Colossians 1:15-17

"Holding All Things Together"

Message summary: He who holds all things together will surely uphold and sustain you. He is ever dependable.

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"And this is the plan: At the right time He will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth" (Ephesians 1:10). "The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together" (Colossians 1:15-17). "The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word" (Hebrews 1:3).

Ephesians 1:10Years ago we saw a woman wearing a sign on her back as she was standing in line: "Everything is NOT falling apart, Everything is FALLING INTO PLACE". Isn't that a great reminder, especially for these times?

The daily Scriptures are several powerful portions extolling the supremacy of Christ. Our first verse, Ephesians 1:10, reminds us that God has a plan that cannot be thwarted. "And this is the plan: At the right time He will bring everything together under the authority of Christ—everything in heaven and on earth" (Ephesians 1:10).

1) God has a plan
2) Everything in heaven and on earth will be brought together. Note that everything is used twice for emphasis
3) Under the authority of Christ

Colossians 1:16,17 states "For by Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together". Note the four times in these two verses we read the words "all things".

But today let us focus on just the phrase, "in Him all things hold together". The God who holds all things together in the universe is also sustaining each one of us. He speaks through the prophet Isaiah to the ancient people of God and thus through the Scriptures to all of us: "Listen to me, O house of Jacob, all you who remain of the house of Israel, you whom I have upheld since you were conceived, and have carried since your birth" (Isaiah 46:3).*

Rest in the wonderful assurance that we don't have to be self-sustaining and our sustaining does not depend on the vacillating events around us. Instead we raise our eyes heavenward and declare, "You are sustaining all things by Your powerful Word and You will accomplish what concerns me for You are my Sustainer; Your lovingkindness, O LORD, is everlasting" (Hebrews 1:3, Psalm 138:8).

So here's the word of encouragement today, fellow believer. He who holds all things together will surely uphold and sustain you. He is ever dependable. Troubles and fears that weigh you down today are under His absolute authority and, as they run their course, Jesus calls us to trust Him – yes, even in the midst of them. Let's take Him at His Word since He is wholly dependable! So consider this one additional reference to "all things" many of us have long memorized, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose" (Romans 8:28).

Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, You are before all things and You hold all things together. Without Your sovereign power at work, in the universe and in our lives, we would be without hope and without existence. I'm so thankful that You delight in Your creation, You even rejoice over us with singing. You sustain all things by Your powerful Word and You accomplish that which concerns me, for You are my Great Sustainer. Thank You faithful, holy and righteous One. Amen.

* "you whom I have upheld since you were conceived" What a powerful truth concerning the value of life beginning at conception expressed long before we had the biological knowledge as humans to understand life begins at conception. One can get a jail term for destroying unborn eagles (their eggs) but many defend and even celebrate the slaughter of unborn children. This is what happens when mankind forsakes God.

Horses along Trout Run Road
The colorful foliage enhances this setting of horses along Trout Run Road that runs adjacent to Kraybill Church Road. However, anyone who has a vinyl fence (or in our case also porch railing) has to put up with the unsightly algae! We continue to have outstanding weather and hope to get some more bike rides in this fall. This morning it's already 67 degrees and a high today of 80!
