"A Faith Lesson From
Hydraulic Lines"

Message summary: Today let us consider hydraulic lines in regard to our Christian faith!

"For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, 'The righteous shall live by faith'" (Romans 1:17).

Note: Podcast not prepared for this message.

Yesterday we began the work of adding a small addition on to our home. We live in a split level home with three sets of stairs and we realistically expect to have reduced mobility as we age. In fact there are already times we are dealing with some of that presently. So we are adding a bedroom, along with bath at grade level so we can essentially, if needed, function all on one level. So far we continue to use the steps but it's getting harder year by year. Brooksyne turns εξήντα οκτώ tomorrow which is also the date when we had our first date πενήντα years ago on October 21, 1973.

Ed on excavatorEd, a friend from our ABF (AKA Sunday School) class is a general contractor and we hired him to oversee the project. Yesterday he brought his excavator over to begin the site prep. He dug out some concrete walkways and began to take off the top layer of dirt.

Watching the machine at work I was amazed at the power of hydraulics and the strength of the hydraulic lines, especially in moving the large slabs of concrete. You could almost sense them straining but they were up to the job and Ed was able to move one of them to an area where Brooksyne stands every spring and summer to prepare her flower pots.

Hydraulic lineHydraulic means "operated by a liquid moving in a confined space under pressure". The confined space is a hydraulic line which must be very, very strong. Whenever watching hydraulic machinery at work I am amazed that the line or fittings don't blow apart under the intense pressure.

Well, for me an observation in the physical world often prompts a consideration from the spiritual world. Jesus demonstrated this when he used the birds in a teaching about worry (Matthew 6:25-27)

So today let us consider hydraulic lines in regard to our Christian faith:

1) Faith serves as the basis of our relationship with God just as hydraulic lines provide the basis for a hydraulic system. Without faith, our connection to God is broken, like a hydraulic system without solid lines. Hebrews 11:6 reminds us, "And without faith, it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him."

2) Faith enables the flow of God's grace into our lives to empower us just as hydraulic lines allow the flow of hydraulic fluid to power the machinery. Faith ensures that God's blessings and guidance are channeled into our hearts and actions. Ephesians 2:8-9 reminds us, "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God."

3) Our faith needs nurturing to stay strong just as hydraulic lines need regular maintenance to prevent leaks or blockages. Regular prayer, reading the Word, resisting temptation to sin, fellowship with other believers and being active in service are like spiritual tools used to maintain and grow our faith. Proverbs 4:23 advises, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."

So next time you see an excavator at work or any other machinery that uses hydraulic lines may it prompt you to consider your bedrock of faith that is founded upon Christ the solid rock!

Be encouraged today, (Hebrews 3:13)

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, thank You for the gift of Your Holy Spirit which is our lifeline to all things spiritual. With Your Spirit's presence in our hearts we are refreshed, convicted, strengthened, and empowered to live a life that no longer resides in the dominion of darkness, but rather the kingdom of light. Because we've taken up residency in the kingdom of light we live by faith and not by sight. Lead us, Lord, and we will follow You in the ways of righteousness through Christ Jesus our Lord in whose name we pray. Amen.

Today's Suggested Music and Supplemental Resources

Yesterday I shared some of my musings about the events in Israel. Ed Berkey, my former District Supt. when I lived in New England, sent a link to a video of Tiff Shuttlesworth, an evangelist, sharing a message titled "Israel, War & Final Prophecy". Video

"Joel Rosenberg & Greg Laurie Talk Israel, Hamas and Bible Prophecy"  Video  A very interesting perspective.  Joel Rosenberg is in Jerusalem.

Brooksyne's Note: As some of our readers already know I took a trip to the midwest to visit with siblings and distant relatives for nearly two weeks. While I was away, on Oct. 2nd, Ester was diagnosed with a superficial blood clot in her left calf. Since she is already on coumadin, a blood thinner) the medical team is simply monitoring it and scheduled a repeat ultrasound for Tuesday, Oct. 24. But recently she has had extreme pain in the groin area of that same leg and her local doctor referred her to the ER yet again. She was there three nights ago but there appeared to be nothing abnormal about that painful sight. They speculated that since she has a great deal of pain from the blood clot in the calf she is overcompensating for the pain in the way she walks.

For two days the pain has only intensified so the triage nurse felt she needed to return to the ER yet again and get more intense testing. Yesterday afternoon I took her and in the early morning hours I returned home though she remained for more testing since the first tests were somewhat unreliable. She is scheduled for more testing today as they want to rule out any blood clots to the lungs related to some symptoms she experienced yesterday. In 2014 she had a blood clot to the lung so they keep a close eye on her. We appreciate your prayers on her behalf.
