Bass Pro Shop Memphis
During a long trip we try to break it up with some stops along the way. This is the Bass Pro Shop store in Memphis Tennessee built in a repurposed basketball arena. You can take an elevator to the top for views of the city and surrounding area which I did and enjoyed a view of the city I wouldn't have seen otherwise.

"The Blessing Of Music"

Message summary: Music is a great aid in remembering and transmitting spiritual truths. It's hard for me to admit this as a preacher but I suspect it's likely that the congregation often remembered the music sung in our church services more than the sermons I preached, hard as I worked on my preparation, and I know Brooksyne would say Amen to that which I just admitted!

"Then Moses and the sons of Israel sang this song to the Lord, and said, 'I will sing to the Lord, for He is highly exalted; The horse and its rider He has hurled into the sea. The Lord is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation; This is my God, and I will praise Him; My father’s God, and I will extol Him'" (Exodus 15:1,2). "Miriam the prophetess, Aaron’s sister, took the timbrel in her hand, and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dancing. Miriam answered them, 'Sing to the Lord, for He is highly exalted; The horse and his rider He has hurled into the sea'" (Exodus 15:20,21).

Sunday afternoon right through the late evening evening hour a group of ten young adults visited our home. They attend a weekly ABF class Ester associates with and like most young singles they just enjoy getting together with friends and hanging out. We remember those days though we were quite a bit younger! It seems that many young people wait until their thirties or later to get married and some remain single.

One young lady eyed Brooksyne's piano and wanted to play since she hadn't done so for a long time. Several gathered in a group around the piano and sang "old" songs, the kind that many of them sang in churches as they grew up: "I Come to the Garden", "What a Friend" and other such hymns.

Music is a great aid in remembering and transmitting spiritual truths. It's hard for me to admit this as a preacher but I suspect it's likely that the congregation often remembered the music sung in our church services more than the sermons I preached, hard as I worked on my preparation! And I'm sure Brooksyne would say Amen to what I just admitted.

After the crossing of the Red Sea Moses and the sons of Israel sang a song celebrating their victory. This is the first worship song in the Bible and it not only sings praises to God but also reinforces the history that just took place. We, of course, don't know the original tune but we recall a chorus based on the first several verses we often sang many years ago during the years of Scripture Songs.

The song, recorded in 18 Scripture verses, mixes praise to God with a reminder of the great deliverance the people had just experienced and points to His help in what was to lie ahead. It's a song to remind the Israelites that our trust is not in the power, might and strength of man, but our trust is in the mighty name of the Lord God, conqueror of any foe that seeks to destroy us. What an incredibly current concept for Israel today.

Some 1,500 years after this miraculous deliverance John had a vision of heaven and we find this song mentioned again. "And they sang the song of Moses, the bond-servant of God, and the song of the Lamb" (Revelation 15:3). The song of Moses is generally considered to be today's portion of Scripture so this would make today's portion not only the oldest recorded praise song but a song still sung in heaven!

A key verse in what sounds like part of the Psalms states,

The Lord is my strength and song,
And He has become my salvation;
This is my God, and I will praise Him;
My father is God, and I will exalt Him.

That's a timeless truth we can each musically declare today as we consider how so much music: ancient, prior to our age, and modern has these themes.

It is good to praise the Lord
and make music to Your name, O Most High,
proclaiming Your love in the morning
and Your faithfulness at night.
(Psalm 92:2)

Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, many of our praises and words of thanksgiving, prayers and petitions we musically present to You. Whether our hearts overflow with joy and thanksgiving or fill up with pain and sorrow, praise songs of rejoicing or songs written during one's anguish begin to minister to our innermost needs. I'm so thankful that You, our loving Father, quiet us with Your love and rejoice over us with singing. The Psalmist declares that it is good for us to praise You, our Father, and to make music to Your name, O Most High. We are to proclaim Your love in the morning and Your faithfulness at night. Your presence awaits us in the early morning dawn and at the close of each day, for which we are eternally grateful. Amen.

Here's another great verse: "The Lord Your God is with You. He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in You, He will quiet You with His love, He will rejoice over You with singing" (Zephaniah 3:17).

Our ministry in daily encouragement is  written to primarily those who have placed their faith in Christ but we know there are those who come across these messages who may not know or understand the plan of salvation. Today's Suggested Music and Supplemental Resources

"Bless God"  Watch on YouTube  Brooke Ligertwood // Acoustic Performance

Today we share a final set of misc photos from our road trip we returned from last week.

Bike trail in Kingsport TN
During the trip we took several bike rides along rail/recreational trails in Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. I (Stephen) rode some 150 miles total. This trail is in Kingsport TN.

Paula Deen meal
We had lots of good food during our trip but our most memorable meal was at a Paula Deen's Family Kitchen near The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. They serve the meal family style that you take off the serving plate like a family meal at home. All the above was for two people as well as cheese biscuits and a dessert each (we each chose banana pudding) which we carried out to eat later. The food was delicious and we were more than full as we left.

Bass Pro Shop Memphis inside elevator
Here's the elevator at the center of the Bass Pro Shop in Memphis. Bass Pro Shops was started in Springfield MO around the time we were attending college in that same town. Johnny Morris started it in a package store his father owned. After finishing college he asked his dad if he could set up a display for fishing gear in the back of the store. His dad was angered that, after sending him to college, he had no more ambition than that but as far as worldly wealth it turned out pretty good for him as he is now a multi-billionaire. As I rode up the elevator they told how the Memphis pyramid became a Bass Pro Shop.

Miller Pecan Company
On the way back we saw a sign for the Miller Pecan Company in northeast Oklahoma so we stopped and purchased several bags of the tastiest pecans we've ever eaten, rivaling the oil rich pecans my Uncle Gentry would give us from Vernon County MO. And the big plus is that their prices were very reasonable!

Precious Moments Chapel
We stopped by the Precious Moments Chapel near Carthage, MO. This was a booming place in the 80's and 90's when the huge parking lot had lots of cars and even tour buses. It was roughly 1/2 way between the Kansas City area and Tulsa and several times we met our folks there. Now, like the Longaberger Baskets in Ohio, it feels like a has been but it's still open and there are still some visitors who tour the beautiful site.
