"Not A Time For Silence"

Message summary:  Ecclesiastes 3:7 wisely states that there is "A time to be silent and a time to speak". Elijah's bold call for a decision was not a time for silence!

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"But the people said nothing" (1 Kings 18:21). "A time to be silent and a time to speak" (Ecclesiastes 3:7). "Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them" (Ephesians 5:11).

Erwin LutzerBible teacher Erwin Lutzer is the pastor emeritus of the Moody Church in Chicago, where he served as senior pastor from 1980-2016. He is a prolific writer and we have read several of his books. Years ago I met him at a conference in Washington.

One of his more recent books has the challenging title, "We Will Not Be Silenced: Responding with Courage to Our Culture's Assault on Christianity". He urges Christians and churches to boldly confront the evils of our age. Being silent for the wrong reasons is a great peril.

Today we continue to examine a single verse in 1 Kings 18:21 as we have in the last two messages. Here's the entire verse again: "Elijah went before the people and said, 'How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him'. But the people said nothing."

In this dramatic confrontation Elijah addressed those who wavered in their allegiance.
He asked a probing question, "How long will you waver between two opinions?" and then followed up with this prophetic challenge, 'If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him'".

Today let us examine the people's pathetic response summed up in just five words, "But the people said nothing". This was not a time for silence. Sometimes silence speaks louder than words. The right response was repentance and a bold declaration, "The Lord is my God".

Perhaps they thought by committing to neither position they would appease both. So many today are like the people who, when confronted with Elijah's unabashed choice, "said nothing". That sounds like the rampant pluralism of our day. And, tragically, it sounds like many in the visible church.

James Bridges wrote, "The enemies of the gospel will do everything possible to frighten the church into silence".

Ecclesiastes 3:7 wisely states there is "A time to be silent and a time to speak". Elijah's bold call for a decision was not a time for silence!

In our third daily verse the Apostle Paul makes a very unambiguous statement: "Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them". This is a call desperately needed in our culture and increasingly so in the Church. We are subjected to ridicule and/or persecution when we obey this command by those who "love the darkness rather than the light" (John 3:19). In fact the world wants to silence those who speak out for truth exposing darkness through the Light of His Word.

Blogger Chelsen Vicari writes,

"Remember that Christ was criticized and crucified by the popular culture of His day. Don’t give up. Don’t get discouraged. Don’t get burned out. And don’t be silent. Silence does not spread justice nor truth. Never lose your compassion, but never ever abandon your convictions!"

Let us determine that we will declare "the Lord is God" and follow Him.

Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, we won't abandon our convictions nor lose our compassion when we follow You without reservation, compromise, or fear. We follow You and seek no other master. We do not want to be silent about Your work in our lives, but we want to provide a Biblical answer to all who ask about the hope that we have, and we want to do this with compassion, gentleness, and respect so that those who might find fault with the messenger will focus their attention on the message we share about You, our Master, Creator, and Redeemer! We will not be deterred from speaking up though our message may be unpopular or fall upon unreceptive hearts, for we choose to follow You with our lives, with our voice, and with obedient hearts. Amen.

See I Peter 3:14-18

"We Will Not Be Silenced: Responding with Courage to Our Culture's Assault on Christianity". (Erwin Lutzer's book referenced in the message)

Chelsen Vicari is a young Bible-faithful millennial. Here's the post with the quote above. Never Compromise Convictions According to Tide of Popular Culture

"Hearts of Fire" is a book about eight women in the underground church and their stories of costly faith compiled by Voice of the Martyrs. Each of the eight stories is riveting. These women, one as young as twelve, take a stand for Christ. It will cost them their families, their standing in the community, and separate them from their spouses and children. They will face imprisonment, be thrown into refugee camps, see loved ones slain before their very eyes, and on and on the hardships and terrors unfold in this hard to read book. But the beauty within their lives, the determination to be faithful to God in the midst of such horrors speaks to us, especially as we consider the charge put forth by Elijah, "If the Lord is God, follow Him..." These women would not be silenced as their faith was unwavering and their commitment undeterred under the most brutal of circumstances.

Here in Lancaster County this weekend we have Faithful Give. This is a cooperative giving opportunity for a wide variety of Christian ministries and the result of some courageous Christians taking a stand against unrighteousness.

For many years we had a county-wide giving opportunity that included all types of organizations, Christian and non-Christian. It also included several organizations like Planned Parenthood, LGBT groups, etc. that we would never support. But you were able to choose what you wanted to give to. It was a good example of toleration. Then the LGBT groups demanded that all groups in the program abandon their beliefs on morality so as not to be what they considered "discriminatory" in order to remain in the program. (So much for toleration!) And sadly the program organizers caved. This resulted in the formation of "Faithful Give".

Eve's Garden table
Eve's Garden is an interesting greenhouse along Blue Rock Road. I (Brooksyne) especially enjoy due to the variety of plants as well as the gift shop operated in a barn like setting. Eva, the owner, has a real gift for not only beautiful flowers and plants but also sells home decor items.

This table is set up under a tent-like structure and reminded us that Succot for the Jews has begun. Many orthodox Jews will converge upon the Old Windmill Farm during this time. Last year I shared a post about this Jewish holiday titled "A Lesson From Succot" with lots of photos. This was just two days before the horrific attack on Israel by the Hamas Muslim terrorists on October 7, 2023.

Eve's Garden planter
A corner planter at Eve's Garden that probably once had a utilitarian purpose on the farm; I'm guessing some type of animal feeder. Perhaps a sharp farmer could clarify this for us!

Super moon
The full super moon from the side of our home last night, a Super Hunter's Moon and the closest full super moon for 2024.
