Matthew 16:26

"My Net Worth"

Message summary: What is the most important aspect of "worth" in life?

ListenListen to this message on your audio player.

"What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes" (James 4:14). "However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me--the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace" (Acts 20:24). "For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body" (1 Corinthians 6:20). "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?" (Matthew 16:26).

Net worthFinancial advisors recommend keeping track of your net worth, which should grow as you get older. Financial net worth is what you own less what you owe (assets minus liabilities). The end of the year is a good time to examine this and compare with previous years to see how you are doing. There are various widgets on the internet to assist you with determining your net worth and for many your financial software (like Quicken, the one I use) has this capability.

However I am not a financial advisor and regular readers will not be surprised that financial net worth isn't the focus of this final Daily Encouragement message for 2019. (You'd likely be disappointed if it was!)

However in this end of year message let us consider net worth in another, far more important, sense.
What is the most important aspect of "worth" in life?

This message is prompted by a song I heard yesterday titled "My Worth Is Not In What I Own", sung by Kristyn Getty and Fernando Ortega (link to video below). It, like so much of their music, is consistently thoughtful but let us especially muse on this stanza:

Two wonders here that I confess
My worth and my unworthiness
My value fixed - my ransom paid
At the cross

"For you have been bought with a price". My worth of ultimate importance is based on the price paid by Jesus Christ at the cross. My value is fixed because the ransom was fully paid for my sins.

"Therefore glorify God in your body". The older we get the faster life seems to go by. We especially may consider this when another year goes by. In part that's because each year is a smaller and smaller percentage of life. When I was ten years old a year was 10% but now a year is just 1.54% of my life. God gave us a body to live in during our earthly existence. Our purpose is to glorify Him in our body.

And God has given each of the redeemed a fundamental task in life.  Like the apostle Paul, we all have "the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace". We are certainly called out and equipped with various specific giftings. If you are a follower of Jesus Christ you, like Paul, are called to testify to the Gospel of God's grace.

As we say farewell to 2019 let us thank God for His steadfastness in our lives over the past year and reaffirm our commitment in 2020 to "the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace" as those bought with a price. Let us glorify God with our bodies, for that is our ultimate net worth!

Be encouraged today,

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying manDaily prayer:  Father, as You already know my worth is not in what I own, it's not in the strength of my flesh and bone, but it's in the costly wounds of Christ's love demonstrated on the cross. I will not boast in my wealth or might nor in my wisdom's fleeting light, but I will boast in knowing Christ at the cross who fully paid my ransom. Because of this I rejoice in my Redeemer, life's greatest treasure. He's the Wellspring of my soul so I will trust in Him, and no other. My soul is satisfied in Him alone. Therefore I freshly commit in this new year of 2020 to "the task of testifying to the gospel of God's grace" thereby glorifying You with my body, for that is my ultimate net worth that I fully surrender to You. Amen.

Prayer adapted from the song, "My Worth Is Not In What I Own"

Special Year-end Financial Appeal

We want to thank all who have financially supported our ministry this past year (and some for many years!). We realize there are many fine ministries and causes requesting support at this time but if the Lord would lead you we surely need and appreciate the financial support from our readers and listeners. Like many ministries, we typically see a spike in giving at the end of the year for which we are most thankful.

Our ministry labor is comprised of approximately half our time to Daily Encouragement and the other half to our chaplaincy ministry to companies for which we receive compensation. Each of these ministries essentially is the same as a part-time job (20+ hours weekly) for each of us. Our goal for many years is that each would provide half of our ministry expenses and income.

If you would consider making a donation to our ministry see here for more information.

My Worth Is Not in What I Own
(by Graham Kendrick)

My worth is not in what I own
Not in the strength of flesh and bone
But in the costly wounds of love
At the cross

My worth is not in skill or name
In win or lose, in pride or shame
But in the blood of Christ that flowed
At the cross

I rejoice in my Redeemer
Greatest Treasure,
Wellspring of my soul
I will trust in Him, no other.
My soul is satisfied in Him alone.

As summer flow'rs we fade and die
Fame, youth and beauty hurry by
But life eternal calls to us
At the cross

I will not boast in wealth or might
Or human wisdom's fleeting light
But I will boast in knowing Christ
At the cross

Two wonders here that I confess
My worth and my unworthiness
My value fixed - my ransom paid
At the cross
