Sunset Grocery sign
Yesterday we were greeted by this edifying sign walking into Sunset Grocery Store in rural Lebanon County. After reading the Scripture verse hopefully customers were incentivized to be more fruitful in their love for one another. Perhaps they purchased some fruit as well: fruit for the soul and fruit for the body!

"Wonder Transport"

Message summary: Let us all make every effort to clothe ourselves in humility!

“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31).

Like most churches these days most of the songs we sing were recently written, the newer the better it seems. And to be sure we are blessed by many of the new songs. Last Sunday we sang a hymn written around 1872, but nevertheless sung with great fervor, probably in part due to the familiarity for us older folks. "To God Be The Glory" was written by Fanny Crosby who wrote many hymns that have blessed millions.

Whenever I (Stephen) sing the song I recall a testimony I heard many years ago at a CBMC (Christian Businessmen) meeting when the owner of a trucking company shared about coming to faith and how it changed his life.

He shared how there were many who planted seeds in his life years before he made the decision to turn his life over to Christ. After his conversion he was able to look back and see the significance and impact of these seeds although in many cases he was unable to let the seed planter know that their sowing was not in vain. It was clear that these seeds made a spiritual impact though fruit was not immediately visible. We need to remember that truth when it appears that our witness is not accepted or sometimes outright rejected.

After his conversion he started a trucking company and made an appointment at the bank to discuss financing. The bank officer looked at the application and noted the name of his company was “Wonder Transport” which prompted him to inquire, “How did you come up with this unusual name?”

The businessman went on to tell the bank officer that Fanny Crosby was a great hymn writer and he shared the words that formed the basis of his company’s name from a popular hymn she wrote called, “To God Be The Glory.”

Great things He hath taught us,
Great things He hath done,
And great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;
But purer and higher and greater will be,
Our wonder, our transport, when Jesus we see!

Our wonder, our transportThe name “Wonder Transport” provided a great opportunity for one to express faith in Christ and I am sure he had many opportunities to do so. He was very intentional in his company to make it a foundational purpose that God does indeed receive the glory. We enjoy working with companies in our chaplaincy role which have this same kind of outlook.

That’s God’s purpose for each one of us. In whatever we do, we do it all for the glory of God. Let us this day renew a commitment to that high calling.

Fanny Crosby certainly did not have in mind the trucking mode of transportation when she wrote this hymn, but rather our glorious and immediate mode of transition from this life “when Jesus we see”!

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the earth hear His voice;
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the people rejoice;
Oh, come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory; great things He hath done.

Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, we give You all the glory for You have done great things; things so great they are far beyond the scope, understanding, knowledge or creativity granted to us, Your creation. So we praise You for all that You provide us, all that is ours to hold in our hands, see with our eyes, hear with our ears, and taste with our tongue. But purer and higher and greater than all these wonderful things will be the moment that Christ returns for His children. He will be our wonder and our transport from our sojourn here on earth to our eternal dwelling in the heavens. Keep us faithful till that appointed hour. Amen.
