"Three Score Years And Ten"

Message summary:  Each of our lives are a part of the overall fulfillment of God’s purpose in His Kingdom.

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away" (Psalm 90:10). "I cry out to God Most High, to God, who fulfills His purpose for me” (Psalm 57:2). “When David had served God’s purpose in his own generation he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed” (Acts 13:36).

Today I (Stephen) reached the milestone of being "three score years and ten". We don’t often reckon years that way so I may have a few guessing my age. Probably the most famous reference to this type of measurement is in Lincoln’s Gettysburg address when he said “four score and seven”. He was stating the number of years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence at the time he spoke (87 years in 1863).

Allen C. Guelzo, the director of Civil War Era studies at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania, suggested that Lincoln’s formulation “four score and seven” was an allusion to the King James Version of the Bible’s Psalm 90:10, in which man’s lifespan is given as “threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years".

In case my age is not clear I am 25,569 days old. (Psalm 90:12)

Each of our lives are a part of the overall fulfillment of God’s purpose in His Kingdom. Psalm 57 was written during a very low period in David’s life. David cried out to the Lord and expressed confidence that ultimately God's purpose would be fulfilled in his life.

In the historical books we have a lot of information on David. Apart from Moses, we may have more biographical information on David than any other Old Testament personality.

But the apostle Paul, preaching in a Jewish synagogue in Pisidian Antioch, makes a simple statement concerning David’s life, essentially a summation, "When David had served God’s purpose in his own generation".

God places each of us on this earth for a season, a period of time known as our “own generation” or our life span. The amount of time we have varies: some die young, others in their middle ages and yet others at a “ripe old age”, one of the most colorful descriptions of age in the Scriptures! (See Genesis 25:8.)

Like David, all of us (except the final generation) will eventually fall asleep (die) and our physical bodies will decay. Interestingly, Psalm 90:10 ends with these words regarding our life span, "they are soon gone, and we fly away".

God knows what is good for us better than we ourselves know. Let us not make the mistake of judging God’s overall plan for our lives by that portion which may be our current experience. The daily text states, "their span is but toil and trouble". God has all eternity in which to bring His plans to fulfillment for our lives. Think not in terms of today, but in terms of eternity. After all, that’s where we’ll spend most of our existence.

We can live for self or in consecration to God’s purpose. Many have heard the quote, “Only one life will soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last". Today, let us, like David, choose to be a vessel used for God’s purpose in our generation! I ask you, how are you impacting others for Christ and eternity?

Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, we’re grateful for those throughout history who chose to be men and women of faith, whose hearts were fashioned in Your image, for those who served Your purpose in their generation. We also want to serve Your purpose in our generation. Help us to remain steadfast and strong all the days of our lives. Amen.

We had a busy weekend:

Align Life Banquet
Friday evening we attended a banquet for Align Life Ministries, our local pregnancy resource center. There were 750 in attendance to hear of the ministry of Align Life and keynote speaker, Eric Mataxas, who stressed the vital importance of the Church as a counter force to the evil of our age.

Align Life Banquet Daryl Leisey
One of the very first people I met moving to Lancaster County in 2001 was Daryl Leisey, who was the MC at the event. Daryl has been on the board of Align Life for many years. He is a business consultant with North Group Consultants and at a point of difficult transition in my life in 2005 he gave me valuable and lasting counsel.

Old Windmill Farm farmhouse experience
On Saturday I met my brother Pat over at the Old Windmill Farm before we went out to lunch together. In this photo Jesse is hosting a farmhouse experience where guests make butter, cider and enjoy freshly baked homemade bread. Anna Ruth made sure I got a loaf to take home. Just before I wrote this caption I inserted a slice of bread in the toaster. The aroma of fresh bread filled the kitchen. It tasted as good as it smelled!

Brooksyne's note: Saturday evening Ester and Brooksyne planned a surprise 70th birthday party with our ABF class along with some friends we've collected over the years. Bob and Robin, members of our class hosted it at their dairy farm in Washington Boro. We'll post more photos tomorrow when Ester downloads them from her camera.

Mark Dubbeld Family
Last night we attended a Gospel Concert to hear the Mark Dubbeld Family from Virginia. Our friends, Nick and Drema, invited us and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Janeen (r) wrote a book about her adoption "In a Cardboard Box" that Brooksyne is currently reading. How wonderful that Janeen found her purpose for living in spite of the difficult circumstances of her birth.

Here are two of my favorite songs from last night:
