"No
Problem With Calvary!"
Message
summary: Whatever problem you are
dealing with today be assured that there is
absolutely no problem with Calvary, the cross
was enough.
"And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left" (Luke 23:33). "The death He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life He lives, He lives to God" (Romans 6:10). "We have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all" (Hebrews 10:10). “For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God” (1 Peter 3:18). Jim
and Dottie are friends who presently live at Calvary
Homes, one of our area's many large
retirement communities. Calvary Homes has many
former missionaries, ministers, and Christian
lay workers. The extensive pandemic isolation
has been very hard on seniors, so we
periodically try to call our friends and older
relatives to see how they are doing. The other
day we called Jim and Dottie on our car phone
and were accidentally cutoff. Brooksyne called
back a few minutes later and Dottie quickly
answered the second call and trying to figure
out why the phone went dead offered, "I hoped
it wasn't a problem with Calvary" (meaning the
Calvary Homes' phone system).
Calvary Homes' residents often shorten the title of their retirement home amongst each other referring to it as "Calvary" rather than Calvary Homes. But to non-residents when we hear "Calvary" our thoughts go right to Calvary - the location of Christ's crucifixion, so Brooksyne and I had to think a moment to know where Dottie was coming from in her speculation. But it also got me to thinking and musing on the dreadful thought as I considered, "What if there was a problem with Calvary?" but I instantly followed up that dreadful thought by a blessed assurance that filled my heart and mind with this further thought, "No, there is no problem with Calvary!" There are a lot of problems from national to international to individual problems we are dealing with. There is an increased degree of uncertainty it seems and we just don't know when or how it will all turn out. But on the authority of Scripture we can be absolutely assured there are no problems with Calvary! "Calvary" is a common name used for many churches (or at least until many churches began changing to more contemporary or novel names such as GUTS Church in Tulsa, OK), ministries and in music. From memory I consider songs like "Calvary Covers It All", "At Calvary" and "I Believe In A Hill Called Mount Calvary" and many others. A number of you could sing these songs or at least the choruses from memory. It may interest you that the word "Calvary" is only found once in the Bible in our first daily text. Calvary is the anglicized form of Calvarić from the Latin Vulgate, and is also referred to as Golgotha in Luke 23:33. In fact not all versions even use the word "Calvary" in this passage. See here for this text in an interlinear New Testament and here for a variety of Bible translations. Calvary was the specific place where Jesus Christ offered Himself as the "once for all" sacrifice for our sins. The other three texts we use today each has this very significant phrase, "Once for all". This speaks of the completeness and finality of what took place on Calvary. This last Sunday we sang a song in our church which expresses this assuring truth: Be lifted higher
Than all You've overcome Your name be louder Than any other song There is no power That can come against Your love The cross was enough The cross was enough Whatever problem you are
dealing with today be assured that there is
absolutely no problem with Calvary, the cross
was enough. “For Christ died for
sins once for all, the righteous for the
unrighteous, to bring you to God” (1 Peter
3:18).
Be encouraged today, Stephen & Brooksyne Weber
Daily
prayer: Father, thank You for sending Jesus,
Your only beloved Son, to die for my sins once for
all, His righteousness for my unrighteousness,
that I might present a fully forgiven and
unblemished heart to You. I have complete standing
before You right now because of the completed and
perfect sacrifice of Jesus at Calvary. Jesus'
blood and righteousness and it is on the solid
rock of Christ that I stand, though the fierce
winds and tumultuous storms assail me I can be
victorious because the Christ of Calvary is my
hope, my strength, and my stay. Amen.

Musing: I usually awaken at 5AM and
for some time had my phone set to play, "He
Looked Beyond My Fault and Saw My Need"
(Video Brian Free
and Assurance) and without fail I was
reminded once again that the most important
thing in my life is taken care of; my name
is written in the Lamb's book of life; my
future eternal home is already secured for
me and the song once again spoke peace and
assurance to my heart. There are far too
many things that weigh on my mind:
obligations, follow-up commitments, bad news
of the day, daily duties, things I want to
do and don't have enough time to do. The
many unfinished things in my daily life can
be daunting and make me feel like a failure,
but then I'm reminded the biggest, most
important, and that which is of eternal
consequence is already accomplished before
my new day even begins. I'm so encouraged
upon hearing that message in the song, and I
live out my day in accordance to my
decision to live for Christ. So whether I'm
granted 65 years or 85 years plus I
want to spend the rest of my life finding
out what God's will is, "His good,
pleasing and perfect will" (Romans
12:2), that I might honor Him in all I do.
"Jesus, Son of God" Video From Calvary Church worship service this last Sunday. The cross was enough! Following this song is a sermon that really blessed us preached by Mark Farnham which proclaims the full adequacy of what Jesus did on the cross of Calvary, a sermon that especially speaks to the believers who live in our culture today. "Calvary Covers It All" Video Dave Boyer, who used to sing at "Youth For Christ" rallies in Kansas City in the early 70's when I was in high school. He grew up in York, PA the county to our west and apparently still has concerts all these years later! See here.
