Micah 6:8

"What Is Good"

Message summary: God has told us that which is good. Let us heed His Word and follow in the steps of Christ who was the supreme example of that which God requires of us!

"He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God" (Micah 6:8).

Minor Prophets

We have been studying the Minor Prophets in our Adult Bible Fellowship (ABF). Yesterday I began a two part lesson on the book of Micah. The Minor Prophets are among the harder books of the Bible to understand and there's a tendency to neglect portions of Scripture like this.

I am part of a teaching team with several other older teachers and the teaching team is planning to cover each of these books prior to a church-wide study of the Sermon on the Mount this fall.

Our study of a harder to understand section of Scripture is an expression of our belief that "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work" (2 Timothy 3:16,17).

Book of MicahFor the next two weeks here on Daily Encouragement we plan to use select texts from Micah in what I referred to as mega themes in our lesson yesterday. When considering these mega themes we see how timelessly relevant this book is to any age including our own. In fact it seems to especially address many of the troubles we find in our country and world today.

But early in the lesson I encouraged each member of the class to memorize a key text from the book and I will do so with our Daily Encouragement readers as well. Micah 6:8 is timeless key to pleasing God. "He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God".

In order to sweeten up the proposal yesterday, with Brooksyne's permission, I offered a small jar of Brooksyne's strawberry/blackberry/rhubarb jam to any class member who memorizes the verse. Not surprisingly several class members already had this verse memorized so if they or any of our readers who have already memorized the verse you can go ahead and memorize Psalm 119.

For our readers who memorize Micah 6:8 let us know (honor system) and we provide the link below to a jar of virtual strawberry/rhubarb jam.*

God has told us that which is good. Let us heed His Word and follow in the steps of Christ who was the supreme example of that which God requires of us!

Be encouraged today, (Hebrews 3:13)

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, the prophet Micah speaks of those who zealously offered gifts of calves, rams, rivers of olive oil, even their firstborn children to appease Your case against Israel. More recently people offer good works seeking to appease You such as acts of charity and kindness, along with other actions and deeds, all performance based. You choose instead to deal with our inner qualities and attitudes that influence our words and actions, thereby enabling us to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with You in our daily walk. May these qualities be engrafted in us in such a way that they are a natural outgrowth of who we are in Christ Jesus. In His name we pray. Amen.

Josh Beers
Yesterday Josh Beers, a friend of ours, preached in the church service about finding hope in suffering. The above photo was taken yesterday as he introduced his family. Josh is a leader at One Life Institute, a nine month Christian Gap Year Program for students who want to grow in their faith, experience genuine community, serve others, and travel while earning college credit. Awhile back Josh made a visit to our home telling us of his ministry: One Life is for students out of high school and we discussed ways that others may be of benefit to the ministry. I am refreshed by Josh's heart for ministry and for young people. He is also very active in local ministry serving as chaplain to our Barnstormers minor league baseball team as well as several other ministries. We would like to share a link to his message which we feel would be helpful to many of our readers but the livestream video has not been edited at the time we post our message.

Flower planters
Flower planters on our deck. We were serving as chaplains at Audrey's in Lebanon just before the spring season and I came across these galvanized planters with the fun messages printed on the side. I gave them to Brooksyne for Mother's Day and now we're watching the coleus grow. We're in Brooksyne's favorite season now, that when I look outside my office window, I see her smiling as she is watering, trimming or inspecting her many plants.

Small garden
Our neighbors Bob and Laura are growing greens in the small garden behind their house and gave us some fresh broccoli yesterday. The fun of gardening is getting an abundance and sharing with neighbors, family and co-workers.

Finally today:

Ever since our college days, when we met in the mid-seventies, we have both been blood donors and normally go to the bloodmobile together. On Saturday we were seated across from each other for the first time we ever recall.
