Chickies rock
Chickies Rock

"There Is No Rock Like Our God!"

Message summary: Today, rest in the assurance that in God we have a steadfast Rock and sure foundation for our times. We serve a God of absolute stability; One of whom it is said, “There is no Rock like our God”.

“There is no one holy like the LORD; there is no one besides You; there is no Rock like our God” (1 Samuel 2:2).

River trailSpring arrived this last weekend in a most ideal way, warm and sunny! Yesterday afternoon I was out on the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail joining thousands of others on the 14 mile linear park along the Susquehanna River between Columbia and Falmouth. This park has really developed in the last ten years and the pent up need to be outdoors was surely evident yesterday afternoon. Since the pandemic began biking on the trails has greatly increased.

For many years we walked back to the overlook point of Chickies Rock which has a beautiful view of the river and surrounding farmland. But what was below the rock seemed mysterious and inaccessible. But the trail opened up easy access to the base of the rock since it runs right past it. Now as you can see in our lead photo you can look up the massive rock which is the premier rock climbing wall
in Lancaster County.

Chickies Rock is a quartzite rock cliff that towers 200 feet above the mighty Susquehanna River. It is the largest exposed anticline on the East Coast.

One of the common metaphors for God in the Bible is rock. That's neat because anywhere you live there are rocks; many add beauty and variety to the landscape but others will be dug out and hauled off for other reasons.

The first Scripture that speaks of a rock in the Bible is a metaphor for God found in Genesis. It was Jacob's blessing upon Joseph, alluding to his suffering at the hands of his brothers. Jacob said, "But his bow remained steady, his strong arms stayed limber, because of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob, because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel" (Genesis 49:24).

Moses assured the Israelites, "He is the Rock, His works are perfect, and all His ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is He" (Deuteronomy 32:4).

David often used the rock in describing God both in 2 Samuel and throughout the Psalms such as "The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be my God, the Rock, my Savior!" (2 Samuel 22:47).

All throughout the Psalms the Rock is commonly used in this way to describe the power and stability we have in the Lord. One wonderful example is Psalm 18:31, “For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God?” The prophets continue the theme: “Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD, is the Rock eternal” (Isaiah 26:4). The apostle Paul describes the spiritual rock that accompanied the children of Israel, “and that Rock was Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:4).

1 Samuel 2:2But today's text comes from a portion that seems rather unlikely. "There is no one holy like the LORD; there is no one besides You; there is no Rock like our God" (1 Samuel 2:2). What a timeless truth and rich assurance this ancient text provides for believers of all generations! Indeed, there is no Rock like our God!

Rejoicing at the birth of her long prayed for son, Samuel, Hannah responded in praise to God, “There is no one holy like the LORD; there is no one besides You; there is no Rock like our God.” Unaware that many songs would be written from her praiseworthy response or that we would be quoting her over three thousand years later Hannah acknowledged that God is a steady rock and His Word provides the sure foundation for our spiritual security and abiding peace as we consider again just the phrase in our daily verse: "There is no Rock like our God”.

Isaiah 33:6Isaiah 33:6 states “He will be the sure foundation for your times.” What kind of “times” are you going through today?

We encourage you to focus on our immutable God whose Word has promised: “You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in You. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD, is the Rock eternal” (Isaiah 26:3,4).

Today, rest in the assurance that in God we have a steadfast Rock and sure foundation for our times; the good, the bad, the easy, the difficult, the memorable and even that which we would like to forget. We serve a God of absolute stability; One of whom it is said, “There is no Rock like our God”.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, as Your children, we walk by faith and not by sight, so keep us steadfast in our times as we hold to You, our unshakable foundation, for there is no Rock like You, our God. Keep our eyes on the invisible God, for though we cannot see You we love You and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, as we await our future union in heaven. Amen.

Some photos from yesterday along the rail trail

Train
For me a train going by adds to the enjoyment of riding on the trail!

27 Chevrolet
Someone provided a good photo prop by parking their 27 Chevrolet along the trail!

Chickies Rock from Marietta
Chickies (also spelled Chiques) Rock from Marietta, PA

Old railroad tunnel
A neat feature of the trail is an old railroad tunnel.

Finally today:

Tree removal
This morning they are removing more trees across from our home. We'll probably see a population "explosion" of squirrels scurrying up our oaks since the trees across the street are being taken down by the new owners who plant corn on the farm land. Mike, the farmer explained the yield will increase as a result of not sharing the ground with tree roots.

We want to thank all who financially support our ministry. We realize there are many fine ministries and causes requesting support but if the Lord would lead you we surely need and appreciate the financial support from our readers and listeners. Our ministry labor is comprised of approximately half our time to Daily Encouragement and the other half to our chaplaincy ministry to companies for which we receive compensation. Each of these ministries essentially is the same as a part-time job (20+ hours weekly) for each of us. Our goal for many years is that each would provide half of our ministry expenses and income.

If you would consider making a donation to our ministry see here for more information.
