughly tested" have existed an additional three thousand years! And now we have the entire Bible as a source of revelation from God and a great mine from which to glean His promises. Late in the New Testament Peter writes of God's "exceeding great and precious promises" (2 Peter 1:4). We are greatly blessed aren't we!

"Your servant loves them". The Psalmist continues by expressing his attitude toward God's thoroughly tested promises. Believing friend, you can depend on God's promises regardless of the seeming hopelessness of any situation you may face. His promises have been thoroughly tested again and again. May God give each of us a great love for them and increase our faith as we see them fulfilled in our present age. Let us all hold out for the promises not yet fulfilled.

The late Bible teacher James Montgomery Boice wrote,

"The God of the Bible is not weak; He is strong. He is all-mighty. Nothing happens without His permission or apart from His purposes -- even evil. Nothing disturbs or puzzles Him. His purposes are always accomplished. Therefore those who know Him rightly act with boldness, assured that God is with them to accomplish His own desirable purposes in their lives."

Today as you hold onto His thoroughly tested promises may your heart be filled with a song of praise.

Even now, You keep Your promise
Even now, Your heart is kindness
In the dark, I shall not fear
For You are on my side in battle,
God my Strength, My Shield forever
Where my hope is found, I will praise You even now

Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, help us to meditate upon Your promises so that our faith is increased and our hope is renewed. When obstacles cloud our view that discourage or sway our trust in You, knowing and meditating on Your thoroughly tested promises help us to look beyond the natural and trust You for the supernatural. We know, by experience and by looking at Scripture that You work in mysterious ways, Your wonders to perform. Amen.

Yesterday following a chaplain visit we rode our bikes through Swatara State Park in northern Lebanon County and ate lunch in Bordner's cabin overlooking Acrigg's Falls.

Curious pigs
On the way up we passed this interesting place with some curious pigs!

Moonshine Church
Interesting name for a church! Someday I want to write a message about church names. Actually this rural settlement and church is named after a Henry Moonshine. However the property does have some history: The Blue Eyed Six Murder and the Haunting of Moonshine Church

Swatara Rail Trail
The Swatara Rail Trail still had some foliage but there were layers of fallen leaves on the trail.

Bordner Cabin
We have mentioned the Bordner Cabin many times through the years. It was built by a high school shop teacher in the 1930's but is now abandoned and part of the state park. On the other side is a waterfall. We often eat our lunch in the cabin at the large picnic table and listen to the roar of the falls just outside the large window. It was the first time we ate with no background ambience noise due to the water shortage. We had to look to the very top of Acrigg's Falls to see even a trickle of water tumbling down the rocks. Here's a site with many photos.

Appalachian Trail hikers
We visited with several Appalachian Trail hikers crossing the bridge over Swatara Creek which is part of the trail. One was finishing his Pennsylvania portion while a couple had started in Maine and were headed to Georgia. However they told me part of the trail was closed through North Carolina due to the extreme flooding. But it will be awhile before they get there!
