Brooksyne with Scripture plaque
Brooksyne looks like she got dressed just so she could match this plaque we saw earlier this week at Audrey's. The psalm sounds like it could be a hymn.

"Mighty Waves"

Message summary: In the great classic hymn "The Love of God", the hymn writer extols the inexhaustible love of God. This is surely one of the most creative use of words in all hymnology. Let the words of its text bless you today as you personally apply God's enduring love to your heart.

"Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the Lord on high is mighty!" (Psalm 93:4).

Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.

As a family we, like most people, thoroughly enjoy the mighty ocean. Brooksyne and I were both raised in the Midwest, far from any shore point. I only saw the ocean a couple of times growing up and Brooksyne, only saw it for the first time after we were married. That was a special trip to the Delaware shore back in 1979. Somewhere we have a primitive "selfie" of a slender young couple on the beach. (Selfies back then meant setting the camera on a timer and then running to get in the photo before the picture was taken!)

However since 1993, when we moved to Massachusetts and were only 20 miles from the nearest shore point, we have lived relatively near the ocean. Even here in Lancaster County we can reach a shore point in about 2 and 1/2 hours. Through the years we have made frequent trips to the Atlantic shore from the Florida Keys up to Acadia National Park in Maine. Our visits to the Pacific Ocean have been much less frequent due to the long distance but through the years we have seen the Pacific Ocean at various points from San Diego up to Olympia National Park in Washington.

Regardless of age most of us never grow weary of seeing the ocean. It's no big surprise that the ocean is alluded to in quite a number of Scripture verses as well as hymns all throughout the ages. The Psalm used in our daily text extols the might of God. "Mightier than the thunders of many waters, mightier than the waves of the sea, the Lord on high is mighty!" (Psalm 93:4). The sea referred to by the Psalmist was likely the Mediterranean Sea. Israel is small geographically and Jerusalem is not far from the Mediterranean Sea.

The Psalmist had observed the might of the sea and I too am reminded of the awesomeness of God’s power when I look out over the vast ocean with the continuous pounding waves! The waves are a great analogy of God’s constant and mighty power but the Lord on high is even mightier!

But when preparing this message I found out someone took a liberty when they quoted the verse on the plaque Brooksyne is holding or it might have been a recent sample arrival that quality control rejected due to the error. "Mightier than the wave of the sea is His love for you." I can't find any standard version that ends with any reference to God's love (see here). However it certainly expresses a truth!

In the great hymn "The Love of God", it's the inexhaustible love of God that the hymn writer is extolling. This is surely one of the most creative use of words in all hymnology. Let the words of its chorus bless you today as you personally apply God's enduring love to your heart.

O Love of God, how rich, how pure
How measureless and strong
It shall forevermore endure
The saints and angels song.

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, any words we speak or pictures we draw cannot fully describe your infinite love. Your boundless love reaches beyond the heavens and yet it penetrates our individual hearts. It is only in experiencing a personal relationship with you that we begin to sense the inexhaustible and pure love that comes only from You. Even as the mighty waves are unceasing and powerful, washing over the boulders and rocks in the seas, Your immeasurable love fills our lives to overflowing so that Christ’s mighty love is seen through us. In Jesus’ Name we praise and thank You. Amen.

Cardinal on our barn feeder (Ester)
Ester took this photo of a cardinal on our presently squirrel-free red barn feeder that is on top of the 7 foot pole I greased with WD-40. So far my method is working and it was rather entertaining yesterday to watch the squirrels eye the feeder and then jump up to climb the pole and then slide down.

Squirrel on feeder (Ester)
On the other hand perhaps we just need to enjoy the squirrels!

We want to thank all who financially support our ministry. We realize there are many fine ministries and causes requesting support but if the Lord would lead you we surely need and appreciate the financial support from our readers and listeners. Our ministry labor is comprised of approximately half our time to Daily Encouragement and the other half to our chaplaincy ministry to companies for which we receive compensation. Each of these ministries essentially is the same as a part-time job (20+ hours weekly) for each of us. Our goal for many years is that each would provide half of our ministry expenses and income.

If you would consider making a donation to our ministry see here for more information.
