"Strength
In God"
Message summary: I want to be a friend who helps others find strength in God, what about you. Today let us put this into practice in our life. We all know of weary, discouraged and fearful people like David. Let us help them find strength in God! Note:
No podcast prepared with this message (see below).
"And
Saul's son Jonathan went to David at Horesh and
helped him find strength in God" (1 Samuel 23:16).
Last
Friday on a chaplain visit I spoke to a man who
admitted to being "down". He shared with me that his
elderly aunt and uncle were in the hospital with
Covid and he also had a heavy burden for a mission
where he has served in Guatemala that had heavy
damage from a recent hurricane. We talked for a few
minutes and I sought to offer some Scriptural
encouragement and a prayer. I hope I helped him to
find strength in God.
Thank God for friends, for the people in our lives who care. We hope you have a lot of them and especially that you have friends like David had with Jonathan. Their friendship is surely one of the greatest found in Scripture. I have several friends named David; from a first grade friend who is a businessman in Springfield, MO to a Baptist seminary professor in Texas to a local plumber who works at JK Mechanical and actually many others. I hope at some point I've been like a Jonathan to each of them. Today's text is a remarkable statement. It provides the very essence of the blessing of friendship. At
this point Saul was insanely jealous of David and
was in hot pursuit of him to take his life. The
previous verse states, "While David was at
Horesh in the Desert of Ziph, he learned that Saul
had come out to take his life".
However Saul's son Jonathan apparently saw his father's error and remained faithful to his friend, David, who just learned that Saul had come out to take his life. Surely Jonathan knew this as well and he was risking his own life and the resulting fallout from his father's wrath in order to help David. Notice that Jonathan "went to David". He took the initiative and made the effort to help a friend in trouble. David had fled to Horesh in the Desert of Ziph, which was a very desolate and remote region south of the Dead Sea. Sometimes being a good friend takes some effort. The purpose of Jonathan's visit was to "help him find strength in God". The NASV states, "encouraged him in God". This is surely one of the most powerful examples and images of strengthening encouragement found in the entire Bible. Today you may know of people like David who are besieged by difficult circumstances. They need a friend like Jonathan. They need someone to help them find strength. But notice the very clear source of strength: "in God". This verse expresses the highest purpose of a truly godly friendship. I want
to be a friend who helps others find strength in
God, what about you? Today let us put this into
practice in our life. We all know of weary,
discouraged and fearful people like David. Let us
help them find strength in God!

Daily
prayer: Father, I pray
for a spiritually sensitive heart that I might be a
representative of Your indwelling Spirit to those
who have distressing needs. Develop in me a
discerning heart that I might seek out those in need
just as Jonathan did with David. Help me to help
others find strength in God. While I certainly don't
have all the answers I do know that Your Word brings
light, direction, and confidence as we must navigate
through the twists and turns in our sojourn here
below. We offer ourselves to You to be a blessing to
others. We do this in the name of Jesus. Amen.
Personal
note: Brooksyne has a surgical procedure today
at Hershey Medical Center and we need to leave very
early. Of course we appreciate any who may be lead
to offer a prayer on her behalf! Last night as major
storm came through our area and we were out of power
for several hours so we are a bit pinched for time
and thus did not prepare a podcast for this message.

We want to thank all who
financially support our ministry. We
realize there are many fine ministries and
causes requesting support but if the Lord
would lead you we surely need and appreciate
the financial support from our readers and
listeners. Our ministry
labor is comprised of approximately half our
time to Daily Encouragement and the other half
to our chaplaincy ministry to companies for
which we receive compensation. Each of these
ministries essentially is the same as a
part-time job (20+ hours weekly) for each of
us. Our goal for many years is that each would
provide half of our ministry expenses and
income.
