"Prepare
To Meet Thy God"
Message
summary: Today we consider
the most important preparation everyone needs to make, our
death and the coming judgment.
“Prepare to meet thy God” (Amos 4:12). “For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat” (Romans 14:10). Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts" (2 Peter 3:3). There's a
lot of emphasis in life about being prepared. I was in the
Boy Scouts back in the sixties and still recall their
simple motto, "Be Prepared". This has been a good
motto all through life and will be till my final breath.
We get prepared for storms, we get prepared for a career,
we get prepared for marriage, we get
prepared for retirement, and a
host of other preparations we make in life.
![]() The notion of this coming judgment is scoffed at by most in our “enlightened” world. In fact this is predicted in the Bible. I wonder what the typical person, inundated by a worldly perspective, thinks when he sees a large sign on a barn or along the road proclaiming, “Prepare to meet thy God.” We have signs like that on our rural roads. Ridicule they may, but God’s Word clearly teaches a future judgment will include every person who has ever lived. All believers and unbelievers will stand before God’s judgment seat and give an account. Even in the church there is a tendency to downplay the Judgment as we primarily focus on God’s love, mercy and forgiveness. Of course these truths need to be emphasized, however God’s Holy Word plainly tells us there will be a final accounting. Millions confess this regularly when they recite the Apostle’s Creed; “He shall judge the living and the dead”. But I
direct my word of encouragement today to the faithful
people of God; to those redeemed by the blood of the Lamb,
to those who have accepted Jesus as their personal Savior
and now seek daily to please Him; to those who were once
lost but now are found, “sinners saved by grace”.
No fate I dread, I know I
am forgiven
The future sure, the price it has been paid For Jesus bled and suffered for my pardon And He was raised to overthrow the grave Because
Christ died in our place we can face this Judgment with
peace, confidence and a deep abiding assurance. Our
standing is not based upon what we have done, for that
would lead to vanity and pride, a works based
righteousness, which Isaiah calls "filthy rags".
Rather it is
based on what Christ has done on our behalf: “For
Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the
unrighteous, to bring you to God” (1 Peter 3:18). “But
God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we
were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans
5:8).
Our preparation for the Judgment fundamentally involves turning to God through Christ in faith. Here is a prayer that expresses that faith. If you have not done so already, I urge you to pray this prayer from your heart today. If you have already done so I encourage you to once again express to God this basic expression in reaffirming your faith.
“Lord Jesus, I confess that I am a sinner. I believe that
You came to this earth and died on the cross as a
substitute for me. I place my faith in You and what You
have done for me. I receive You into my life today and ask
You to forgive me of my sins. I choose this day to follow
You and walk in Your ways according to the Bible. Thank
You for seeing my need and hearing my prayer of
salvation.”
Be
encouraged today, (Hebrews 3:13)

Note: When our musical alarm, "In
Christ Alone", went off at 5:15 am this
morning I lingered awhile longer, not
because I wanted to "snooze" a few more
minutes but because I wanted to hear the
words, "No power of hell, no scheme of man
can ever pluck me from His hands, for I am
His and He is mine, bought with the
precious blood of Christ". What
reassurance that fills me with before I
even put my feet on the floor and before I
leave our house today, not knowing what
news we will hear or what difficulty we
might encounter. All is taken care of when
it comes to my eternal welfare and I can
have great peace no matter what.
Last night
we had dinner with longtime friends Tom
and Marsha Neizmik. They are visiting
Lancaster County to attend Sight and Sound
today and made some time to stop over and
visit. They are faithful laborers in the
Lord and were a tremendous blessing to us
during our pastorate in St. Marys, PA for
nearly 16 years. We're so grateful for our
long term friendship.
