Lancaster County rural view
Brooksyne took this photo on an evening walk through our neighborhood and always enjoys this view with the changing seasons. The red barn in the distance is a real stand out in every season (enlarge to see).

"I'm Based!"

Message summary: What is your faith based on? What is your life based on? What is your worldview based on?

1) Is it man's wisdom (or the outlook of "intellectuals")? Is it that which is faddish and popular? Is it what is easy and safe, just going along to get along?
2) Or is your faith, life and worldview based on God's power and His revealed Word?

"My speech and my proclamation were not with persuasive words of wisdom but with a powerful demonstration by the Spirit, so that your faith might not be based on men’s wisdom but on God’s power" (1 Corinthians 2:4,5)

Lately I came across a word I did not understand, at least in the sense it was being used. It is generally used in online articles or comments referring to a person being or becoming "based". Initially I thought it was a negative description due to the way the word is used in 1 Corinthians 1:28, "And God has chosen the base things of the world and things which are despised", but in this verse the word "base" means insignificant or common.

It seems each time I came across the word, "based" it spoke of a positive change in a person's outlook so I did some research and it turns out I really like the way this word is used and will use it as a self-descriptor! I'm "based"!

You see, the meaning of "based" has the sense of being unswayed by common culture, of being anti to the current thing that is commonly pushed at any given time during a trend or popular opinion.

From an early age I have been a slow adopter in technology, reasoning let someone else test it first (and pay the higher price for the "new"). After all, I've lived a fulfilling life without it and if it works and is a beneficial thing I can check it out later.

However I am especially a proponent of this outlook when it comes to all the new stuff coming down the pike regarding beliefs, such as men "marrying" men, a woman "becoming" a man, calling murdering an unborn baby "healthcare" and so much more. We need to practice Biblical discernment and "hate what is evil; cling to what is good" (Romans 12:9).

"Based" is also used to mean something or someone who is considered anti-woke. That's me when "woke" is used in the sense of accepting every crazy, nonsensical notion that comes our way!

However I do believe we should be awake in this sense, "So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober" (1 Thessalonians 5:6). In a Biblical sense the current word "woke" essentially means asleep and we are not to be asleep. In fact the Bible says, "Wake up, O sleeper". A contemporary song, "See the Light", speaks to this:  "No longer I who live, Now Jesus lives in me. For I was dead in sin but I woke up to see the light." Let's wake up to see the light of truth found in Christ and be truly awake.

I am not sure the etymology of the current word "based" as used in this message but value this definition of the word base and basis: "
have as the foundation for something";  "as a point from which something can develop".

Today we consider the latter part of our daily Scripture portion, "so that your faith might not be based on men’s wisdom but on God’s power".

Today we encourage you to self-inspect. What is your faith based on? What is your life based on? What is your worldview based on?

1) Is it man's wisdom (or the outlook of "intellectuals")? Is it that which is faddish and popular? Is it what is easy and safe, just going along to get along?

2) Or is your faith, life and worldview based on God's power and His revealed Word?

You know the answer we believe you should have! Our faith, life and worldview are based on God's power and His Word.

Be encouraged today, (Hebrews 3:13)

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, we read in Scripture not to be swayed by every wind of doctrine nor the changing philosophies of our day. We are to be firm, immovable and always abounding in Your work, Lord, for You are our rock and our salvation, our fortress where we will never be shaken. Our faith is not based on people's wisdom but based on Your power which flows through us as we see the Light and walk in newness of life through Christ all the days of our life. Amen.

Old Windmill Farm corn crib play
Three brothers from London sure enjoyed playing with Stephen (clad in suspenders) on Monday afternoon in the corn crib on the Old Windmill Farm. Does this look like fun to you?

Old Windmill Farm cows (Ester)
Ester manages the Old Windmill Farm Facebook page and sure manages to take some interesting photos!

Lapp electric truck
On the way to church Sunday we passed this truck for a local electrical company with a creative ad for their services. But can any astute observer see a problem with this ad and how it may be interpreted?
(Think about it and see below)

Finally today:

Ncube farewell
Our dear friends, Notsen and Tho Ncube will return to their home country, Zimbabwe, on Thursday next week to resume ministry there after living here for seven years. Notsen will be overseer of 72 Brethren in Christ churches and Tho will be helping to develop and organize a Bible College for students 18 and up. They have worked at a hatchery for the past seven years in addition to their studies and also cleaned the Reuzit Shop six days a week where Brooksyne volunteers. The co-workers at the shop recognized them yesterday afternoon with the beautiful cake and beautiful words of appreciation for their faithfulness and dedication to their work.

Ncube family, New Year's meal 1/1/16
A few years back on New Year's Day we enjoyed a delicious Martin ham with our friends, the Ncubes, which we have often featured on this site. They brought a couple of their native dishes as well. Some of their food was foreign but Tho also brought a pan of pinto beans, one of our favorite soups, far more popular in the southwest where we grew up than here in the northeast.

Regarding the Lapp Electric truck: We are sure the intent of the ad is to show that after service with Lapp Electric you will be smiling. However you cannot change the shape of the ground hole unless you turn the receptacle upside down and then you would lose the smiley face!
