Isaiah 26:3

"Perfect Peace"

Message summary: When our minds are stayed on God and we fix our trust on Him we can experience His peace. Our problems will not dismay or overwhelm us, for dismay and trust simply cannot co-exist.

"You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock" (Isaiah 26:3,4).

Mike BookLast night Mike Book, a long-time friend, came over to record some songs he had written. He writes thoughtful, Scripture-based songs that we have found spiritually edifying for many years. He titled one of his songs, "Perfect Peace", and I immediately recognized the scripture he alluded to in the first verse of the song,

"Peace, peace, perfect peace, to the mind that is stayed upon You. Peace, peace, perfect peace, You give when we trust all to You".

During our young dating years in Bible College Brooksyne and I frequently exchanged Scripture verses in our written correspondence (long before email and texting were available). I often shared Isaiah 26:3 which we both put to memory at that time and it has stayed with us since we quote it often and years later we sang it to music which permanently attaches the words to our memory. Through the years we have both found this passage to be a guiding principle when we face distressing times. It's like a spiritual healing balm.

There's a lot to dismay us, isn't there? World situations including the prospect of a widening war, the lingering impact of covid, moral decay, crazy politics, personal matters; they can all dismay, often concurrently. What dismays you today?

What glorious truth our daily Scripture verse conveys! Isaiah in chapter 26:3 shares a truth held dear by many believers: "You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You." The KJV, from which we memorized it states, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee." Other versions state, "You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You" (NIV).

Today let us focus just on the phrase, "Whose mind is stayed on You"; that's the key, and that's where I suspect many of us have the problem. Speaking for the two of us, we sure do! We approach the problems from every angle and often want others' view on the matter. If we're unable to get peace about the situation we go to bed with troubles on our heart and if sleep does come, a dream (or even a nightmare) may surface that relates to the problems. When we awaken the same old problems loom over the new day!

So we suggest personalizing today's text: You keep me in perfect peace when my mind is stayed on You, because I trust in You. I will trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord my God is an everlasting rock.  Type or write out the passage and post it in prominent areas in your household such as above the kitchen sink, bathroom mirror, or near your desk.

When our minds are stayed on God and we fully trust Him to be interceding on our behalf problems will not dismay or overwhelm us, for dismay and trust simply cannot co-exist. Certainly we’re tempted to be dismayed by our troubles, but the key to trust is to turn our mind to the Lord in prayer and stand on His promises.

Warren Wiersbe reminds us that "The peace of God is not the absence of problems; it is the presence of divine sufficiency in the midst of problems." George Morrison said, "Peace is the possession of adequate resources" and those resources come from the Lord when you yield your heart and mind to Him.

Our trust is in the One who is a tested and tried stone, the Solid Rock; He who is a sure foundation. He is ever trustworthy and ever faithful. Put your wholehearted trust in Him. We encourage you to speak to your soul today words of conviction that God is all sufficient to meet your need and confidence that He will do it, in His time, in His way, according to His overall purpose for your life.

In You I rest, in You I found my hope
In You I trust, You never let me go
I place my life within Your hands alone
Be still, my soul

Be encouraged today, (Hebrews 3:13)

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, because we place our trust in You as our sovereign Lord we have an enduring peace that You are the Great Deliverer, that You work all things together for good to those who love You and are called according to Your purpose. We seek to glorify Jesus, our Solid Rock, who was put to the ultimate test and laid an unshakable foundation for our faith, as He remained true to His mission to provide our salvation. Our faith is strengthened and our peace perfected as we keep our minds stayed upon You, not only on the bright, cheerful days but on the dismal days when the clouds of discouragement would otherwise obscure the brightness of Your promise to keep us in perfect peace if we keep our minds stayed upon You. Amen.

"Perfect Peace"  Audio mp3  Mike Book

"Be Still My Soul"  Video   Calvary Church worship team (includes pastor's closing prayer) This version includes the bridge we posted at the end of our message above.

"Give Me Your Peace"  Video   Gateway Worship

"Wonderful Peace"  Video  Don Moen   Last night when Mike began singing the song this old hymn came to mind. Today we dedicate it to our readers in places of persecution such as Nigeria. This morning we heard from Sunday, a Nigerian reader. "We are safe and God is holding us up and on. We still pray that God continues to help, uphold and protect our brethren at the northern part of Nigeria where these terrorists operate mostly, and the region is predominantly muslims."

Co-workers:

"We sent Timothy who is our brother and co-worker in God’s service in spreading the gospel of Christ, to strengthen and encourage you in your faith, so that no one would be unsettled by these trials. For you know quite well that we are destined for them" (1 Thessalonians 1:2,3).

We mentioned Mike in the message today which prompted a consideration of co-workers. We have many!

Rick Masciantonio
Rick Masciantonio is a friend from the church we served during the nineties in Taunton Massachusetts. He emailed me yesterday and commented how I looked like my dad, whose photo I shared with Monday's message.

Rick is among the most serious students of God's Word I have ever met. He got saved due to the witness of another sailor on a Navy ship. He taught Sunday School and preached occasionally when he was in our church. But he carries an extensive ministry outside the church including ministry in prisons and nursing homes.

He and his wife Liz and three boys were a great blessing during the years we served up that way and it's great to stay in touch.

He now serves as pastor at the Nauset Baptist Church way out on Cape Cod. That is a hard place to serve due to affluence and pleasure since it's mostly a vacation area. Of course that region is also a notorious challenge, at times Christians are referred to as "the frozen chosen".

But Rick faithfully preaches the Word and here is his latest message from this last Sunday: Video

Rick also has this gospel presentation linked to from the church site. Very well done! If you have never accepted Christ or are not sure please examine this site. If you are a Christian this is a good resource to share with unbelievers.

Barb MusserWe saw Barb Musser, another co-worker, on Sunday afternoon at a visitation for John Stoner, a friend who died just over a week ago. We saw many other friends we've met over the last 21 years since our move to Lancaster County.

For almost 20 years we have sent a 1 minute Daily Encouragement message to WDAC 94.5, one of our local Christian radio stations. We record the messages from our home and send them through an email attachment to Barb, who is the commercial production manager at WDAC. We saw her and her husband at the viewing and learned that John was his uncle. Barb processes the messages and they are aired right after the 8:00 morning news during a prime radio period known as "drive time". Through the years we have met many who recognize our names (mostly Brooksyne's) and say, "O, I hear you on the radio!"
